Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

9-7 Sweeping the White Sox in Chicago. Laird?!?!?! actually hit the ball and didn't make an out with runners on base. We've also made it rather likely that the Twins will clinch the Central in Comerica this weekend. So even when we win, we lose.

The way the Sox are going, the Twins might have this thing clinched by Wednesday night. Oakland has been a nightmare for Chicago.

And the Twins, evidently. Glad we are done with them.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

Tigers win their 4th in a row last night. They're only 3 games out of 2nd, with the White Sox in complete freefall. I fully expect the Twins to clinch the division this week.

I KNEW IT! I *ING KNEW IT....
Jose Valverde, the Tigers closer, continues to have aches and pains in his right (pitching) elbow.

Leyland said the Tigers don't believe Valverde's problem is serious, and precautionary tests Valverde underwent Monday confirmed it.

Really? You don't say.......

QUICK, UNRELATED POINT OF HOUSEKEEPING HERE!!!

Some of you that I have sent emails to in the past may be getting an email from me, dated today. It did not come from me. I have not sent anyone email today. I received this email from someone else, and opened it to find a link that took me to an....um.....online prescription site. I've been spammed, and if it goes through the rest of my Inbox and finds its way to you, I apologize. It is unintended.

Please delete the email without opening it. I apologize again for the inconvenience.

I am posting this in multiple places on purpose.

WELLS!!!!!

10-0, bottom 7.

Verlander well on pace for win #18. Also a 2-run rocket by Cabrera. Gardenhire got run two innings ago due to a bad call on a ground rule double to left that wound up a ground rule triple. I suspect that it was more of a matter of his team playing like dog* and an attempt to fire his team up. *shrug* It didn't work.

10-1 final. Verlander goes the distance, but loses the shutout in the 9th due to sloppy fielding.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

Verlander gets points for not throttling Rhymey in the 9th inning. The other error is at least understandable. Peralta had to make a quick play on a slow ground ball. It shouldn't happen with a major league caliber SS, but still.

Rhymey had Jason Kubel running down the line, and not running particularly hard at that since everyone knew it would take the stupidest play ever for Kubel to reach, and yet Rhymey comes up like Rickey Henderson is bursting down the line and misses the throw by 10 feet with Kubel not even in the frame on TV. If he had gotten up, dusted himself off, and walked over to first base to drop the ball into Worth's glove, Verlander probably would have had his shutout.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

Well, I was going to watch the Tigers for an hour or so until the Boise State game came on, but I saw that King Jeremy is doing his best Charlie Brown imitation on the mound, and that it's 5-0 Twins in the top of the 1st. Looks like I'll be watching football for the rest of the evening.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

You maybe gave up on this one a little too early.

Solo shot for Avila, 2-run homer for Kelly, and 2-run bomb by Cabrera and the Tigers are up 7-5.

EDIT: 7-6. Still a long, long ways to go in this one.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

In this case, I'm keeping the TV tuned away from FSD.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

It's worth tuning in if you like home run derbies. 7-7 now on another homer.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

Home run derby and Comerica Park. Somehow I suspect that Lynn Henning will not be penning a column about how the fences need to be moved in about 80 feet.

11-10 in the bottom of the 13th. Crazy way to get a win.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

Fun fact: The next time Brandon Inge strikes out he will be the all-time franchise leader in K's.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

Passing Lou Whitaker, who wouldn't have been my first guess as that record holder.

Yeah, would have thought that would have been one of the records that Ty Cobb would still hold.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

Ty Cobb didn't hit .367 for his career by accident. He didn't strike out much, nor did anyone back then, really.

Looking back on it, it shouldn't surprise us too much that Whitaker could hold that record. There aren't a lot of guys that played 19 years with the Tigers. Sure, you had Kaline, Gehringer and Cobb, but they were much better hitters and piled up a lot more hits than Whitaker did, and again, played in eras where there just weren't as many strikeouts in general, especially Gehringer.

True, but he did play for like forever back then too.
