Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

Checking the comments, apparently they had versions of him ripping up the other team's logo as well.

Not apparently, they did. Also, Marathon put out glasses with said logo of Tiger with various other team logos in his mouth. Too bad mine all got busted.

:(

I don't think I could have read anything worse on the internet today.

We've lost George Kell, Ernie, and now Sparky is in real trouble. That better be our 3 for a while.

BTW, I had to put that in the MLB thread, too.

Sparky is gone. :(

Very, very sad. Sparky was the manager of my Reds when I was growing up. And you know the tie between you and your childhood team. Those Big Red Machine teams from the 70's were awesome. And then for him to move to my family's other team, and win there- he was a great man.

:(

I had a feeling that it was going to happen soon, but I didn't expect it to happen quite this quickly. Usually when by the time something like this gets to the media it's much further along than anyone lets on. I figured it wasn't going to be long, just by reading what was coming out of the Detroit News last night, and reading between the lines.

*Nods and smiles, sadly*

I started watching baseball in late 1981, so I don't have any personal memories of the great Red teams. But that 1984 team was (and always will be) my team. In my eyes that team was unbeatable.

Terrible news. RIP Sparky. :(

We all have fond baseball memories.... mine of two world championships ('68 &'84)- where I can hardly remember the one as a young child and cherish the other while as a college student. To top that year off, my son was born today (26), just a couple weeks after winning in 1984. Sparky was colorful and controversial- especially his managing style- but his boys played hard. Another pillar from the great history of our franchise is sadly gone. God rest you now, and your putter, too Sparky. Or, as Al Ackerman used to say, Bless You Boys, and Skip too.

Sparky will be missed. He was one of the good guys in the game. Thanks everything you did for Baseball Sparky.

The '75 World Series is arguably the greatest of all the Fall Classics. My memories of Sparky go back to when he played the middle infield for the Triple-A Toronto Maple Leafs at Maple Leaf Stadium at the foot of Bathurst St. -- just a few blocks west of the Rogers Center.

Rest in Peace Sparky.

Any word yet on a memorial service for Sparky yet? It would be cool to get a chance to pay our respects to him like we got to for Ernie.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010, Part 2: Wanted: Hitting. Gerald Laird need not apply

Sparky had requested that there be no funeral services, and no memorials.

:( Sad.... so sad... What a gentleman. And a gentle man. Pro sports are so full of people at all levels of the game (front office, coaches and managers and, of course, players) who make sure we know they're bigger than the game. In all the years he was in the public light, this was never, ever George "Sparky" Anderson. This seems so sudden, too soon, and hard to believe.

One of my favorite Sparky moments is October 14th 1984. Gossage on the mound, Gibson at the plate, and the conference on the mound. Dick Williams wants him walked, but Gossage thinks he can strike him out (not that at the time I knew what the conversation was). But the cameras pan to Sparky and he tells Gibby "They don't wanna walk you. They don't wanna walk you." You can read his lips as plain as the white hair on his head. Then he puts his fists together, mimicking holding a bat and says softly, "you know what to do," and gives that little tilt of his head and that sly smile. First pitch comes in off the plate, and it looks like maybe Gossage is just going to pitch around him. Uhh, no. Next pitch comes in as fat as a Thanksgiving turkey and Gibby launches that puppy half way back to San Diego. 10 minutes later Larry Herndon grabs a young Tony Gwynn's fly ball and the Tigers celebrate.

Rest easy Sparky...

They got rid of both Bonine and Dlugach. I don't think they lost anything there at all.

Jhonny Peralta: 2 years, $11.25 mil. :-/

Let me know when the big bats get here.

Hi, there.

Lost in the shuffle this weekend, the Marlins traded both Cameron Maybin (Padres) and Andrew Miller (Red Sox). That means that the only thing the Marlins still have to show for sending us Miguel Cabrera is Burke Badenhop. Even with the money that wound up in Dontrelle Willis's bank account, I still think we, uhhh, did okay in this trade.

Now maybe we can fleece them out of Dan Uggla..............
