Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

I'm pretty sure they aren't. M live is reporting that the Tigers are going to include some cash.
I think Kinzler is an upgrade and miggy will be better at first. The question is, who plays third?

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

That's the million dollar question. I suspect they're going to cram Castellanos into that position. But this time they'd better have a backup plan if he's hitting .166 next Memorial Day.

We'll see who pays what when the no-trades get waived and physicals get passed.

$50 million and Iggy?

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

I hope not, and hell no.
Well it's not $50M

Here is the math on the finances: Prince owed $168M. #Tigers pay $30M of that, plus Kinsler’s $62M - total of $92M. Savings of $76M.

well so much for Cano. What third basemen are out there that we could get? There are no attractive free agents. So either we trade for someone else, say Chris Johnson. (in which case I will have died and gone to heaven), or we use Casteillanos.

Don't totally hate the move. Ilitch has money to burn to get himself a championship, but that $76M can be spent on a little more infield help, a solid closer, some bullpen help, and heck, throw in a backup catcher or have Avila spend time in the Matrix so that he can get less dinged up this year.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Mixed blessing here. Fielder was a big presence in the lineup and helped protect Miggy. He did produce during the regular season which will be missed and wasn't a complete liability at 1B. He appeared to hustle on the field and never missed a game. Can't complain about getting rid of a bad contract, which may keep some core players and add more FA's.

Downside: He had zero RBI's in the playoffs in 2 seasons and was 4/22 this season, plus that baserunning blunder in Boston. His weight was out of control. Definitely distracted by his personal issues and got aloof, which spurred his end of season comments. I am not putting much stock into this, but there is a report (spurred by a Denny McLain sports radio interview) alleging that his divorce was a result of an ex-Tiger's affair with his wife that the clubhouse knew about. That Tiger was traded last season.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Oh, and lost in all the excitement: Tigers re-sign Coke for 1 year.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Tigers trade Doug Fister to the Nationals. Details coming...

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

All right. Here's what we got back:

Ian Krol - rookie reliever
Steve Lombardozzi - utility guy, basically a major league Danny Worth. No stick
Robbie Ray - AA pitcher with upside, but some work to do yet.

Not exactly overjoyed here. But at least we're not trading Scherzer.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

And now we might be close to grabbing our closer.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Hate, hate, hate the trade. We give up a 14 game winner, clutch in the playoffs, for essentially a a LHP w/ potential and a bag of AAA horseballs.

Smyly *better* make his bosses look good and at least match Fister's win total.

Yeah, glad we are keeping Scherzer, but at what price?

And what closer are we signing? Washed up Wilson?

There better be more juice behind this wheeling & dealing or my skeptometer will climb back up to 7 or 8.
