Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

So, fun trick I finally got to try out tonight:
Step 1: freeze a few sliced bananas.
Step 2: Place some of said frozen bananas in food processor.
Step 3: Blend until smooth and creamy
Step 4: Place in container, freeze additional 15-20 min
Step 5: Om nom nom. Same consistency of soft serve. Defreakinglicious.

How did I not learn about this until now?!?!?!??!

I tried this tonight with some homemade, sugar free chocolate sauce over it. Unbelievable. I didn't refreeze but I'll do that next time. I need to go get more bananas tomorrow.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Fun morning workout today, started off with a timed mile (6:23), then did situps on an incline with a 30 pound weight on the chest for a minute, pushups for a minute, dips for a minute, then burpees for a minute. Repeat to the dips, then do a nice piggyback run with a partner (~190lbs) across a soccer field a total of 3 times. Do one round of the situp to burpee circuit, onto a second timed mile (6:42). Just for fun another situp to burpee circuit (flat situps though!). And finish with a 3rd timed mile (6:29). Come home to run the dogs for 20 minutes. And done.

I think I've earned the carnitas tacos I'm about to scarf down.
You're a beast!

After being told not to run for two months, I finally am back on the road and getting my mile time back to 12:00 or so; I just hope I can complete the upcoming Fifth-Third 25K in the allotted 3.5 hour time frame.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

I am playing hockey again. Yahoo. No ill effects so far (played 6 times in 8 days, so that's probably a good sample), but I'm about 80-85%. Back to kickboxing next week, and back on the bike the week after that (maybe). I missed sweat.

Heck yes!

Ran my first official trail race today. Flat, but holy shyte sandy. 4 miles, just a shade over 36:00. I'll take it, all things considered. Moreover, it was fun.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Started working out with an Army buddy of mine. Not being one who enjoys doing cardio work, I do say I am enjoying it. Must be that I have someone to do it with that helps. He has me running with a weighted back to simulate running with a military rucksack. I can't go far, only about a half mile or so, but I told him I have a plan to surprise my wife and run her first 5K with her come the end of July, so that's short term goal number 1.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Who forgot to turn on the A/C yesterday???

Man, that was really tough. We did 6 sorta hilly miles, which have been reasonably easy over the past few months, but it was 85. Holy cow, that was miserable. It was almost a death march to finish- add another 30 seconds per mile, AND 10-15 bpm of my heart. It will take a few days to adjust.

What sucks right now, for the first few runs in the heat, my body is more adjusted for the cool, and I'm not sweating. I didn't sweat until I sat down at home, when I left a puddle on my seat. oddly enough, I hope its warm for our next few runs- I'd like to get into this summer mode as quickly as I can.

I'm getting in that mode, too. I went out yesterday in a long sleeve t-shirt and running pants and I roasted. As it gets warmer, I'll be running at 5-6 AM so I can beat the heat.

And the more I research the MTC, the more it gets interesting: if you don't finish in 6 hours, they will send a bus to collect you. Nothing like a time limit to kick you in the pants...

Nice! Good luck!

Yeah, that was a bit of a shock up here as well. It went from 55ish on Tuesday to 84 on Wednesday. It was warmer in Duluth/Superior than in the Twin Cities, IIRC. Outside of winter nights and the lake's effect on the temperature, that doesn't seem to happen too often. It had cooled a bit by the time the trail run I did started, but you could tell there were a bunch of us not used to heat above 50 yet.
I agree that I am ready for summer mode. It felt nice not wearing multiple layers.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Water-logged 12.5 miles this morning. Started off in a light rain and turned into a downpour; I could have run for another 10 miles...

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Here was today's Saturday:
1,500 reps of push-ups, crunches, dips, burpees, regular curls, squats/curl/thrusts, and oh so much more, with a total of 4.5 miles run in quarter mile circuits, with some wind sprints and stairs thrown in too. You know, just because.

7 days until a 22 mile run/hike in the desert with well over 8K in elevation change. Temps forecasted to be near 100. I'll be ecstatic if I finish in 8 hours, heck 9 hours would be nice.

I'm pretty sure that you need to go see a shrink, because it sounds like you need help.

Why thank you. Tonight was my last regular workout before the race. Not sure what I'm gonna do the next 4 days...probably just do a few hundred pushups and 100 situps with a 50 pound dumbbell the next few nights so I don't go completely crazy.

I wish I had your motivation.

I wish I had your motivation.

It's not motivation, it's just not listening to the voice in your head that says "we'll start tomorrow" or "I've done enough this week." If you want to do it Bob (and I know you do), just go do it. Simple.

And that's why I'm adding 22, 24, and 26 mile training runs to my repertoire this year. I honestly feel like I've had to reach for something that wasn't there the past three years and three marathons. Next year, I'm running an ultra, possibly the Chicago 50K or the North Country 50 Mile.

Just bought a new pair of Brooks DYAD 6. Was going to go with Mizuno Wave Alchemy 11, but the salesperson at Gazelle noticed I was rolling too far to the outside and recommended these. She also sold me a new pair of socks.

Fifth-Third 25K is only 4 days away.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

During today's visit with the dietitian, I learned how to eat properly after a race. That way I don't come home and wolf everything down.

Weight is down to 240.8; that's 25 lbs in three months.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Rocked the Fifth-Third 25K in 3:06:37. And you know what? Despite the pain in my quads, I kept going and at the end, I yelled "Mama, I'm coming home!" as I surged across the finish line. Next race is the Seaway 15K.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Here's how my marathon up two mountains ended up: Spoilers, helicopters are involved!

As for how I'm doing this year, I've put on about 10 pounds of muscles since the start of the year, working out consistently 4-5 times a week, and cut my mile time down to just above 6 minutes. I know I can push it below 6, but haven't timed myself in a month or so.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

We changed focus after both Mrs Alfa and I got hurt last year- instead of training for races, we are just running. So far, so good- we are up to 30-40 miles per week and have just started doing one speed event a week. Weight is coming off, and training while on vacation is going great- we did a run at both stops on the Posters Cruise to Mexico.

Relaxing for running has been really nice.
