Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply
Well, we knew this team had holes back in March. This team wasn't ready to contend. I think I said 80-84 wins, and that's about what they're on pace for. I started telling everyone last fall that this was going to be a transition year.
The injuries got away from them a bit, and for having to play so many rookies, this isn't that bad of a year. However, I still think the biggest mistake was not offering Polanco arbitration, because that would have taken the pressure off of Sizemore and Rhymes at 2B. While I like what I see, I'm not sold on Will Rhymes yet. I remember last fall and a certain lefty named Alex Avila all too well. Once bitten, twice shy, I guess.
There's some trouble on the horizon as far as prospects go, as well. Casey Crosby got shut down early this season with more forearm trouble, and Ryan Strieby's wrist still isn't right from getting plunked in 2009. Brennan Boesch needs to make an adjustment at the plate, and I suspect that Austin Jackson will need to do so as well come next spring.
The Jackson/Coke/Scherzer trade was likely the best trade in baseball this season. Dombrowski went in and stole the nipples right off the tits of two teams there. We found another ace, our starting CF, a set-up man, and maybe another one if Schlereth can figure out a way to find the strike zone without the use of Google.
There's still a lot of work to be done. We need a catcher, a big bat for the left side of the infield, and another arm in the rotation. The good news is, Dombrowski should have the flexibility to make the necessary moves.
