Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

I've ridden just under 400 miles so far this month, working on both speed and endurance. I'll be tackling my first century ride of the year next week, so the May mileage will end up around 600. Hopefully I can do it in about 6 hours (thankfully, the weather is supposed to be cool this week with highs in the 60s after tomorrow).

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

2 Thoughts:
1. As convenient and helpful as GPS watches can be, I'm learning I run better and have more fun when I stop worrying about what the thing on my arm says, stop overthinking it, and just freaking run.
2. I very well may die prematurely because of it, but I really enjoy an ice cold Diet Coke.

Don't feel bad. We're all allowed one indulgence or another. Yours is Diet Coke, mine is coffee.

And ever since I got fired, I've been hitting the coffee real hard. Whenever I get depressed or stressed out, I'd rather have coffee...

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

I have made the decision to go dairy free. Lactose and I are clearly not working together, and even using dairy digestion aids I'm still noticing discomfort after eating milk based products. It is just not worth it.
I know some of you on here have eliminated dairy, and I'm just looking for advice, unexpected sources I should be aware of, and good dairy alternatives.

Thanks!

Just as long as she doesn't mix the Diet Coke with Mentos....

You might want to try almond or coconut milk.

It's her stomach; she can do what she wants.

And the way I'm going with coffee, I wouldn't be surprised if they kicked me out of Starbucks. "You've had enough." "I'LL TELL YOU WHEN I'VE HAD ENOUGH!"

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

You might want to try almond or coconut milk.

If it does not come from a mammal, it should not be called "milk"; it should be called "milk substitute".

/end rant

Diva, try this site: http://www.godairyfree.org/Table/Dairy-Substitutes/

Chocolate Rice Dream. Buy from Amazon.

Thanks, all! I've already been using coconut "milk" for a while now, so that part of things is covered. It's just the challenge now of reading labels better and researching foods to see whether or not they have dairy or dairy biproducts in them. What has really been a challenge, too, is finding recovery foods and drinks for after long runs because so many of them are milk based.
I also picked up a book at work, too, called "Eat & Run", by Scott Jurek. He's an ultramarathoner and native of this area, and the book deals a lot with him switching over to what he calls a "plant based" diet (he purposely avoids the word vegan because of the bat**** crazy negative connotations that come with that word a lot of the time.) It's giving me some good pointers as well. Not that I can see myself ever going full blown vegan, but it's neat to see the alternatives to milk, butter, cheese, etc that are out there and not as hard to track down/produce as I originally thought. The tie in to running as well is helpful.

Diva, how about trying paleo diet?

It's not off the table, but I've learned about myself that a massive all-at-once diet change doesn't work well for me. That, and I do have FM to contend with. I'm not the type to cook two separate meals, and me going no-dairy is posing enough of a challenge for me at the moment. So, down the road, it's a thought.

,My wife and kid want to eat, they eat what I cook.I do a paleo like diet for intestinal issues. Sometimes I'll make rice or potatoes for them but generally its paleo all the way. As far as Lactose is concerned, most aged cheeses are lactose free, cheddar as an example. I make yogurt that I keep heated for 24 hours, that consumes the lactose. The thing is its hard as I have to cook everything I eat, nothing from a box. In my case its either spend time in the kitchen or spend time in the bathroom:)

Speaking of, he's coming here in a week's time. Can not wait. For some reason, I'd rather root for him over Dean Karnazes.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

So... I joined Life Time Fitness. I signed up for TEAM Weight Loss training and personal training. I know myself well enough that I won't do it on my own. Now it's easy. I just show up and work.

Next thing to tackle is eating well. I do okay with breakfast and lunch; dinner and the weekends are my downfall. Baby steps...

Uh, because Scott is a genuinely nice person and Karnazes is a self-centered, arrogant *******?

Speaking of signings, I'll get to meet Adam Goucher again on Thursday. Pretty psyched about that. :)

Mel: good work! Baby steps, one foot in front of the other.

Good start, mel! One step at a time.

(nobody here knew me 10 years ago, but I've actually dropped almost 60lb, so anyone can do it)

Baby steps, mel! YOU CAN DO THIS!

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

Next year, I have two goals in mind:

1. My first Spartan Race/Warrior Dash/Tough Mudder race

2. My first 50K, or 31 mile race.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2012: Push It.

All of my race stuff is ready to go for the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon Saturday. It's odd to be prepping 2 nights before, but seeing as how I work from 8am-????pm tomorrow, I think I will be thanking myself for doing so in about 24 hours.

Good luck tomorrow! You'll do great!

We're about halfway through the year, and here's where I'm at with my goals:

1. Still drinking a full pot of coffee a day, but I've been switching to water and herbal tea after noon.

2. I have dropped 20 lbs, after gaining 38. Gone from 265 in February to 240.8 last month.

3. The Fifth-Third 25K was not my worst effort ever for that race, and I managed to average an 11:56 mile. Looking forward to averaging a 10:30 mile during the Twin Cities Marathon, thanks to having Sloe Gin, Quiz, and 'diva as Twitter accountability buddies.
