Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I've been really working on my goal of losing weight this year. I spent a lot of time skating and playing broomball during the winter, but now that winter is a thing of the past (fingers crossed) I bought a membership at a local gym this week.

I'm really forcing myself to stick with this routine, especially since now I've got some financial skin in the game so to speak (I'm a little frugal :D).

So far this week down about 5 lbs. I've got a ways to go, as I'd like to ideally get down to between 210-220.

Any advise is certainly welcome as this is really the first time since I had a gym membership in college (2007) I've been getting into a truly consistent routine.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I'm trying to get into the whole running thing, since my left elbow and right bicep are currently acting up on me (go to the doctor monday)... it's kind of demoralizing when after a quarter mile or so my lungs feel like there is a 5 alarm fire in them. You marathoners and triathlon people are seriously messed in the head :D

Running is one hell of a drug. :D

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I pulled my groin doing walking lunges with weight this morning. :( It's the same one I pulled in December playing hockey. It really ****es me off because I warmed up and ran 2 miles before starting, so it shouldn't have happened.

Now I'm icing it and praying it's not too bad, since I have a game tonight and a game tomorrow.

The most imporant think I found is that you can't run too hard- if you do, you'll not improve AND probably will drop running.

If you can run with someone, at this point, you should be able to carry a conversation fairly easily. Especially as a beginner. That *may* mean a pretty slow pace, jogging slower than a fast walk, but keep it up, and don't over do it. If you don't know I'll suggest finding a simple heart rate monitor, and then figuring out what 70% max heart rate is. I currently try to run at 80% for long runs (and a possible marathon), 85-90% for 10k to half, and 95% for 5ks. The HR monitor isn't needed, but it can be a very useful tool to know if you are working hard enough AND not too hard.

When you are capable of running an hour (with water breaks) and not walking, then you are ready to mix in some speed work.

You probably feel just insanely slow, but stick with it, you'll get a lot better. And by not over doing it, the risk of injury is a lot less.

(side note- a work friend of Mrs Alfa is running more- with the competitor shoe store in town- he's now doing two things- one is running for 3 hours straight at a heart rate BELOW 140 BPM, and then speed work on top of that- one to build a lot of endurance, the other pure speed- his plans are just a 10k....)

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I did a 46 mile "leisurely" bike ride today which was a lot of fun. Biked up to the GWB, across in to jersey, and then down the jersey coast to the bayonne bridge over to Staten Island. Then took the ferry back up to manhattan and biked home.

Rats. Waited to register for the Chicago marathon and now it's closed. I'll look into Detroit and Indianapolis, and if those are full, I'll sign up for Grand Rapids again.

I did the same with the five borough bike tour here in nyc. Although i'm not too upset b/c last year it was kind of frustrating and a mob scene. Its sometimes better to just go out on the open road on your own.

You will be amazed how quickly it gets easier. Just a couple of weeks and you will notice a different. Just google couch to 5k for a program.

Bummer. When is Indy, if there is a half maybe I will go down. Or if you find a nice midrange run 10k to 15 miler during the summer in your hood I will drive up and run, I will proably run slowly, but I will come up and run. It just has to be around all these stupid weddings. :/ Or opportunites for people to pay me lots of money to spend lots of time with me.

Yeah the 5 Boro is starting to get insane. The last couple of years I am all about just starting at central park. :)

Did that last year, but got there too late and was still stuck in the mob going up to the 59th street bridge. Once we got over it opened up though.

Yeah if you get infront of the mob it isnt bad. One year I did it kept bottlenecking at all the bridges, and that was annoying. Now my gang just jumps in at central park, so we dont have to deal with that bottle neck.

Anyone else here use Wii Fit? I'm finding it's really helping on days when I really really don't want to do anything.

I'm really digging the boxing. :)

My wife and I use it quite a bit. Wii Fit and Wii Active.

Detroit shouldn't be a problem- we registered last year in July, and there were tons of spots left then, too.

Just remember to bring your passport if you do this one. It's required to get your packet.

Thanks for letting me know. I'll apply for my passport by the end of this week.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I haven't been to the YMCA for my usual cardio/strength in a week, since I caught this awful upper respiratory infection. I tried to go on the elliptical last week and only lasted about 10 minutes before my lungs gave up, so I ended up doing 15 minutes (that was pushing it) and then a mile walking around the indoor track. ELCAsoccer has been busy with meetings regarding a campaign he's volunteering for, so he hasn't been inclined to make it there, either. Hopefully we can get back on track soon. I have been eating less, too, just because I don't feel like getting up and making myself anything, and when I do, it's as little fuss as possible.

Why do you need your passport to get your packet??
