Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

That half inning reminded me why I am glad we are in a pitchers park tonight.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

Scherzer is going to throw a gem and strike out about 12, and get beat 2-1 or 3-2.

Hi there.

9 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 9 K's, 1 BB, 106 pitches.

No decision.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

That non hit and run made the difference. As he would be at 3B otherwise.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

It didn't matter. I saw this coming in the 3rd inning. Our offense is about as effective as a group of blind men trying to drive a dump truck to the moon. We could have played until Christmas morning and we still wouldn't have scored.

Wow, when you're right, you're right. The kid deserved better than he got tonight.

Well, when you trot out a lineup that puts Cabrera behind 3 rookies, and stick Gerald Laird at the bottom, against Liriano, well, even Miss Cleo could see this one coming. This one was extremely predictable.

Scherzer was better than brilliant tonight. But when you've got Cabrera and the Eight Derelicts for offense, you can't expect a whole lot.

These are the painful steps to building for next year. The pitching staff with Verlander, Sherzer and even Porcello will be okay. They need to add a bonafide fourth starter. Bonderman, Gallaraga and Toledo du jour won't cut it. The bullpen has been horrid in the second half, mostly because Valverde is probably hurt and the rest of them have been overworked due to injuries.

But, it is the large gap between promising rookies like Wells, Boesch and Jackson that is more of a concern. Rhymes is a nice utility guy, but not an everyday player. Ditto Santiago. Inge and Peralta may not be back, and if one or both are, it will be more miss than hit. Catching is abysmal. Guillen is on his last legs, literally. The only position not up for grabs is at 1b. Rayburn is a utility player. Ordonez needs to be replaced, even if he is a .300 hitter. No sense in even talking about Damon since it seems like the organization is only using him as a decoy or PH now.

I can't see how this team will compete for the division next season unless a major trade is made again to fill in so many holes.

I may be buying the beer soon because of that first half, but in the end there is no difference in finishing with 76 wins or 69 wins. And next year may only be slightly better unless some overhauling is done again.

KELLY!!

2-0, Top 2, another one pending...

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

Triple for Jackson, not a homer, Rhymes ended the inning.

Verlander gives it right back within 4 hitters. To quote Johnny Morton, "He gave up that *** like a $2 whore"

And then a couple other things happened.

I'm not sure "things" adaquately explain the insanity.

The one thing that the Tigers have going for them next year is that they should have about 60 million or so to play with when it comes to signing other guys.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

Yesterday's win puts the Tigers at 69-70 for the season. I concede to Hammer, although mediocrity is still firmly upon us.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

Throwing out the first pitch tonight, Jerry Hodak.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

Ozzie Guillen is going to have a aneurysm if this keeps up.

5-1 final as King Jeremy throws a gem.

That makes 70 wins on the season, which leads us to..................
