Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

The one more thing I'll say is make sure you find one that caters to all speed runners- from the beginners who see "Biggest Looser" and struggle to make 12min miles to ones who qualify for Boston.

That's the kind of group I'm with, and get inspiration from both ends of the speed spectrum. And it gives you plenty of space to improve- an less pressure to perform at a specific rate or KEEP UP. And the best part is that you probably will find a running partner who will run WITH you for the race you want- which is key, since you'll both need each other at one point or another. And those friends can be as big a motivator as your current friends- so I get my partners PLUS Mrs Alfa to make sure I keep up on it.

We may have been pretty lucky to find the Running Fit group, but it's pretty nice.

IMHO, I would think finding a gym should be similar.

Is that "Running Fit" as in the store? Love that store! I'm sad there isn't one up here. :(

Yeah this group in Glen Ellyn seems pretty good. We will find out when I start running with them next week.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

to those of us that are triathletes...got a gripe and wondering how to address it.

Lately, a few people have asked me when I'm going to complete a "full" triathlon. I ask if they mean the Ironman. Some of them say yeah, the Ironman, while others just say no, a full triathlon. I try to explain to them that any swim, bike, and run event, regardless of distance, is a full triathlon. But they look at me like I'm a moron. Then I want to ask them when was the last time they completed 1/3 of a triathlon.

Thoughts?

And to those of you that were interested in my short story, I'm about halfway done. It's going to be a great project when I'm not studying in Indy and St. Louis; I should have it done here soon.

If it is someone who actually knows about triathlons, they probably consider olympic distance a "full" triathlon and are just curious about what distance you are doing. If it is someone who doesn't know anything about triathlons, then they are just being a jerk.

Those are probably the same people that refer to sprint distance triathlons as "mini". :) :D

aren't you one of them? :p

I get it, that most people think of triathlon as the Ironman. But the definition of triathlon is any swim, bike, and run event. You do all three, and you're a triathlete. Swim one lap in the pool, bike a mile, and sprint around the block, and you have done a triathlon. Sanctioned, no. Realistic, no. Stupid, yes. But technically, you did it.

*end rant*

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

If he's not going to run, then teach him to massage in the RIGHT way. Even a techie like him can be taught to be useful to a 'cat like you, right? :D

(and, yes, I knew that)

On a realted, but side note, any local running groups? I'm so stunned by how much joining a running group has helped me.

Here's the progression:
Last march- struggled to run 11-12 min miles for 4 miles
last april-may trained, sometimes got down to 10min for 3 miles
June 5- first 10k ever- 10:17.
Joined running group- structured training twice a week, and then a recommeneded schedule.
Sped up through the summer
10k at 8:55 in mid august
10mi at 9:49 in mid setp
10k at 8:51 in early oct.
half at 9:47 in detroit/oct.
Rejoined for winter, kept running prior to new season.
Now training comfortably at 9:30, should be able to do my half in 9-9:10 in 5 more weeks.
WILL stay on for summer- have a 30k in Aug, half in Sept, and Full in Oct. planned.

I swear, if not for the team, there's no way I could improve like that. Just running WITH someone for the long runs (now up to 12 miles) is amazing.
And on the flip side, I honestly believe my running has suffered lately because I've had to run alone. As a result, I'm more nervous about the upcoming Fifth-Third 25K than I was about the marathon...

At least I picked up a brand new pair of Brooks Adrenaline shoes today from MC Sports; surprisingly enough, the salesman knew what a motion-control shoe was and recommended the Brooks right away. Very light, and I think I prefer these compared to my old Mizuno Wave Renegade 4s.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

here's the progress since i started doing weekly weigh-ins:

mid-february - 268lbs
3/10 - 258lbs
3/17 - 255lbs
3/24 - 251lbs
3/31 - 248lbs
4/07 - 246.5lbs
4/14 - 245lbs
4/21 - 244lbs
4/28 - 242lbs

still making progress, though it feels like it is slowing a bit... of course, i am in between winter and summer season's for hockey, and the with a couple of solid weekends of warm weather, i may have fallen victim to a cookout or two... to be expected, i suppose...

didn't quite get to the 230's by the end of the month like i had hoped, but i'm down 26lbs in about two and a half months... if i can get to 30lbs lost by three months, i'll be happy with a 10lb a month average...

There are winter Triathlons too. I love the idea of running in snowshoes. At the very least next year I am doing at least a snowshoe 5k ( I am of course assuming wisconsin will have them)

I get this with a coworker all the time and I've just given up. Every time he asks "so is your next race a full triathlon" I just say "yep" and move on.

With others I've had some luck explaining that triathlon denotes a sport not a distance. So just like it doesn't make any sense to ask if you're doing a full run, it doesn't make any sense ask if you're doing a full triathlon.

But most of the time I just move on because it's not worth the headaches and plus they think we're all crazy anyway... :D

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Got my last long run before my race next week; definitely liking the Brooks shoes so far. However, tripping while running uphill kind of sucks...

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Monthly totals for April. I think this is the first month i've ever really kept track diligently. I think the swim totals are still off a bit though.

S: 4836.66 Yd - 1h 07m 34s
B: 173.09 Mi - 12h 16m 10s
R: 18.73 Mi - 2h 46m 18s

Can you tell which event I like doing the best?

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I threw the barbell yesterday on accident yesterday and I went flying backwards... it was funny but I think I jarred my head slightly (my head didn't hit the ground).

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Quite the weekend of running.

Did my second 12 miler of this season, in a hilly area. Tough run, but quite satisfying. Good time to have a low miles week, that's for sure.

(side note- last weigh in for the competition- 175.0, from a starting point of 185- so I lost 10 lb in 12 weeks!)

So we slowly wake up this morning, and decide to run in our neighborhood 10k!
Even though I was pretty tired from yesterday's long run, I still managed to PR with a 53:43- shaving another 1:15 off of my best 10k time. Pretty cool, and even better that it's a local neighborhood race.

Again, I'm happy that I have a low miles week.:)
