Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

While the points system may have worked, you have to change mindsets- this isn't a diet, but how you plan on living your life. And I'm sure you don't want to be counting points the rest of your life.

Basically, start with the points, and understand how it really works so that it's no longer a "diet" but how you naturally eat without much effort.

(that, and remember, "no pain, no gain" isn't really that true over the LONG run)

Good luck, though- you'll do fine.

Yeah, I'm not counting points forever, just through the end of my diet. My more salient hope is that I become more active in the long-run. I've been overwhelming what is usually a pretty decent metabolism lately, I shouldn't have too much problem keeping weight off if I stay active, like I was in high school and, erm, basic training. :)

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Ran my second 10K yesterday, and improved my time from 2 months ago by almost 4 minutes, coming in at 50:14. Was hoping to maybe break that 50:00 mark, but that will have to wait for next time I guess.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

double post here, but my first race of the season is in the books. 5 mile Cherry Creek Sneak. Since Quiz and I do this race together (tradition) I was slowed up a bit (I'm faster) but we both managed a 10:16 pace, or 51:23 for me. :)

You're saying you would finish first, but held back on her account? What a man! :p

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Finally got my weight bench fixed last night. Took three of us to pry a rod up enough so we could slip a bolt in the holes to keep the bench in the flat position. Next up is hang the heavy bag.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Went to my crossfit class tonight despite running a slight fever. I didn't want to miss another class. I managed to do everything, and I don't think anyone even noticed I was off, but it was probably not the best idea, since now I feel like I've been run over by a truck.

Maybe it helped work some of the sickness out faster.

I start my on ramp tomorrow and I think I figured how to make up the classes I will miss with my travel schedule this month. Except maybe for the 2nd to last one. But then just as my travel schedule is over I should be released into the crossfit wild. Yeah!

Didn't work. :( Fever's even higher, so now I just feel terrible AND I'm sore from the workout. I'm going to need to figure out how to do kips without tearing my hands on the bar, since they are completely raw now.

On the plus side, my boss is a germaphobe, so as soon as I told him I have a fever, he sent me home.

Lol.
That stinks. Lots of water and sleep, cures just about everything.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

hey, it's our tradition. Go screw yourself. :p

I think it's great that you two do that. Knowing my personality, I would not be able to handle it. I did a race with my mom a few years ago, and she's MUCH faster than me, especially at that point. Any fun that could have come from running with my mom was lost by my guilt for holding her back. But, still, if you both are OK with it then rock on. :D

Going back to my previous question/point I brought up-- I shut down one of my "naysayer" friends last night at a get-together. I griped a bit about not getting out to run yesterday, and she immediately came back with, "Oh, shut up, you're already skinny." I fired back at her, saying "It's got nothing to do with skinny. It's me wanting to run a half-marathon some time in the next year. It's an endurance thing."
All I got back was a "Oh, well, whatever."

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

You should tell her "There's a reason that I got this way. Maybe if you laid off the gravy and Cheetos, you might be skinny, too. Ranch dressing is not a food group."

It's tough more Mrs Alfa and I, too- she's about 30-40 seconds a mile faster than me. We started one race together, but after a couple of miles, I told her to go.

Maybe if I keep improving for our Marathon this fall.

(I kid, I kid) :D

Good comeback... And I hope you get those knees behaving soon. Don't you have an in house massuse?

Haha, I wish. Though, I'm visiting Coach Mom and Assistant Coach Little Sister this weekend, so I'm foreseeing lots of stretches and advice in the future. Like I said, it's not an inconvenient or hindering pain, it's just more annoying than anything.
Flashy Man (my boyfriend, in case you're not aware) and I will run together from time to time, but I can't see us racing together at any point. Maybe if I start building speed up, but I can't see it really happening.

If he's not going to run, then teach him to massage in the RIGHT way. Even a techie like him can be taught to be useful to a 'cat like you, right? :D

(and, yes, I knew that)

On a realted, but side note, any local running groups? I'm so stunned by how much joining a running group has helped me.

Here's the progression:
Last march- struggled to run 11-12 min miles for 4 miles
last april-may trained, sometimes got down to 10min for 3 miles
June 5- first 10k ever- 10:17.
Joined running group- structured training twice a week, and then a recommeneded schedule.
Sped up through the summer
10k at 8:55 in mid august
10mi at 9:49 in mid setp
10k at 8:51 in early oct.
half at 9:47 in detroit/oct.
Rejoined for winter, kept running prior to new season.
Now training comfortably at 9:30, should be able to do my half in 9-9:10 in 5 more weeks.
WILL stay on for summer- have a 30k in Aug, half in Sept, and Full in Oct. planned.

I swear, if not for the team, there's no way I could improve like that. Just running WITH someone for the long runs (now up to 12 miles) is amazing.

I have looked in to it, but aside from a fledgling group through NMU, there isn't much. There is the Upper Peninsula Road Runners Club that I have looked in to joining, but it doesn't seem like they do much for group runs outside of races. It could, however, help me build a network of runners so I could start a group.

I know meester huskyfan runs. Maybe he'd know some people who know some people that you could run with.

Gravy goes on the cheetos right?

You know I was wondering the other day "would a running group benfit me, and apparently the answer is yes. I will join today!

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I think you dip the Cheetos in the gravy.

I can't say too much, I need to get back to the Bowflexes. It's been a few months, and I didn't work with them very long then, either. I've got to just get myself into the habit of doing so, now that tax season is over. I'm at the weight I want to be, but I need to simply get in better shape.

The one more thing I'll say is make sure you find one that caters to all speed runners- from the beginners who see "Biggest Looser" and struggle to make 12min miles to ones who qualify for Boston.

That's the kind of group I'm with, and get inspiration from both ends of the speed spectrum. And it gives you plenty of space to improve- an less pressure to perform at a specific rate or KEEP UP. And the best part is that you probably will find a running partner who will run WITH you for the race you want- which is key, since you'll both need each other at one point or another. And those friends can be as big a motivator as your current friends- so I get my partners PLUS Mrs Alfa to make sure I keep up on it.

We may have been pretty lucky to find the Running Fit group, but it's pretty nice.

IMHO, I would think finding a gym should be similar.
