DIII NCAA pairing speculation

Re: DIII NCAA pairing speculation

PLATTSBURGH, NY --- Coach Houle announces the inaugural "Platty Plush" Tournament, Nov. 1-3, 2011 at Stafford Arena. Invitees are Chatham, Plymouth State, and Wesleyan set to play against the host Cardinals. Houle offered this statement, "in recognition of the growing parity in D3 Women's Hockey, we are trying to take advantage of the diverse talent and competitiveness that's out there to showcase good women's hockey. We've replaced the Cardinal-Panther Classic with this new-look tourney since it highlights the lesser-known fresh faces of our growing sport. Last season's results showed that strength-of-schedule is overrated and that these kind of games appeal to the fans and judges. The fans want fireworks and flash, and this tournament will have it all -- with luck, goal differential, total goals and total wins will be the steroid bump that this sport needs to boost interest and profits." He went on the comment, "if this outing goes well, we might be able to schedule a follow-up Platty Plush II in February 2012 to keep numbers up. After all, who really cares about a #1 SOS versus a #13 SOS when you're racking up the wins? Go Cards!";)

Bitter, much?

Re: DIII NCAA pairing speculation

I'm guessing that some people in Plattsburgh are thinking about the disallowed goal in the Midd/Norwich game right about now?

Pretty disgusting call. The official on the goal line was pretty sure signalling goal....wonder what could have come up in that discussion to overrule the call. It sure didn't look like a kicked puck to me. Would have been really tragic if that call had left 2 teams at home (i.e. if Middlebury had lost to Amherst in the NESCAC final)...

So the incessant whining by the Plattsburgh people is fairly hilarious...you'd think they'd never been screwed over before! (eventhough they weren't)

Steve,

I was looking straight at the ref when the puck went over the line and I was at the game high up in the press box as far to the right as I could be in the press box so I had a great view of the ref.

I don't think the video shows but the referee DEFINITELY hesistated before signaling for the goal. It was almost like the thought process judging by his face and gestures was "should I or shouldn't I?" and then he did after a delay, end up signaling goal.

I said it that night and I'll say it again. While watching it live, I did not think there was a kicking motion and I thought it was a good goal.

Take it for what it is worth.

I said the exact same thing to both Middlebury coaches (Mandigo and McNamara) as well as both Norwich coaches (Bolding and Maurice.)

All that said, it is what it is....I have the feeling if they could have pulled out one of those games with RIT (obviously, if they'd won the last one....), it wouldn't have mattered. You feel for the seniors and hope the underclassmen come back hungry. Plattsburgh, as does every team pretty much every year, has some serious holes to fill...

I, too feel for the Plattsburgh seniors, but if the call had gone the other way, we would now be talking about feeling bad for the Norwich girls....

Very true, but I don't know any of the Norwich girls....I'm a Plattsburgh homer!:D

Which brings us back to the original point of my first post on this subject. A questionable call like that should have only affected the two teams on the ice, but we now see the wide ranging impact it has on other teams. Had it gone the other way, not only might Platty be in and Norwich out, but it would likely mean Manhattanville vs. Plattsburgh this weekend and Middie sitting in the rocking chair waiting for the FF.

Re: DIII NCAA pairing speculation

Hey, speaking of strange calls, I have a question for anyone who knows the answer. In the NESCAC championship game, an Amherst D grabs a puck thats crossing the goal line with her hand. After a discussion the referee awards Midd a penalty shot. I know that touching a puck inside the crease is a penalty shot, but I thought another rule required the referee to award a goal if it is determined that a player prevented the puck from crossing the goal line illegally. This is usually enforced where there's an empty net and a defender throws a stick at the puck in flight. Is this an NCAA rule?

I'm not exactly sure what the rule is but I remember at a men's game the opposing team's defender tried to block the puck in the crease with his hands and we got a penalty shot.

Re: DIII NCAA pairing speculation

You can't cover the puck with any part of your body in the crease. If a player puts her hand on the puck, penalty shot. Has it under her shin pad, penalty shot. A sweeping motion with an open hand, keep playing.
Unless there was a rule change at the beginning of the year with all the others.

That's ironic that as rare as penalty shots are, especially in D-III women's hockey that there were TWO on the same day with one in the NESCAC championship game and another in the ECAC East championship game.

Well, there might have been a penalty shot in the ECAC East game, but according to the announcers on the NESCAC game webcast, there was a "shoot out."

I heard: "shout out to Hu evers listening" -- the announcers must have been Blooming surprised to see no other shooters.

Just out of curiosity Go J...has a team ever, in the history of NCAA Div 3 Women's Hockey... earned an at-large bid and the first round bye into the Semi's of the Final Four after losing their respective Championship game?

Re: DIII NCAA pairing speculation

Correct. The only time a goal can be awarded is if the goalie has been pulled for an extra attacker when the offence is committed.
