Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

Did my 14 miler today. I didn't time it, but just going off clock time, it was somewhere in the neighborhood of 2:05. It was a perfect morning, and I felt awesome. :) Now, I taper. T-21 days until my next half.

Good job!

Yesterday I bought a pair of Mizuno Wave Alchemy 10s from Gazelle Sports; took em out for a run this morning. Seeing as I now weigh close to 200 lbs, I actually like a heavier shoe, and these do not have the same problem with the tongue that my Brooks had. I am ready for the Fifth-Third 25K on May 14...

Nice run- we do our 14 miler next Satuday. We did 12 this morning, and I was quite pleased how well it went. Good morning all the way around!

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

Never fails: every time there's a big race coming up, I fall and skin my knees a few days beforehand.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

@Moose: Wow, sounds like a run of bad luck. Hang in the there man.

I spent my winter trying to recover from runners knee/IT band pain. I wasn't able to run from November through end of March. Finally got a 2nd opinion from a retired physical therapist and he got me on the road to recovery.

The plan this summer is do sprints and oly distance tri's and focus mostly on the run. And then take another swing at Ironman WI in 2012.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

Has anyone done the Couch-to-5K plan? If so, what was your experience with it?

Ha ha yes. I literally got up off my couch and ran one.

Actually someone mentioned a redhook 5k at the end of may and wanted to see how difficult it would be running the whole thing through. If you have already done 1-2 mile runs, a 5k isn’t that bad at all. Just get out there and try it. The worst thing that happens is you stop and walk a bit.

I am hoping to keep an 8-9 minute a mile pace at the end of may. No training for it. Already playing 4 hour games of hockey . As nike says, just gonna ‘do it’.

To FTBG.... unless you have run before, and it was in HS which was not to long ago... Don't measure yourself on that. UNH is clearly a good athelete, and I would think it would be fun to see if we can prod him like we are 'diva. Seems like a person who can do some quick long distance runs, if you can get off the couch and run a 5k @ 8-9min.

I've been running regularly for just over 2 years now, and 8 min is hard to me. A year ago, I got as fast at 8:50 for a half, but after injury and some significant weight gain (8lb), I'm about 30-40 seconds off that now. And I'm satisfied with it, knowing IF I lose the weight and whatnot...

But doing a couch to 5k, people are different. You may do a 40min 5k, you may do a 21 min 5k- dunno. The point is that you are doing it. I, too, have no experience in the couch to 5k, but I saw 2 people do a couch to marathon last year (they were both HS students, so big advantage). You CAN do it.

What I would tell you- ignore the no pain, no gain matra. That's left to ONE training session a week. And JUST ONE. If you are supposed to run X miles without stopping in the plan, and you are just totally out of breath- go slower. I may be a total newbie at running, but I've seen a lot of people start at nothing, but manage their workouts and just do wonders.

For alternates- check the runners world website- they had some good articles in their magazine for beginner training plans for 5k, 10k, half, and fulls.

(I'll add an advertisement for the cruise I want to do in Tampa next spring prior to the FF- mrs alfa and I have run on shore during cruises. It's pretty fun, although it can be darned hot. We will probably run next year, too)

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

I should have added a disclaimer, but was hoping my involvement in this thread would act as one. Remember though, if I do an 8/9 minute pace, you can forget about anything over 1-2 miles ( or maybe 3 , we will see). Long story short is that the real runners on this thread would crush me, unless it was over short terrains ( think of gimli from lord of the rings). Listen to them before listening to me :p

Maybe just trying a 5k is a bad idea if you are in sub optimal condition. My laymen advice would be to work on suitable intervals. Get comfortable with 1200 meters, than 1600 meters. Continue to improve your times on both. Feel strong. As you finish strong, add more distance. My progression was 1 mile, to 1-2 miles ( break in between), than tried a 5k. This over the span of several years, all of which was inconsistent.

Overall, agreed here. There are different types of pain. Some are workable, some are very bad. You run the risk of serious injuries if you don’t know yourself and work through bad pain. When in doubt, don’t . its not worth permanent injuries. One time I was pulling heavy deadlifts, and I felt my goin tweak. Having not warmed up, I knew I just pulled my groin ( very common injury in ice hockey). I was partially injured for 8 months and it affected my performance.

And I hope I'm not mis-spoken, too- I'm not saying don't just go run 5k. I think most people can right off the couch. It's pretty awesome that you did it that easily, unh!

I'm just saying don't consider yourself a failure if you can't run it in 8min miles.

While it's kind of alarming to realize that world class marathoners do 26 miles faster than I can sprint, I can now deal with it.

As for injuries and working too hard- mrs alfa is finally getting over a hamstring pull. She did last July. Pain sure didn't equal gain.

Once upon a time ago back in 2001, I was really skinny. A bunch of my friends also had ambitions to start working out and get bigger. One cold morning at 5am ( because we were afraid of the gym people) it all began. I started with the mentality of leaning the ropes and easing myself into it. After a few sets of machine arm curls, a tricep pushdown, and some crunches, I went over to the bathroom thinking I was going to puke. My friend who had started a few days earlier mentioned that he subscribed to 'no pain no gain' and was trying to do way more than his athletic level allowed. Consequently, he never ended up sticking to it and never acquired the peak level of athletasism I am still striving for. Why? Because he got burned out from being in pain. Pain doesn't mean your doing it right and newer people really need to pay attention to this. You are better off sacrificing some gains so you can at least stick with a routine long enough to have it really work.

I am certainly happy 8/9 minute paces merit adulation. What should be assumed within this community is that ANY benchmark for someone is worthy of praise. You run a 10 minute mile? thats sick. you improve it in a few months? even better. At the end of the day, its you vs you. If an average women compared their back squat to winger's, theyd come up short and hate themselves. Staying active is not about that.

I am not starting my new job immediatly after leaving my old one, and since I will be on the seacoast in NH for a month or so, I am planning on doing this for a few days out of the week. its a different kind of workout, and challenging. having to work on footwork also touches on more than just slow twitch fiber too. Agility and coordination as well.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

managed to time a 5k at 25-26 minutes, which should be good enough for the real one. some of my friends claim they are down near 21, but I want to see them before I believe them. its like people's phantom 400 lb bench presses which don't seem to exist :p

Some of the elites can bang out a 5K in 15 minutes. Don't worry about them, just run your race.

And with the Fifth-Third 25K tomorrow, that's exactly the mantra I'm repeating. Don't worry about last year's epic failure, don't worry about my shins, don't worry about anything. Just run.

I just want to beat some people. I don’t expect to keep up with the serious long distance folk, as they train hard and have the genetics for it. I am a sprinter through and through so a 5k is a big achievement.

only a few weeks away!

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

Finished the Fifth-Third 25K in 2:54:30. Shinsplints aside, I ran a good race, holding back until roughly mile 12, when I told the pain to * itself, sucked it up, and ran the last 5K like no tomorrow.

So it wasn't a PR, but at least I didn't hit the wall and limp across the finish line. I like to think this race was the triumph of real food over Splenda and all other "diet" food.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

I ran the healthy kidney 10k in central park yesterday in 48:13. First time I've ever run a 10k as a race not part of a triathlon. It went really well, I had though I was going to be really pushing it to break 50 but I was way below that and felt pretty good afterwards. I did learn that 800m to go is way too early to try to pick up the pace for a finish in a race like that. I tried to kick at 800 and 400 and both times my body told me no. Gives me a decent idea of the pace I can push in the half ironman though.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2011: Better Than This.

Did a charity 5K this past Saturday - signed up for the "walk" version. Wound up doing ~17 minute miles, and finishing in just over 50 minutes (ran the last 1/4 mile).

Today, started the C25K plan. Cheap iPod app is invaluable - makes the "now run", "now walk" intervals idiot-proof and seamlessly interrupts my music. Had to work through shin splints the first 10 minutes, but eventually they go away, and I assume they will completely disappear with more training time. Found a couple 5Ks to shoot for later this summer.

Weighed in at 201 this morning (not as bad as I thought - feared it would be slightly worse). Hoping to lose 20 lbs. by the time I start to write my Master's thesis in September. I figure this is very do-able if I cut out pretty much all eating after 6 PM (I have a nasty snacking habit), and 80-90% of current alcohol consumption. Need to remember that whiskey - regardless of scotch, bourbon, Irish, etc. - is distilled from grains, therefore a 2 oz. shot and a cube does not really amount to much fewer calories than a bottle of domestic beer. :o
