Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Moving Miggy to 1st probably keeps him more healthy in the long run.

Cabrera is someone I worry about after this season. The kinds of injuries he had, abdominal, back, hip, and groin, are not going to be things that just go away given his occupation. These injuries can become chronic. And, it looks like he might have groin surgery during the off-season. He was, as we all could see, only half the player he usually is during much of the last two to three months.

I think we should bid Jhonny Peralta a fond farewell, go with Iglesias at SS, and find someone who can be a consistent left-fielder and hitter. But, I'm not sure if that will help or hinder the Tigers for next year. I hope the left field position doesn't become another 2nd base musical chairs problem, as it was before they landed Infante.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Again, I don't want him for 5 years from now. This would be a short term from him. Hopefully 3 years and a parade down Woodward somewhere in there.

Completely agree. Brad Ausmus is the betting favorite right now, but I'd rather give Manuel a shot for a year or two to see if he can get them over the top, and then give Ausmus his opportunity.

Trading Prince means: 1. Likely still paying a huge part of his contract, which is just setting money on fire. 2. Getting pennies on the dollar in return for him. 3. Basically replacing him with Peralta, who still OPSed less than Prince did last year, despite a "down year" for Prince. I guess you can say it worked for the Red Sox, but buying high and selling low is generally a pretty dumb strategy.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Exactly on the managing prospects. We need to win now. Like, right this minute. We don't have a couple years for a manager to get his feet underneath him.

As for trading Fielder, 1) I believe he's got a no-trade, 2) what are you going to get in return, 3) does Mr. Ilitch sign off on it? I suspect #3 might be the biggest obstacle. Mr. Ilitch likes his superstars, both on the diamond and on the ice.

That and by next year, he should have most of his off the field issues settled, and I think would be do to return to form with his hitting. That might be the front office's thoughts on Prince next year anyways.

He actually had a worse batting average in his two post-seasons with Milwaukee than the two with Detroit. Hard to attribute a career of post-season failure to this season's off-field issues.

Yeah, no Brewer fan is surprised that he hasn't been clutch or even average in the post season for you guys.

He did nothing for us in two appearances.

Enjoyed the heck out of watching him come up through the system, but wasn't sad to see him go (at that price) - based on his no-shows in the playoffs.

Ausmus is being promoted by sports radio. Hiring from within is also an option, not a fan of Lloyd... but our pitching coach(Jeff Jones) should get consideration if this is a short term move. Maddon at TB has also been mentioned, that would be my choice. He turns straw into gold.

As for Fielder, I think we are stuck with that albatross. This could be a move not unlike some of the long term contracts for certain outfielders in the 2000's.

I never disliked Leyland- thought he had the right approach to how to handle the team full of stars. And sure, we're not going to like every move a manager made... but I think Jim was stubborn for the sake of being stubborn sometimes and the many examples of what happened are clear enough to prove our points.
I also wish he didn't use the Earl Weaver approach to offense... and try to use the ballpark to our advantage. Of course, you have to have guys that can run, too.

My biggest disappointment is that we had teams that were in a position to win WS titles and didn't because he got outcoached. But, he deserves credit for what he did accomplish, including the two pennants and three straight division titles.

If the Tigers take a huge chunk of Prince's contract, I'd love to have him back in Milwaukee. :D The Brewers don't really have to worry about the postseason, so who cares that he struggles in it? ;)

Jen- the guy produces during the season... I mean 25 HRs, 100 RBI's.... we'll take that. But geebus, the guy is making 215 million. He HAS to do SOMETHING in the playoffs other than K, hit a few meaningless singles and then comes off like Foghorn Leghorn when he is on the bases.

Lynn Henning says LLoyd McClenden has the inside track. I would think he would be a good manager. I was a fan of Leyland and finding someone who was as good in ways we as fans do not see will be tough to do.

And I'll say it again. Sign Ellsbury and pay him whatever it takes. He solves several problems at once.

I think Bora$ is looking for something north of $20 million / year. He's going to get clubs to bid against each other and themselves. Ells is going to get stupid money. He's good, but not $20 million good.

Tim Lincecum just signed for 26 million over 2 years.

Also Dombrowski is in the running for baseball commish. if he gets it he would leave after next season.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

The only person I have heard mention Dombrowski for MLB commissioner is Lynn Henning. It's very well known just what I think of Lynn Henning. Grain of salt there.

As for Ellsbury, I'm not interested at $20/year. Lincecum got what he did due to 2 Cy Youngs, and pitching still carrying a premium.

The last time Lincecum was good was three years ago. ! He's a has been and barely average.. It just illustrates how much money will be paid for average performance. If average performance gets 13 million, than 20 is not exceptional. I do agree though that pitching pays a premium.

Buck and McCarver mentioned it during the ALCS when they did the close shots of Dombrowski and his family.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

I called in to the pat caputo show today to ask about the tigers' off season. his comments.

1. Very unlikely to trade Scherzer
2. Porcello is languishing in the bull pen during the playoffs. He did well this year, might make good trade bait for bull pen help.
3. Ellsbury is a possibility. if they get him, it would be a big upgrade at center field and would make jackson who is arbitration eligible available to trade for left fielder or bull pen help.I thought Jackson could play left but apparently if they did this he would not.
4 Team not down on Prince that much. his numbers over the year were pretty good and finding someone to replace all those rbi's would be tough.

also they interviewed the present 3ed base coach for the dodgers. Seems like he would make a good fit.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Not a big Caputo fan, either. I heard waaay too much of his act while I listened to sports radio for the better part of 8 years or so.

Yes, saw last night that the Tigers interviewed Tim Wallach. He was the Dodgers' 3rd base coach, and was a 3rd baseman for the Expos while DD was the general manager in Montreal. Decent player, IIRC.

I still don't think we can afford to go through a learning curve for an inexperienced manager at this point. In 2008 or 2009, maybe. But our window is down to 1-2 years to get a championship. And given our franchise history, we only get opportunities like this roughly once every generation.

There's going to have to be some movement in the rotation, I would suspect. Teams don't generally keep the exact same rotation, 1-5 for going on three years. As for Jackson, that would be an interesting fit if we were to try him in LF. Regarding Prince, if the Dodgers don't take him (and they've got Adrian Gonzalez), I think we're stuck with him for the duration.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Someone alluded to the fact the Tigers lost because Leyland got "outcoached". That's way too simplistic, especially for a game like baseball. From an outsider's point of view, your bullpen let you down more than the manager did. It's up to the GM to put together a better group. You also had some issues with slowness/base running mistakes. And if Fielder gives you anything at all, probably a different series. You have some great players, but there are some obvious flaws that need to be addressed.

By the way, what was with the report that said Scherzer may be traded in the offseason? Where the hell did that come from and why did it come up during the playoffs?

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

He's arbitration eligible, a year from free agency, and Scott Boras is his agent. Oh, and Verlander, Cabrera and Fielder are already north of $20 mil/year. Mix in an 84 year old owner who is probably not in the best of health, given his appearances as of late, and a family that cares as much about the franchise Stevie Wonder does about the color of the sky.
