Division 1 Commitments 2014-15

Re: Division 1 Commitments 2014-15

WI girls HS hockey has no depth whatsoever, so all that scoring really isn't that impressive when you look at the big picture.
Imagine the numbers for Decker or Kessel with 5-6 seasons of varsity WIAA hockey.

Re: Division 1 Commitments 2014-15

I completely agree with brookyone! There are a few highly skilled female hockey players from the state of Wisconsin that have gone the route of AAA hockey or have gone to SSM like Decker and Kessel did. A couple examples of recent players would be Claudia Kepler and Baylee Wellhausen. Ms. Kepler is currently at Ohio State and Ms. Wellhausen is a senior at Shattuck and headed to the University of Wisconsin next fall. They would have eaten up the poor quality of play in Wisconsin High School Hockey. But they would have never develpoed into the players they are either!

People are not wrong to suggest there are others out there who could have scored in huge numbers had they played HS hockey, however lets be careful not to diminish the achievements of this player. The fact remains she is a very talented hockey player, and it's great that she be recognized as such, even if the author of this article may have been ill informed when he wrote the article. This author also wrote that her teammate at Onalaska would not receive athletic scholarship from Union due to it's status as an Ivy League school. http://lacrossetribune.com/sports/high-school/onalaskahilltoppers/reeves-verbally-commits-to-d-i-union-n-y/article_ccdcd346-5ee9-11e3-a3ac-001a4bcf887a.html

If anything let's be careful to phrase our pot shots at a less than stellar journalist rather than a hockey player who has done nothing but play hard and score a lot of goals.

... even if the author of this article may have been ill informed when he wrote the article.
I don't know that I'd even blame the author for most of it. If some organization touts itself as keeping records on a national level, then it should do a better job of making sure that it has comprehensive information.

Re: Division 1 Commitments 2014-15

The only point I was trying to make was that girls high school hockey in Wisconsin is just so watered down and weak that any big scoring records put up by anybody really doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot. I have watched the best girl "high school" players in Wisconsin and most of them are not recruited to play at the D-1 level. When you play against unskilled players you develop very bad habits. The better players can get away with not having to work as hard in games AND practice. They aren't pushed to get better on a daily basis. In the state of Illinois girls are allowed to play both on their high school teams and on their AAA teams during the season. I don't know why this isn't done in Wisconsin as well. The best Wisconsin high school players play on Team Wisconsin from September thru October, but then go back to their high school teams at the start of November -- once again regressing as players!

TK plays for team Wisconsin and led them in scoring 3 years in a row I believe. She can score, is a force and opposing teams know who she is. She can play D1 at UConn or be a star at River Falls. Good kid by all accounts and has friends on my daughter's team (central district kids get to know one another at camps/games etc. and is relatively small group).

I agree about HS hockey scoring from a D1 standpoint. It isn't a big deal. Even in MN, it doesn't mean a ton from a D1 coach's standpoint, and it means even less in Wisconsin and far less in Illinois. Even though kids are allowed to play both in Illinois, many D1 level kids don't play on HS (club) teams.

On the other hand, girls' D1 hockey commitments in Wisconsin/Illinois (a huge deal to us) are meaningless for the most part. (Your going to Clarkson? North Dakota? Mercyhurst?) My guess is HS kids/townspeople don't really know anything about Team Wisconsin or UConn (the best thing in the article to you and me). They do however probably think scoring a ton of goals for Onalaska is pretty darn cool though. So, from that standpoint, it was a great "local" article to give a good hockey player some local street cred in her hometown with her local friends. I'm sure she knows it is a bit ridiculous from a D1 standpoint. I think all these local articles need to be viewed in this light.

Must not be a big deal if you can do it for team Wisconsin then either! ;)

I did a bit of a double-take on Maine's new recruit Mikayla Rogers only because Minnesota's Nina Rodgers is also known as "Maliya" Rodgers:
http://u18womensworlds.usahockey.com/page/show/1048120-under-18-winter-festival-roster

even though in the Gophers' formal release she was identified as "Nina" Rodgers:
http://www.gophersports.com/sports/w-hockey/spec-rel/112513aaa.html

In any case, best of luck to both of them next year at their respective schools!

P.S. Nina/Maliya Rodgers is from Minnetonka, MN and currently plays for Hopkins High School; Mikayla Rogers is from St. Paul, MN and currently plays for the St. Paul Blades, a coop of several St. Paul high schools.

Good catch on the Rodgers to Rogers issue. You missed the Lynn Astrup committed to 2 teams. UND and UMD (North Dakota and Duluth) She is going to Duluth. I don't want to mess with the Huxster's board. I had been duly reprimanded earlier this year. LOL newbie!

Re: Division 1 Commitments 2014-15

Looking at the updated list, some musings:

- Not a lot of help for a talent challenged Dartmouth team unless they have an un-identified group of Canadiens in the regular admission pool
- Ditto for the Union team, which has no one listed (!!??)
- BC with another talented class
- Harvard with another fairly large class that will come into a roster situation that has too many to begin with next season.....will someone get cut in admissions again?
- Does Minnesota State really need 9 kids? Are they the St Norberts of Division 1?
- Northeastern with a talented and large class
- Providence - not a lot of help after suffering through a pretty disappointing season to date
- Still struggling to believe that Yale gets 7 kids in but time will tell....

Interesting about Union. They have 2 commitments already for 2015-16 but nothing for next year, despite having 5 seniors graduating. My bet is that they have a few Canadians yet to announce.
