Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

Magic # at 6- 11.5 game lead over both the Indians and Sox.

Any reaction to Jackson getting thrown at? (Come on, hard to sell that the ball "slipped". Caught him square in the back.)

JV goes for 23 tonight. Sox have had some good luck against him, so this one isn't automatic. BUT, I think emotions are simmering in both dugouts. Could be an interesting last two games.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

Seven shutout innings from Verlander. Win number 23. 11 wins in a row. Whatevs.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

Magic # down to 3 since Cleveland lost also, 12.5 ahead with the Indians and Chicago tied for 2nd. Penny goes today and Cleveland is still in Texas. Could be looking at clinching in Oakland. 86-62 has already lapped last year by 5 wins. Still 2 games up on Texas for 2nd playoff spot in AL, and 1/2 game behind Boston for 2nd best record in AL, 4.5 GB NY.

Avila ties the game at 5 in the top of the 9th with a 2-run PH homer. If Ozzie wasn't already coaching the Marlins in his head, it would have exploded by now.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

Valverde strikes out the side in the 10th. 12 wins in a row.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

Magic number is 3, and Cleveland is getting smoked 9-1 tonight, so it's probably down to 2.

This could end tomorrow night.

Yep, down to 2 now. Tigers @ Oakland for 4 games. Cleveland still in Texas for 1, go to Minnesota for 3 and home for a makeup with Seattle while the Sox go to KC for 4. If for some reason they don't clinch out west, the Tigers go to KC for 2 after this and the Sox go to Cleveland. Tigers are still 2 games over Texas for the 2nd playoff spot, while now taking over the 2nd overall best record from Boston by 1/2 game. That is still plenty of incentive to continue to push the envelope.

Brad Penny: have a nice life.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

Agree. Penny's days as a Tiger are numbered. Fister looks like a solid #2 guy in the rotation right behind JV. He should flirt with winning 20 games a season for a long time. I think Scherzer and Porcello are destined to be 'Milt Wilcox' type pitchers, winning at least 15 but rarely getting 20 wins. And for the 3rd and 4th guys in the rotation, thats great! Alberqurque looks good too!

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

Texas has just defeated Cleveland. The magic number is at 1.

The Detroit Tigers have clinched at least a tie for the AL Central title.

As for Penny, that's fine. He was a 1-year flyer to bridge the gap until such time as Jacob Turner could arrive in Detroit. That appears to be the game plan for next season. Regarding Porcello and Scherzer, keep in mind that they are very young in their careers. Porcello is just 23, and while Scherzer is a bit older, this is only his 3rd season in the majors as well. He's got to be able to lock down his mechanics (case in point: tonight). Both of these guys have a ton more stuff than a Milt Wilcox-type ever had.

I was just about to point out that with it 4-0 A's after two, if they do storm back in the 9th inning again, about 8 people in Michigan will see the Tigers win their first division in 24 years.

Location, location, location. Not exactly "the art of pitching" or hitting last night. Oh well, had to end sometime. I just hope some NY writer doesn't decide the streak was just because it came at the expense of the Central division. 29 homers given up now by Scherzer. Yikes. The division gets clinched tonight.

Edit: The Tigers also own a losing record against the West and the NL.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

The lights are out, nobody's home, and Stormtroopers are wandering around the stadium.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

How many fans in the stands are going to get stabbed while the lights are out? I'll guess both of them.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

Tigers fail to score the guy from third with less than 2 outs for the third time tonight. But Bettimits triple scores Perralta for the 2-1 lead, going to bottom of 6th.
