8-7 Final. Benoit closes the show.

Yeah, well, you know who bats after Raburn? The Twins.

This is funny: walking in a local mall last night, I passed an A&W restaurant and saw a poster of Raburn with a sign on it: "Next time I hit a home run, come in and receive .25 off of a coney island at A&W!"

Good thing I don't go there for the hot dogs.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 1 - The Lou Whitaker version

Well, they're not going to lose a lot on that promotion.

CABRERA!!!

4-0, bottom 3

3-run shot for Cabrera

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 1 - The Lou Whitaker version

Man, when it rains, it pours. And the Twins are wandering through a monsoon right now.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 1 - The Lou Whitaker version

Ricky, don't ever dive for a ball like that again.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 1 - The Lou Whitaker version

Dear Tigers, the division is yours this year. This Twins team is not going to come back in the second half like we've seen other Twins teams do.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 1 - The Lou Whitaker version

I think Cleveland might have a say in whose division it is.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 1 - The Lou Whitaker version

I don't like handing out an IBB to the tying run, even if it is Morneau.

I think that Cleveland will come back a bit, they're better than everyone thought, but I think they end the year around .500. IMO, Detroit should be a better than .500 team.

I think it had more to do with getting a righty-righty match-up against a hitter that happened to be 0-for-7 against Valverde; now 0-for-8.

Which is funny considering:

Their #3 hitter (all who have been slotted there) has a .209 average for the season (no joke)
They have the 29th ranked combined slugging/on base % in the league (only Seattle is worse)
Cabrera is the only power threat- Peralta occasionally, Boesch when he decides to swing the bat at pitches not five feet off of the plate or doesn't take fastballs low and inside (a LH'd dream) for strikes
Martinez has been a nice addition, but can't play more than 130 games
Raburn is a defensive liability at any position and can't hit his weight
3b, 2b and LF are spots of need, not just want
Magglio and Guillen will be lucky to finish the season in a Tigers uniform, IF either come back
Jackson has been a major offensive disappointment this season
The Toledo-Detroit junket will not carry this team outside of the division
Pitching is the only thing that can salvage an above .500 season- and that includes the inconsistent bullpen.

Still, only 5 out and 2 out of the wildcard. Smoke and mirrors I think.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 1 - The Lou Whitaker version

Inge to the DL with mono. Too much to hope if he slobbered on Raburn before he left?

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 1 - The Lou Whitaker version

Read an article today saying the Tigers were one of seven MLB teams possibly out of debt compliance (Mets, Dodgers, Rangers, Nationals, Tigers are the names I recall). This could mean many things, but the main rule seems to be that you can't be over 10x revenue in debt.

The Ilitches have had the Tigers pretty leveraged for at least a decade, since the stadium was built for sure. However, the Ilitches are in pretty nice shape financially overall, with Little Caesars, the casino Mrs. Ilitch owns (which is probably the weakest part of their portfolio), and the Red Wings. If they got in a pinch I don't think they would have any problem meeting any cash call that comes their way.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 1 - The Lou Whitaker version

It's early on, but it looks like Andy Oliver is suffering from a form of Bonderman's Disease: struggling to get through the 1st inning.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 1 - The Lou Whitaker version

It's looking more like Dontrelle Willis disease. (The strike zone one, not the crazy one)
