Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Yes. This. Oh my goodness this. Nothing against the reduced fat/fat free, because I feel they are great training wheels for those who are looking to shift to a healthier lifestyle, but so often you see they are pumped full of chemicals and artificial crap...ugh.
More often than that, even, I think what you see is extra sugar/corn syrup to compensate (flavor-wise) for a product being low-fat or fat free. (I notice this a lot in salad dressings.)

I finally got back on my bike last night for the first time since before my foot started hurting, which was... gosh, almost three weeks ago. Wasn't as nice as I'd hoped, in part because it was windy and I kept getting crap blown into my eyes. Tomorrow's forecast calls for some rain in the morning, but hopefully it'll dry out by early afternoon so I can work off some of the beer I'm likely to drink at night.

Exactly. And, to be honest, super long ingredient lists that sound more like a chemistry set than an edible item just scare me. Forgive me if I'd rather eat the 120 calorie container of Greek yogurt that contains just milk and the necessary cultures than the 80 calorie "Light and Fit" that has an ingredient list that takes up the entire side of the container.

So, my first race of the year was going to be tomorrow, but seeing as how we're under a winter storm warning, I think I'm going to bow out. Not saying I won't go run at some point tomorrow, but paying $30 to race in a snowstorm? It might make me a bad Yooper, but no thanks.

Nah, you're absolutely right. Ingredients in food should look like... you know... food.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I unfortunately have not really done any exercise at all since last Sunday, which is probably a bad plan with my triathlon 9 weeks away. Hopefully once it cools off a bit this evening I can get out for a run.

It's nice out, not particularly hot, but REALLY windy. It took me about 35 minutes to get to the northern end of my ride and about 50 to get home (and the return trip was a more direct route).

Exactly. I'd rather eat the regular Provolone cheese than the reduced-fat, chemical-laden cheese.

As for the Fifth-Third 25K today, I did not run very well, posting a chip time of 3 hours, 26 minutes. To correct this, I'm reducing my running schedule to 4 days a week, sleeping in until at least 6:30 AM (unless I have to work), and running after breakfast, not before. I do not want to blow my hip out or post another 5+ hour time in the marathon this fall.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I now know how dopers feel! A while back I mentioned I was having problems with insomnia. Well, I finally discovered what I think is the root cause - vitamin b12 deficiency. A blood test showed I was anemic but not iron deficient.

Since I started taking a B12 suppliment, it's been like a whole new world. Workouts that used to exhaust me now seem like no big deal. My HR is lower and just have so much more energy.

And best of all, I'm sleeping harder then I can ever remember sleeping.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Had a fun weekend on vacation- we went up to Fairbanks (actually North Pole) to see my nephew graduate from high school, and just by chance, on Mothers Day, a local group had an 11 mile run through the local hills callsed the Murphy Dome Roam.

Brutal run- there was an 1200ft climb where you could take it over 8 miles or over 3 miles. Since I've been having some leg problems after some down hill training, we decided to run the 3 up, 8 down.

Not too bad- after going up at a 12 min/mile pace, we finished overall at about 9:30. It was really cool to run with that group, and would run that again in a second.

On a side note, I'm still having some rather irritating leg problems- right side quad, both the front part, and the inside leg part have problems. I could barely run on Monday after the 11 mile race. It's loosened up some with the travel back home, but it sure sucks. I'll go out in the rain tonight so that I know for sure that I can do my 14 mile run on Sunday, but I'm going to try to tough it out for the half marathon I've got coming up on June 6- if it's still there, I'll go see the doc after that.

The run sounds awesome!
Be careful with the leg, though. I hope that it doesn't get worse before it gets better!

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Really loving CrossFit so far. I finished the On-Ramp last week, and now I'm in the "Elements" classes. My only beef is that I feel like the instructor is holding me back a little bit more than I'd like. He's really focusing on making sure that I have the moves down, which is good, I guess, but I feel like I can do more than he is letting me.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

After April went so well with training, May has been awful. Barely done much in a week and a half and I'm going away this weekend which is going to make it hard to get back on the bandwagon again. Hopefully next week will bring my motivation (and some free time) back so I can get going. Running out of time before my races on July 18th and August 1st. I'm also thinking of biking back to NYC via the erie canal and albany after my August 1 triathlon in Ithaca. Depending if my wife comes, that could take anywhere from 6-8 days I think.

I know a few people who do CrossFit. They tell me that there is a strong emphasis on form and correct movement. So even if you feel you can move on, your instructor may still see some flaws in your workout. But keep at it, and you'll probably move on soon enough.

Be careful with your leg! Give it some rest; hopefully it will heal!

Rest seemed to help- did 8 miles last night at race pace. Feel pretty good this morning, but need to find an inside quad stretch. My leg really loosened up at about mile 6, and felt great until the end.

14 miles tomorrow.

they make more money the longer you enroll in classes. My form is fine and I learned through friends, watching others and via the internet.

Do the workout of the day, scale it to you. I don't see the need for a scale up class...just scale down the lifts.

This gym's one flat fee for unlimited attendance per month, so it doesn't make a difference that way. I just physically feel like I can do more.

And I want the group atmosphere because a) I don't work as hard on my own and b) I have no friends outside of work that live in a 100 mile radius of me, so I'm pretty starved for human contact!

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

finally got back to Denver and got out on my bike. Oh man did it feel good. :)

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Somewhere between getting the creatine and the fish oil I think I crossed a line... I have become one of them.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Did the big 14 miler this morning. Tough start, since my leg was pretty tight, but it eventually loosened up. Either that, or the rest of the pain just masked the tightness...:D

Really happy with the time- ran at 9:18, which is a) quite a bit faster than the 9:49 I did at the Detroit half, and b) only 8 seconds off my target for 3 weeks. It was a brutal hilly course, relative to the race, and was a good controlled training run.

Now the taper starts. 10 miles next week, 6 the week after (for the long runs), and the race 3 weeks from tomorrow.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Finally found a good bike saddle that doesn't crush the jewels. :o
