Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

Yeah, but when you hit .400 3 times, there's not a lot of room in there for strikeouts.

Baseball Reference only tracked Cobb's strikeout totals starting in 1913 (he was a rookie in 1905), and they only have him for 357 K's in his career. That true number is probably somewhere around 500.

The only time Kaline struck out more than 70 times in a year was 1974, his final year. His total is 1,020.

Gehringer? He played 19 years and K'd 372 times, and had 7 years where he struck out less than 20 times for the whole season. Brandon Inge calls that a good June.

CABRERA!!!

5-1, bottom 7.

So Cabrera homers in what is likely his final AB this season in Comerica. I'd really like to see him get to 40.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

All right. One week to go. We're out of it, but there's 7 games left on the schedule with Baltimore and Cleveland. There's still a few things to watch for

1) Cabrera has 38 homers and is heading to two homer-friendly ballparks. If he gets to 40, he becomes the first Tiger to hit 40 bombs since Cecil Fielder in 1991.

2) Justin Verlander has 18 wins. He'll start on Wednesday. If he wins, it's not completely out of the question to see him go on short rest on Sunday to get a shot at 20. The last Tiger to win 20: Bill Gullickson in 1991.

3) Austin Jackson's average has dipped under .300. Can he top off a likely ROY campaign by pushing that number back over .300?

4) The Tigers have 80 wins. It's not completely unreasonable to think they can get to 84-85 wins. I think I said 80-82 wins in March.

52 home wins. Too bad they played on the road like the Baltimore Orioles, or this might have been an interesting September.

Galarraga gets shelled by the Tribe and Cabrera blows an ankle and could be done for the year. Great night in Cleveland.

1) Well, the ankle thing may have killed that. But he has got to be a leader for league MVP.

2) Thinking the same thing although the team and Verlander have a tough time winning in either Cleveland or Baltimore.

3) I was wrong about this kid. If he isn't ROTY then there really is an East Coast bias.

4) Six games left, and they are playing them like exhibition games, much like the past five or six games. At this point, 80-86 wins doesn't much matter, except earning you a pitcher of suds. I think catching Chicago is done, and just staying focused in order to avoid injury will be a task.

One additional point: Rod was very careful not to mention that Laird will probably not be back when Mario prodded him about it- but alluded to Damon and Bonderman. The "back injury thing" and "not having the offensive season he was hoping for" was enough of a hint... that and throwing out 30% of his runners, down from his average. IIRC, Rod stayed on the fence by saying "I'm not touchin' that one". Smart, considering that there is garbage out there for FA catchers.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

X-rays on Cabrera's ankle were negative. It's just a sprain. Probably ends his year, but who cares, at this point as long as there's no long-term damage. It does kind of suck because he was one intentional walk shy of tying the AL record, but oh well.

The Tigers have pretty much said no chance Verlander starts on short rest for a chance at a 20th win.

Gage, Henning and some other guy's double talk about next season.

1. All agree that Laird is gone, Avila will be #1 and it will be difficult finding an adequate backup.

2. Inge is 50-50 as is Bonderman. Gallaraga could be dangled as trade bait.

3. Peralta is probably going to be the starting SS.

4. Ordonez is going to want the big $$ option to come back and the Tigers may let him walk.

5. Guillen may as well leave his glove at home next season. Sizemore and Rhymes will platoon at 2b.

6. Damon is probably moving on. Raburn needs to be given a full time shot, and Wells/ Boesch need to have a few issues straightened out.

7. Coke is being discussed as a potential starter, as is Andy Oliver. Either way, the Tigers hopes rest with Verlander, Sherzer and Porcello. The Bullpen will need Zoom-zoom, Miner and Seay to come back and help Perry and Valverde.

8. Jackson and Cabrera should take home hardware.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

And they got rained out today.

The 3rd guy is Tony Paul. He's okay. Nothing less, nothing more. Mediocre writer, but better than Henning. A bit of a boob.

1) I agree. At least he better be.

2) Okay, but I have no idea what they think the Tigers will get for Galarraga.

3) I'm not sure. They're going to need to spend big for either a SS or 3B. Peralta-Inge should NOT be the answer to the left side of the infield in 2011.

4) I don't think Magglio is going to be quite as expensive as people think. I'm thinking somewhere around $8 mil, maybe a bit north of that. We can't let him walk unless the demands are completely unreasonable. We're short enough of bats as it is. We're not in a position to be letting one walk out the door.

5) So then we're going two years straight with no Plan B at 2B. This is a mistake. I'm not sold on Sizemore. At all.

6) I'm not willing to give Raburn a full-time shot. This guy has a Tony Clark bat, in that it doesn't heat up until mid-July. He can't be hitting .210 on Flag Day and have any hope of playing everyday. Someone also needs to tell him not to take the roller skates onto the field. Between Wells and Boesch, I would think that one of the two is going to grab one of the starting spots and act like they've earned it.

7) Oliver is a better bet for the rotation. Making Coke a starter is really putting a bigger dent in the bullpen than the one they're fixing in the rotation. Ryan Perry needs to develop control quick, fast, and in a hurry.

8) I agree that they should, but I've got the feeling that we're going to get stoned here on both counts.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

From Tom Gage's column in the Detroit News:

Verlander leads the majors in pitches thrown this season with 3,746 in 33 starts, an average of 113.5.

Last year he led the way, too, with 3,937 in 35 starts, an average of 112.5.

I was wrong on this one, although I think we can still get more out of Verlander. I expected him to take a step back this season, and all he did was go 18-10. I'm not looking at the rest of the stats at the moment.

True DH today against Baltimore. King Jeremy makes his final start of the season (and maybe as a Tiger), then Porcello makes his last start of 2010.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

And King Jeremy the Roundhead gets bombed like Beirut, giving up 9 earned while getting only 13 outs. A 5.53 ERA to finish the season. If this was his last start as a Tiger, goodbye and good riddance. This village can say goodbye to its idiot.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

And that makes it two DH's dropped in three days. Lose twice more and end up below .500. Losing to Cleveland and Baltimore to boot.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

And apparently Phil Coke is moving into the rotation for 2011, and he's starting today.

I don't think I like it.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

Bonderman, Gump and Damon are gone

Good, hallelujah, and fine, I guess. Magg's option won't be picked up, but they're open to his return.

Also, they want both Inge and Peralta back next season. Uh-oh.....

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

For the last time in 2010:

<a href='http://cheezburger.com/View/3461808384' ><img src='http://images.cheezburger.com/completestore/2010/4/26/129168105842513119.jpg' alt='funny pictures' /></a>

4-2 final to finish 81-81.

Final grades tonight.

Yep, that was me on April 1st. Too bad I don't gamble with money.

Plus they are looking for a big LH bat. Doesn't sound like a vote of confidence for Boesch. Rayburn, Jackson & ?? in the outfield next season. Cabrera, Ryhmes/Sizemore/Guillen at 2b, you know whos at SS and 3b. Avila and ? behind the plate.

Yeah, sounds like another 80 win or less season.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

I'll hold out hope that Inge/Peralta are an insurance policy in case they can't work out a deal for a bigger name on the left side of the infield. They're in a slightly better negotiating position for a trade if their Plan B at least includes guys with major league experience.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

We've been looking for a big LH bat for 10 years and counting.

I was being positive for the 2010 season, operating under the assumption that this was to be a building block/retrenchment for 2011 and 2012. I was also under the assumption that given the substantial money coming off the books, at least some of it would be used to sign major free agents to bring in significant upgrades, now that we know that there are no immediate replacements at SS and 3B in the farm system. Wade Gaynor, the 3B in A-ball, is likely roughly 3 years away. It turns out that there are no shortstops in the immediate future that have some serious pop in the bat, either.

We need bats. We need bats now. "Bats", as in, "more than one". I think we need two more in addition to what we do with Magglio (and I don't have a good feeling about this, either).

Sure, it's extremely early, two days after the season is over, but I've got some concerns.
