I guess Jimmy wants a 61-pitch loss out of Valverde. He never should have been brought into a 6-1 game in the 8th. Now you've just about burned him for the rest of the weekend.

This is just brilliant managing. That whirring sound you hear is Casey Stengel spinning in his grave.

Valverde hasn't been around the plate all goddammed inning. Don't expect to get a close call here, for God's sake.

wt f was leyland thinking.. bringing in the closer after a long layoff for a 4 out save and then letting him walk 4 batters and giving up a grandslam before even getting someone else up in the bullpen.. and then never bringing him in! walking drew was the only smart move he made (Drew 6 for 10 off JV). only theo's incompetence in signing cameron could trump what leyland was trying to do.

all in all, good win over boston in a lester start. and dodged a bullet with the galarraga injury.

They oughta duct-tape his goddammed mouth shut after his piece of managing. I thought Phil Garner was on the bench again. First, you don't bring your closer in with a 5-run lead in the 8th, and then you don't let him throw 47 pitches in the 9th. Now he's not pitching Saturday or Sunday. On top of that, Valverde doesn't look right. I'm still guessing a blister. His fastball is AWOL.

I can't remember the last time I was this bent after a win. Fernando Rodney thought that was a scary 9th inning.

yah brain fart. i knew that. the fact that it was a non save situation was even more mind boggling. blew past his career high for pitches in an outing too

It's hard to beat anyone, much less the Red Sox in Fenway, with half your line-up injured and half your bullpen unavailable. Who knew?

Maybe if Leyland hadn't let Mr. Potato Head throw 9732948324 pitches last night, this wouldn't have happened.

Considering what happened today, we're all geniuses. :confused:

What a load of shart. And Hammer, IIRC, Valverde hasn't been right since taking a hit off of his leg, too.

The announcers were sounding rather moronic about the IBB in the 9th. No, they didn't put the guy on for the lefty-lefty matchup. They put the guy on b/c the Sox had hit into a few DP's in the game, Ortiz wasn't really hitting anything, and it improved the odds of a force out.

Tough loss, though.
