Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

Done with one. Was very much hoping for a sub 1:30, but the official time was 1:30:change. (side note- pretty much everyone we know who runs with a GPS system, it's 10.1 to 10.15 miles.... hmmmm). So offical speed was just over 9:00, which is a 13 second improvement over what I did a month ago. One week of FIRST looks pretty strong. Unofficially, my Garmin has me at a 9:54 pace. :)

But one gets a reminder how fast others are- I finished 49th...

Mrs Alfa beat me by at least a min, and no real soreness! She got 8th! And one of our friends who has been doing FIRST for a while won her class!

Good day to run.
Way to go alfa and Mrs. alfa!

I've been riding the bike and strength training for the past couple days, but I'm wondering if there's anything else I can do while my hamstring heals.

Thanks!

can you swim? If I could fit it in, I would, totally. And if I could not run, I'd be able to.... ;)

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

I can... I live 10 minutes away from Lake Michigan!

And I bet it's a swimmable temperature, unlike my big lake up here. :( I tried to stand it in after my long run yesterday, and I could only tolerate it for about a minute.
But, speaking of swimming in the big lake--the store where I work is putting on a wetsuit/triathlon transition clinic for the employees next week. Since the majority of us are runners and not triathletes, this should be rather entertaining.

At least youl can use it to reduce swelling! :) As good as an ice pack.

This is true.

Visited the doctor today and got scheduled for physical therapy. Since I don't know when I'll get the green light to run again, I'll skip the Coast Guard 5 and 10K and prepare to come back in August.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

I completed my century ride yesterday.

No idea what the next goal will be - really didn't think I'd get this one done so quickly.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

Had my first therapy session this morning. According to the therapist, my hamstrings are very tight and my hips are weak. She didn't give me a forecast for when I could run again.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

Punching and kicking things is still awesome. I could use something else to change things up, as I am getting pretty bored with spin.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

I posed this question on Facebook earlier, but I thought I'd ask it here too. About 5 weeks ago I broke the ulna in my right (dominant) arm playing softball. Up until yesterday I was in a cast that came up above my elbow, and instead of doing a lot of biking like I planned for the summer I've been on the shelf, hoping to avoid sweating too much and having my arm smell like moldy cheese for the past few weeks. Yesterday I got the long cast off, replaced with a short one that ends below my elbow. This morning I decided enough is enough and I need to get back on track. Aside from obvious ideas (walking, running), what can I do to get some exercise while I have a cast on my forearm. Bear in mind the cast loops across my palm so anything that involves gripping something with that hand is out.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

Racing news:

Last week's 15K: 1:19:28. Went out WAY too fast, and I got killed by the humidity. I also wasn't really a fan of this distance, which surprised me considering how much I liked the 10 mile race I did back in April.

Last night's 5 mile: 37:52. Again, took off way too fast, but held a solid pace after that. Now I'm left wondering what I could have done had I not been coming off a big mileage week and 10 hours of travel the day before.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

So far, our schedule is:
June 23- Solstace 10 mi- Northville, MI
July 2- Ciudad del Yunque 10k- Puerto Rico
Aug sometime- Milford 30k, Milford MI
October- Big Heart Big House 10k- AA, MI
october- Detroit Marathon.

Finished that a few weeks ago- man that was tough. For some reason, races start at 5:30 pm in Puerto Rico- it's hot (at least 90), and humid (at least 90)- normally. Ths one started a *little* cooler, but once the storm clouds cleared, it was hot. Finished in a little over 56 min, which I thought was better than last year, but no. Just not quite as painful.

And for a northerner, training in PR is tough, too. Did get all of our training runs in, but the 15 miler last week... wow.

No lingering effects, though. Did the scheduled 17 miler this morning at the target speed. Tired, sore, but happy.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

Got my therapy schedule. Provided all goes well and I don't do anything stupid, my last therapy appointment is August 3. I'm also weighing in at 220 and I'm thinking I should cut back a bit, at least until therapy's over.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

Well I did my half-iron despite not having trained for 4 weeks before the race. The 91 degree heat didn't help. I finished in 6:39:58. Was on pace for my in shape goal time of 6 hours after the bike, but started getting really bad cramps in my quads on the bike and just couldn't fight them off on the run and had to walk probably 2/3 of the run. I probably wasn't going to try to do another half next year, but now I'm ****ed off that I hurt myself playing softball right when I was really in shape and want to do one next year and actually run the run. Might pick one in September in the hopes that I don't get the heat we had yesterday. The past 2 races i've done in July have both been over 90 degrees.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

Started doing P90X with the wife (again) last week. Definitely more committed to completing it and seeing where it gets us this time around. 8 workouts in thus far and surprisingly, it feels good. The first week was very painful, esp in the lower body with the plyometric and legs & back workout. This week my body feels more comfortable with it and I've exceeded what I did in week 1 so that looks like a good sign. Only 82 more days to go.....

At least you did it, man. How many people (myself included) have never even attempted one?
How far in advance do you have to sign up for one? I'd say begin training and see where you're at before committing to a September race.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

Last post to this thread were way back on my birthday, and since then we've had 'divas...

Ran 18 miles this morning. 14 wasn't too bad, but I sure could tell I was running out of energy- my HR jumped up for the last 4, even with a good sized break in the middle.

But I did it, building a lot of confidence so far in advance of the October marathon. Took me an hour to recover- my body temp dropped quite a bit while I was digesting food.

Whew.

All the hard work paid off. I look killer in my tux and they had to take it in. :D

Well done, gentlemen. :)

Good work, both of you!

Got back on the road yesterday and ran 9 miles with my group. My coaches say I look great, and they want me to run 10 next week.
