MARTINEZ! Grand Slam!

V-Mart hits a go-ahead grand slam in the top of the 7th. 7-4 Tigers. It puts Verlander in line for the win as well, if they hang on, which is good because JV was at 110+ pitches through 6.

8-6 final. 22 wins for Justin Verlander. I'll let somebody else post the sweep video.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

Well, last week I said that as of today we would know where we stand. After going a perfect 6-0 against our two closest division rivals, it is clear that, short of major injuries, a minor miracle in Cleveland or Chicago and a catastrophic collapse, the division is ours.
10 games left at home and a final 9 game road trip after this weekend's series against the Twins. 9 game lead with 19 to go. 92 wins would be a terrific season, even with a watered down division.

I am still concerned about the amount of runs our pitching is giving up and having to rally to win games, but wins are wins. It can't
happen in the playoffs. I don't know if I would prefer them starting on the road in NY or taking over the 2nd playoff division position and
hosting the Red Sox. I don't see Texas or the Angels overtaking the Sox for the wildcard. We'll see.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

I don't care that Verlander only plays one out of five days. He's involved in more plays on that day than any position player is in five. And most of those plays go his way.

A couple of weeks ago, I heard someone make the point that Verlander has faced something like 783 batters, and if you added up Granderson's AB's and fielding plays, it came up to 794 or so.

Thinking of going to the Twins at Tigers game on 9-11. Does anybody have what the pitching matchups should be for that day??

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

Nice comeback win on Friday. Penny certainly isn't going to around next year, right?
90 wins a good possibility now. 18 to go, 9.5 games up. Go 18-0 and win 100 games ;)

Oh, and heard that Twins fans are booing Joe Mauer? Don't understand that.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

About the booing of Joe Mauer... I, myself, don't condone it, but my guess would be the fans are tired of him underproducing, not playing, and being paid a crap ton of money for it.

That said, I still hope they can take the next two games from the Tigers.
But it probably won't happen.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

Inge with a walk-off bomb, of all people.

3-2 final. Magic number is 9, regardless of the CWS-CLE result.

Mauer has given his blood and sweat for the Twins. We'll gladly take him. Class act, a real gamer. I don't see where people are maligning him for being injured. Same with Morneau.

Unbelievable- three walkoffs in the last eight home games. I hope they have more in the tank for the playoffs.

10 1/2 game lead. Magic number at 7, three with CWS up next.

Only 4.5 games behind NYY for top spot in AL. (Yanks have 1 game in hand.) 1.5 game lead over Texas for #2 spot in playoffs. (Boston is 1 full game ahead of Tigers in standings, too.) Of course, we all know that the Central is a handicapped division, so it is not a balanced comparison here. Tampa is closing on Boston (3.5 GB) for wildcard. Angels look to be done unless they can catch Texas (2.5 GB). Texas only has 15 games left, where most of the teams have 16- with TB having 17 left.

Tigers can finish 92-70 if they went 8-8 the rest of the schedule. Last road trip with @CWS and then 4 @ Oakland. Verlander has 3 starts left: @ Chicago, @ Oakland and home against Baltimore. We'll see Fister and Sherzer 3 more times and Penny 3 more times. Porcello is probably going to get 4 starts including tonight.

In the NL, Philly is the cream of MLB at 94-49. Milwaukee, AZ and Atl appear to be the other playoff teams unless StL. makes a miracle run to catch Milwaukee or Atlanta.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

Do I hear 10 straight????

12-2 Tiggers in the Top of the 6th......

Wait, Santiago again with a double, 14-2 now!
The domination of the Central continues. This is nuts.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

I don't see how Ozzie survives this with his job intact.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

Good God, that pitch was never less than a foot off the ground. I know it's 14-2 but I don't see how that ump can rule that ball hit the ground when it never got as low as the batter's shins. Angel Hernandez doesn't butcher calls that bad.

I don't think he cares. If Williams fires him, Jeffrey Loria will be on Line 2 with the Marlins job.
