Division III score updates - 2013-2014

Re: Division III score updates - 2013-2014

How does that work and is that what the others like St. A's, Holy Cross, etc. do? Enter the ECAC Open or do they not participate in any post-season play either? I thought with the "joining the ECAC-East" officially next season it made them eligible, but apparently not.

FP, being a DII team, will never be able to compete for a NCAA title or move onto the ECAC East post-season. They will compete within the ECAC East Conference but they will only be eligible for the ECAC Open which includes other teams that are ineligible like St. A's (DII), St. Mikes (DII), Holy Cross (DI), and Sacred Heart (DI). No matter if they place 1st or last, they cannot compete for anything but a conference title and the Open. IMO, an unfortunate repercussion for teams like St. A's (who is ranked), and potentially FP because they will never get the chance at the NCAA level unless they switch to a DI program.

FP will be a member of the conference and play the conference schedule (like St. Mikes, Holy Cross, and St. A's), but because they are a D2 school they are not eligible to participate in the conference tournament (because the rest of the teams that are all D3 are playing for a bid to the NCAA D3 tournament). So the schools not eligible for the D3 tournament have traditionally played the ECAC Open - St A's, St. Mikes, and Holy Cross (it all seems pretty religious, doesn't it?). They have invited Sacred Heart in the past (completing the religious experience :)). I assume that next year they will either boot Sacred Heart and add Franklin Pierce or go to a 5 team tournament format.

More broadly, I understand that St. A's is likely to go D3 in all sports (their basketball team is the primary reason they haven't already done it from what I hear) - there has been talk about them going D1 but that is just not going to happen. I also hear that St. Mikes is likely to follow to D3 as well. So that would leave FP, Sacred Heart, and Holy Cross as the D2/D1 outliers in women's hockey. Don't know what they do at that point.

Re: Division III score updates - 2013-2014

So what's up with Sacred Heart? In the past (3 years ago and longer) they have been able to field teams that were competitive against pretty much all D3 teams and could play with the very low end D1 teams. This season, they are just not good at all and can't even skate with average D3 teams. Do we think this is just an off year or that this is the start of the end for a program that has little to no support and can't seem to decide on what it wants to be? Coach O'Malley is a champ for hanging in there, but it feels relatively hopeless for him. Makes one wonder why they bothered to upgrade from D3 to D1. And Bobby Valentine isn't helping...

Re: Division III score updates - 2013-2014

This doesn't make FP all that different from anyone else. Seems like it's the same 10-12, maybe 15 teams that are competing to get into the NCAA's every year anyway. Resources across the board vary so much at different schools that you're always going to have the "haves" and "have nots". Some schools may like to say they have the ability to go to the NCAA's...but the reality is they have about as much chance as St A's, St Mike's, Holy Cross, or Franklin Pierce.

If Saint Anselm's were playing D3, they would DEFINITELY have a legitimate chance of making the NCAA's this season.

Re: Division III score updates - 2013-2014

In regard to Sacred Heart, it is strange because they had a fairly good record against D3 teams in 12-13 (15-6-2) and returned the majority of their players from that team. Granted they had 4 wins against FP, 2 against Stevenson, and 2 against UNE but that still left them over .500 against non-first year programs. From that team they returned their top 7 scorers. They lost an 11 pt forward, and a pretty good defenseman along with some role f's and a role d.

Seems like they wouldn't have fallen off the map so far with that kind of core returning

They aren't, so they don't...but that wasn't really my point. There are a lot of people that like to say "don't go to St A's" or "don't go to St Mike's" because you can't win a national championship...but the reality is that is true at probably 80% of the programs out there anyway.

Not saying you're wrong but, people like to have the hope that in any given year throughout college they have a chance. You're right, most programs won't get that chance over the course of 4 years (even more than that) but, for a lot of these kids, motivation comes from the idea that on any given day, it could be theirs. I also happen to know girls who are just happy to get the opportunity to play for another 4 years, regardless of a real shot at the title or not.

Thanks Alzhockey and HockeyEast for the clarification, makes sense. It seems almost blasphemous to add FP to the St. A's, St. Mikes, Holy Cross, Sacred Heart field. :-)

SNC 4
Adrian 0

SNC fully in control of their own destiny for 1st place as we speak. If they can find a way to keep it rolling Saturday night at Lake Forest it's shaping up for a final night game for the title between the Knights and St. Scholastica in DePere.
