Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

129.8 pounds. That puts my weight loss at about 19 pounds since August 2010, I can now run a 5K, and a 10K, unless it's hot. Then dear God I stink and almost die running two miles like I did today. :)

Insanity workout later on, then maybe a splash in the pool...yes I'm crazy. As soon as I got back into fitness, I realized: JFC, this is the most beautiful city on the planet, with the best weather. Get out there and take advantage of it.

This past year I learned to surf, and to steal the line from Toy Story, "falling...with style." I've hiked a bunch, increased my vertical leap exponentially, broke the plateau on the bench-press. All and all, I love life, I love this challenge, and I think I need to ramp up the intensity with another challenge. Maybe a marathon, or maybe a half to get used to it first?

I've been on the nutrition program called intermittent fasting. You eat all your food for the day, but you eat it in an 8 hour window. For me, I structured it to be noon to 8pm, when I'm most active. It's not been that hard except it's hard for me to get enough calories in the day!

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

I've decided that my dietitian can keep her handouts. I'm going to eat real, whole, traditional foods. Lots of organic meat, chicken WITH the skin on, fish, true whole grain breads, and full-fat dairy. If I could find full-fat Greek yogurt, I'd be all over it. Pass the bacon.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Starting my 2nd Whole30 of the year on September 10th (right when I get back from Vegas), and that will hopefully clear my body of all that crap that has been put into it. Once it's done, I need to remain gluten free and mostly dairy free. Too many people are telling me that my body does not appreciate wheat, and that dairy just doesn't have the nutritional benefits that most people think.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Because I injured my hamstring again, I started doing a workout DVD from the Biggest Loser. I like what I've done so far, and the cross-training can only help. With a minor miracle, I'll be ready for the Twin Cities marathon.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Dr. diagnosed me pre-diabetic back in september so I have already lost quite a bit of weight and have been exercising regularly.

Starting weight: 255 lbs.
Current weight: 220 lbs.
Goal Weight: 185 lbs.

Current Blood Sugar: more or less normal with no medication.

Update: Current weight is 181 lbs. I have surpassed my original goal weight. Now that I am at my current weight, am going to adjust my goal weight to 170 lbs. Anymore weight loss is purely cosmetic, health benefits have already been achieved.

I didn't get my miracle. Around mile 14 of the TC marathon, my strength just gave out and I had to be guided by hand onto the safety sweep bus. After EMS put me on the ground with my legs in the air, they escorted me via ambulance to Hennepin County Medical Center, where I received fluids and I walked out under my own power.

All I can say now is that my racing future is very cloudy and I don't know what I'll be doing next year. If I do anything at all, I'll end up limiting myself to 5 and 10K, getting my speed back as I continue to lose weight. As of today, my weight is down to 211, putting me well on pace to reach my target weight of 190 by year's end.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

I am actually about to start my first strict whole 30. I have pretty much been dairy and glutten free for two years now. But I am very curious what is going to happen when I give my body 30 days to heal. Right now I can tollerate glutten a bit (dairy I feel in my sinus almost instantly after consumption), where as glutten I will feel in my joints (no wheat before a big lifting day).

I think I am going to find that neither are doing me a favor and sugar is just evil too.

Did you see the article on mark's daily apple today about wheat?

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Spartan Race and Warrior Dash are NOT Similar.

Warrior Dash is a nice 5K with obscales, challenging but nothing impossible.

I didnt do the tough mudder because I thought it would be too hard (it was 10k at a ski resort up and down hills plus obscales I wasnt down with) but somehow I thought the Spartan race would be like the warrior dash.

I WAS WRONG.

About midway through the Spartan Race my goal had become just to survive it, and friends who had done the tough mudder said the spartan race made the mudder seem easy!

Althought if I had the chance to do it again I would, except they bumped up the race in IL to a super spartan and I just dont have the time to dedicate to train for that thing to not die.

I think next year, I want to do my first obstacle course race.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Its been a year since I've knowingly had wheat or any other grain. Mark's site is an interesting read, a must read if you ask me.
Yeah my boyfriend is about to do a whole 30 with me, he has never ditched the grains before. So he is going to be wicked fun for a couple of weeks, but I think he will be pleased with all the energy he will have after. I would extol the virtues of grain free living to everyone but I find nutrition is very much like religion and politics, people have their views and they stick to them, however wrong they maybe ;). Just wish more people would try grain and dairy free for 30 days and just see how much better they feel.
I think Mark’s site is great, because he has the simplest most accessible approach but I have seen Mark and Dallas (the folks at the Whole 9 speak) actually now that I think of it I have seen Mark Sisson too, but anyways I saw Melissa and Dallas first and it was at their workshop that I truly got it, and understood enough of the science behind it as well.
I will say I never know how to tell people how I eat, Paleo/Primal/Clean Living. Hi my name is Winger and I eat real food.

I will suggest Warrior Dash or the Zombie Run (Called Run for your Lives). Both a lot of fun, if you train you can kill it and no so hard you will feel miserable as the course hands your rear to you (yeah spartan race I am looking at you) If you find one in the middle of us I can meet you! (and it has to land on a non motorcycle track weekend :) )

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Working at getting my speed up on longer runs. Ran 4 miles with a 7:30 pace, should have gone another 2-3 miles at that pace, but have to go drinking instead (priorities). Trying to get a sub 1:45 half marathon, so I'm training to crack 1:30. Seems logical.

I eat diary but only Lactose free diary, aged cheeses and homemade yogurt that is fermented 24 hrs instead of the usual 4 to 6 hrs.

Its not an easy diet to follow if you start reading packages. everything has sugar in it including whole Chickens and Turkeys. Why they need sugar is beyond me? lots of stuff has grains in it and in the US 2% of the ingredients doesn't have to be listed on the label. Even spices have may have stuff in it to make the spice flow and not cake up.

Re: Be jelly

Re: Be jelly

Taking a break from running at least until Christmas. I wore my body out attempting to run high-mileage this year, and when I needed to perform my best, I ended up getting picked up by a bus. So with that in mind, I came up with the following strategy:

-No high mileage. Max at 25 miles per week.
-Nothing beyond a 5K- aim for a new PR.
-Speed and hill training must be a part of workouts.
-Cross-train. Swim, bike, lift... do something else besides run.
-Aim to race 6-8 5Ks next year. With one every weekend, this shouldn't be an issue.
-Do not race until March at the earliest. I had thought May, but I want to spread my races out.
-If bitten by the injury bug, stop everything, rest, and heal properly.
-When given advice, listen. Do not go off half-cocked.

I've now done two Whole30s this year. The first few days really do stink as you go through sugar withdrawal. Then it just becomes trying to find the food to make and trying to live off of water, tea, and black coffee. One of the best recipes I found was http://www.theclothesmakethegirl.com/2009/02/22/my-favorite-chili-recipe/"]http://www.theclothesmakethegirl.com/2009/02/22/my-favorite-chili-recipe/[/URL]

Also, if you have an iPad, I would definitely recommend the nom nom paleo app. She has an entire section for Whole30 recipes.

When I finished, I found out that I have a real sensitivity to gluten and milk. Yogurt and cheese don't seem to bother me, but adios milk and anything good that comes from wheat.

Winger, have you read their book It Starts With Food? Terrific read.
