Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

After reading the exciting news in this thread (moose, Case, etc.) and the continued success of the others, I'm making small changes on my own to try and combat a long standing weight issue. Since school has started, I've totally shunned elevators (and UMB has a campus that was built by someone who had a relative in the Union that is responsible for cement - the number of cement staircases here is ridiculous) and have taken to walking at least 1.6 miles per day (distance to the T from my house to and from school). Once the 40 days of rain is over (or what feels like 40 days anyway), I'll be adding longer distances.

Now, I'm focusing in on my diet (never had a real portion problem, more a content problem. I'm a starch junkie.) and have added a calorie counting app to my phone to help me track what I eat every day. The numbers are astounding. Breakfast alone was about 1000 calories! (medium DD ice coffee with skim and sugar, plain bagel-not toasted-butter) So, needless to say, it's opened my eyes to what I'm putting in my mouth.

Please keep posting the good stories - it's always nice to hear/read people's successes. Gives the rest of us hope/motivation.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

That is what always shocks me. To maintain my body weight with my activity level, I'm supposed to eat approximately 2400 calories a day, and it is mind-boggling how quickly you can get to that even if you are sticking to a healthy diet. I eat about 5-6 times a day, which means I can't eat more than (an average of) 450 calories per meal. It's a lot less food than you think.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Just to post my own status update:

Lost about 12 pounds in the past month, and starting to feel much better and more energetic. It was slow going at first (I started making changes about a month and a half ago), and I didn't lose anything the first two weeks, but started feeling better. I think I just needed to jump start my metabolism or something. Since then, I've consistently been losing 2-3 pounds each week.

No magic diet or anything here, just taking the common sense approach of eating better and working out more. I've cut out fast food and am bringing lunch to work, and I'm eating a lot more fruits and vegetables and fewer empty calories. I'm also drinking a lot more water. I don't feel like I'm dieting because I'm eating enough to satiate myself and enough variety that I don't feel like I'm deprived, while in reality I'm eating far fewer calories.

Also being more active in general - going to the gym at least 5 times a week, and usually 6. Friday is my "cheat day" - I don't go to the gym, and let myself indulge a little more that day. I actually look forward to going to the gym now - I may be bored while I'm there, but I feel so much better after. Great way to unwind at the end of the day.

This was my turning point. I got an Android phone on January 2nd, and the first App I added was Calorie Counter. I've used it religiously, and it is amazing (the fact that it has a bar-code scanner helps a ton). In fact, I can go back and look up everything I've eaten since I started this plan. Also, my Father and Sister have done the same thing (using their iPhones), and we all swear by it.

It is amazing to see how much you eat when you don't think about it. I think that the rules about posting calories at restaurants is a good start, but people still just need to step back and pay attention to what they put into their bodies (quantities and quality)! Realizing what your doing is the start. Once you realize that you can eat well, and not be hungary, just by making smart decisions about what you're eating, you'll be fine! Good luck!

Well as of yesterday I'm back on weight watchers. We shall see if I can have the same results I had last summer/ fall and keep more of it off threw the winter. My sister is getting marred this summer so my mom and I are both pushing hard to look good for those pictures.

Another reason to get a Droid over my stupid Crackberry.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I don't have a phone app, but I do use SparkPeople to track my food, exercise, and weight. I also convert what I've eaten into WW points for kicks and track it on my planner there.

Some days are still worse than others, but I'm really focusing on putting the right things in instead of the wrong things. And when I do go for the wrong things, I'm trying to eat less of them.

Of course, the best part of all of this has been the discovery that I've most likely grown out of my apple allergy. (Sounds weird, I know, but I couldn't eat apples, pears, and a few other fruits without a reaction.) Now that I can reincorporate them into my diet, I'm able to have that little bit of sweet without it being chock full of sugar.

I'm drinking a lot more water now, too. I've pretty much quit drinking anything but water, skim milk, and a cup of green tea now and again. I realized the Diet Coke wasn't something I needed, so I worked on cutting it out. I can have one everysometimes, but I don't drink it like I used to.

I think I'm definitely on board this time and I'm pretty excited about it.

Was it just an oral reaction, or systemic? I have oral allergy syndrome that's tied to my hay fever and I can't eat any raw fruits in that family without getting a reaction, either. Not that it matters, since you said you've grown out of it, but if it's hay-fever related cooking the fruits typically changes the protein structure enough that your body doesn't react.

I just looked on the crackberry appstore, there are 2 calorie counters there for you to choose from. I don't have one, but they are available. One is $5 the othe $3.

I was thinking more about the bar-code scanner that was mentioned, but thanks. I'm not sure I want to buy them since I'm probably getting a different phone when my contract is up next month, but it's good to know they have them.

I think it was more oral, but it frightened me when my throat would start to close up. It was just easier to stay away from them. I thought I'd give it a try since it had been awhile and I was definitely surprised when the old problems didn't arise.

FYI, Droid's is free. Not sure about iPhone, but I think it's free too...

Even better. :D

I know the feeling. Every time it has been a while and I really want an apple or pear (the two fruits I react the worst to, though the list of fruits I can't eat is longer than the ones I can. :( ) I decide to "test" it. Never a good idea, though, as, if anything, mine has gotten worse over the years.

It definitely sucks.
I imagine I'll have to watch it once the trees really start to bud. Last time I was tested, my birch reaction ran into whatever else was around it and everything I've read about these types of reactions to the fruits is very much tied to birch.

Ran for the first time in months. Alternated jogging and running like the Couch to 5K program suggests.

The feeling when you're done never gets old. You feel so good, even when in pain. And the sweat feels good too. You almost don't want to shower right away because you're still on such a wonderful high.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I've been told that for someone 6'7" and 35 years old, I should weigh between 170 and 220. I'm not sure if 170 is realistic (or even 220), but I'm going to set a new goal of 240 and see what happens now...

240 is a reasonable goal and re: ideal weight, looking on the CDC website, for a 6'6" person the high end of the healthy weight range is 215 lbs (so 6'7" is probably around 225)... assuming that you have a decent size frame, 235-240 may be a good weight for you given your height... at 6'7", you'd look beyond skinny at 170 imo... in the end though, body composition also plays a part...

as an example, i am 6'. the cdc website has the high end of my ideal weight at 185 lbs. i was a two-sport athlete in high school and played sports year-round and i was 180 lbs. I played sports in college and with a much more rigorous training program, by the time i graduated, i was 210 lbs. I didn't look or feel overweight, yet by cdc standards, i fell into that category on a weight basis... the reality was, i was in the best shape of my life and had a lot of muscle mass...

what i would recommend for you is to continue to focus your goals based on pound milestones for the time being, and when you hit your new goal of 240, start focusing on % body fat as your goal... you may carry/look good at 240, but may not be as solid as you'd like... a shift in focus will allow you to maintain that weight while changing your body comp
