DU vs UM 2/12-2/13 at Magness

Re: DU vs UM 2/12-2/13 at Magness

The first two periods were fun to watch if you're a Gopher. DU was not mentally in the game and passed the puck like #%%#%! UM out shot us badly and were throwing bodies everywhere. DU was looking past UM to tech! :D DU's PP looked like Mercyhurst's.

George reamed them in the second intermission and woke up his first line especially Ruggs. DU has a chance to make history tomorrow night with a season sweep of the Gophs and the UNDies. I expect they'll be mentally ready.

The difference tonight again and for the I don't know how many times all year was Marc the pointer getter Chevy.

I don't get why all the Denver fans are saying DU played like crap the first two periods. They played well; it's just the Gophers FINALLY looked like they were playing to their potential. It really had the feel of a playoff game. Those first two periods were rather intense.

I mentioned it in the scoring thread after the first two periods that "first to one wins?!" I hope tonight's game is just as good (except maybe a different outcome). ;)

I didn't think they played like crap. What I did see was two teams not giving an inch in front of the net. The passing lanes were clogged and no one could get into the slot for a Grade A chance. Most of the shots in the first period were perimeter shots by both teams that the goalies saw all the way. The one exception was Schroeder's try in the first that was tipped off of the far post. Not sure if Chevy just got a piece of it or if tipped offsomeone in front of him.

Ruegs coast-to-coast "Rubberband Man II" highlight reel goal was the backbreaker. The Gophs never recovered as DU took them to the woodshed by outskating them the rest of the game. The Minny goal was a stuff shut that went off of the goal stancion that Chevy had no chance on. This season "dirty" goals are the only ones that players have been able to get past him. I don't think he has given up a "soft" goal all year and as you saw last night rebounds are a rarity.

Do the Gophers have a goalie coach? You can see Kangas is very talented but he doesn't seem to play with the calmness nor efficiency of movement that you see in Chevy. I think with a solid goalie coach, Kangas could improve tremendously.

On the post-shot on Chevy, it looked like it went off him. And totally agree on "not giving an inch." I think MN didn't want to give up that first goal because after that, they would lose all confidence and falter (which is what happened in the 3rd), and DU didn't want to give up that first goal because then it might have opened the floodgates for MN; that Chevy shutout pressure might have contributed to that happening (unfortunately, it didn't happen like that).

And spot on about Chevy and dirty goals. I don't recall seeing a soft goal on him in the 4-5 games I've seen him in this year.

Gophers did have a goalie coach, volunteer, in Rob Stauber, but he left a while ago. I don't think they have one now. From what I've seen of Kangas this year, is for every 4-5 unreal saves, he gives up a big-time softie (see: 3rd DU goal last night). That's the difference between him when he first started games and now, IMO.

I agree with this assessment. I've seen a number of DU games this year. Yesterday wasn't atypical of their play. The first 40 minutes saw a lot of missed opportunities by both sides. That was in large part due to very aggressive and well played defense by both teams. In the end DU had a couple goal-scorers step up and make a play, and the Gophers didn't.

We don't want you to win, either, you bastich. We hate everyone. :)

So GE, What you're saying is you'll be pulling for Denver to win this evening as that will all but clinch "away" ice for your Gophers in the first round of the playoffs?

Okay, I can go along with that. And thanks for the kind thought. :p

Have a good rest of the weekend. :)

You know you really hate your rival when you don't want your team to win because it might benefit the rival. :D

At this point who cares? There is no chance of getting an at-large bid. The only way is to win the Final Five. Seeming the Gophers suck just as hard at home as they do on the road, who really gives a crap about home ice?

Re: DU vs UM 2/12-2/13 at Magness

MN has a volunteer goalie coach - Justin Johnson. They did not have one last year - I think Stauber went to handle the goalie coach duties with the U's women's team.

The first DU goal was a result of a couple things:
1) MN player failed miserably in the neutral zone to put a hit on the guy, and
2) Kangas clearly slipped / lost balance and wound up on the outside of the net as the puck was pulled across in front of the crease, leaving most of the net open.

As has often been the case this season, if MN gives up the first one, their low wattage offense can't overcome the meager deficit, regardless of who the opposing goalie is.

I expect tonight's outcome to be the same as last night. This team is going nowhere (save for on the road in the first round), which is what I've known since October.

--Associated Press

A historic moment in USCHO history happened today. The unthinkable has become fact: Brenthoven has temporarily suspended his tArrogance card. Without any influence by members of his own fanbase, he showed up, sullen and downtrodden, and emptied his glass. "I'm past plaid and ludicrous," Brenthoven quoted, ".....I've gone Scooby on the bit." As he trudged away, head hung low, he muttered an obscenity that was barely audible, but summarized the emotions of the entire Gopher fanbase: "F*."

Congrats, DU. You officially killed any dreams and hallucinations the Gophers had about their season. Good luck to your team the rest of the way, it's looking like you guys are gonna make a big-time run in the post-season.

I can't believe I am going to say this but I don't care what happens the rest of the season. The faster the season is over the closer warm weather comes to Minnesota. Warm weather makes my store more money!;)

I stopped really caring quite a while ago. The loss to NMU to be exact. After SCSU I stopped paying any real attention. Last night was the first time in many years that I turned the game off and left. This is the first year in quite a while that I am looking forward to summer and baseball.
