DIII NCAA pairing speculation

Re: DIII NCAA pairing speculation

Just out of curiosity Go J...has a team ever, in the history of NCAA Div 3 Women's Hockey... earned an at-large bid and the first round bye into the Semi's of the Final Four after losing their respective Championship game?

I don't see what that has to do with my post, but this would be the first. At least now the precedent has been set! This would be the 2nd time that the presumed number 1 seed did not receive the first round bye.

if you look at all the guidelines the NCAA has in place for determining first round pairings, they followed them

Someone has been reading my blog... ;)

Re: DIII NCAA pairing speculation

is this the first time since the tourney expanded beyond 4 teams that only 1 team from the amazing, super awesome ECAC-W has been in it?

Which means clearly that it will be a walkover for that team -- godlike powers that they will possess for having survived the mosh pit -- I predict a +10 on the three games for RIT.

My backup evidence is the CN presence on the teams (RIT -- 55%, Norwich -- 35%, Midd - 8%, RF -- 5%) -- if you give every 10% more CN a goal, then RIT is up 5 on midd and 2 on Norwich -- and Adrian is 26%CN -- so that's another 2-2.5 goals. My goal exchange rate, weighted for the higher CN$ value.

I was thinking about it and this is at least the 20th time that a conference tourney championship game loser has not made the playoffs....so I don't see why Plattsburgh is so up in arms about it.

Would you feel the same way if Superior had beaten River Falls instead of Adrian and River Falls got the bye into the FF and hosted??

It had nothing to do with your post but I knew if you didn't know you would find out.
Personaly I thought that it was significant enough as a historical first in D3 Women's Hockey that it would have been mentioned in a blog that attempted to explain to the masses how one team got in and another didn't...by a whisker. That would have been keen reporting in my view.

I have no doubt that the people charged with interpreting the NCAA guidelines with respect to awarding *Norwich the at-large and bye did so to the best of their ability.
Having looked over the D1 Women's and D3 Men's threads with respect to similar decisions made...it looks like they may have had a rough week.

Thanks for the information.

Not sure the Platty faithful are "up in arms about it". I think disapointed is more the word.

I guess until we walk in their shoes we will never understand how gut wrenching it is for a team that graduates 8 Seniors to find out that your not invited to the prom.

I don't know who Superior is so I can't answer your question...

I am not a PSU fan, but love the game, and I can tell you that after 2 hardfought ties and a one goal slugfest -- those are two teams that deserved another shot at each other for the good of the game and fanbase. I am disappointed that I can't see the end of that movie...it was a rivalry that outshone all others this season and should have been allowed to finish itself properly not by administrative fiat

Bingo....

The girls lost 4 games all year (by a total of 5 goals). It's disappointing that isn't worthy of a bid. But, as I usually use in an argument, if Plattsburgh gets in, who do you take out (and the auto-bid teams don't count for this discussion)? River Falls? Certainly not. Norwich? Norwich went 3-3 against teams in the tourney....Plattsburgh went 3-3-2. There was no compelling argument for either one over the other so you can't argue with either one getting the last bid.

As for the bye, the NCAA had no choices with the field it had. Had they picked Plattsburgh over Norwich, they could have chosen between Plattsburgh and Middlebury for the bye. With Norwich, they were the only eligible team to get the bye....I have no argument with that.

RIT has had basically 5 games ending in 1 goal differentials or ties if you take away empty netters. 3 of which came from Platty, and the other 2 from the great ECAC West.

that was essentially my point to counter Gojackets's jibe about the "great Ecac-W" -- it is still great (and Plattsburgh got screwed this year as bad as RIT got screwed last year -- I still suspect that RIT is gonna roll as a result of that last year thing)

It happens every year in the MIAC and almost every year in the NCHA.

Re: DIII NCAA pairing speculation

They graduate that many seniors every year?

I reckon you missed my point...

I got your point, but what makes the fact that it's plattsburgh's seniors any different from every other team? They lost their playoff game just like everyone else did. THey should have known that they needed to win that game to be in, and they lost.

Well...there's no missing your point you keep repeating it all the time...

Anywho....I'm now more curious in your statement that teams in the MIAC & NCHA graduate those kind of numbers and almost graduate those kind of numbers every year. Can u elaborate on that?

I don't know how you can definititely say Plattsburgh got screwed.

There is no doubt they are a good team but there are only seven slots in the tournament and two at-large spots. River Falls lost one game the whole season so they had to be in and Norwich/Plattsburgh was a toss up. It was very close between the two in criteria with neither holding a significant advantage over the other across the board. They played twice this year and split.

If Plattsburgh got in, people would say Norwich got screwed, Unfortunately, they were only two at large spots and four very good teams didn't win their conference, meaning two were going to get left out.

Those are the breaks sometimes.

Re: DIII NCAA pairing speculation

don't think I have heard too much complaining about who got in. Giving the bye to a team that just made it in by such a small margin with two teams clearly having a better season possibly 6 teams. I thought they NCAA was supposed to protect the student athletes not shaft them every step of the way in the name of dollars. They should be ashamed and are no better then common street thugs. After seeing that RIT has invested all their money in the we are a d1 program cr** and had no money left to webcast a NATIONAL PLAYOFF game I am glad their bye was stolen from them.

I don't hear a lot of beefing about the bye. That's acceptable and allows the NCAA needed flexibility. If it works for you -- it's a great feeling and lucky. I just share the disappointment of either team that wouldn't have made it in as a result of upsets in OTHER conferences (that just feels unfair when a bad day by RF or NU ends YOUR season) -- on the other hand -- Adrian and Manhattanville grabbed that brass ring - but at the expense of folks they don't even know.

The no video thing is dead-on. They better get it fixed for next weekend. That is a disgrace (maybe they can cobble together a camera and stray cable for tomorrow yet). Otherwise send the tourney to the local starbucks to get coverage. Don't they teach technology there or sumthin?
