Re: Detroit Lions 2011: If I slip and fall, I can Suh and get a Fairley large settle
I think it's a myth that you can't get an impact player outside the top ten. Teams like the Packers have been finding those players for years. It might be more difficult, but I think the Lions staff puts them at a good draft day advantage.
Comparing the Packers organization to the Lions organization. Elizabeth, I'm comin', it's the big one {clutches chest}.
I suppose it is possible, but outside of Pittsburgh, New England and Green Bay, 26 other clubs have yet to do it consistently. SF may be the closest thing to doing that, now.
The Lions need IMPACT players at key positions to get to the next level. Not projects. A cornerstone OT. A stud cornerback. Running back situation may be an area that they are content with in getting Lesheur back and/or Best back healthy. I'm sure the Lions will try to get the best possible set of players available.
As far as this season, their play has regressed, IMO. The defense, as mentioned is a sieve stopping the run, had little success getting pressure until late in the game (I don't think Cunningham had the benefit of being able to blitz much) and is patchwork in the secondary. They are undisciplined.
The offense has no running game, although arguments are being made that this is a "passing league" and that this aspect isn't as important, unless of course you can't get a half a yard in two plays running against the strength of your opponent. The passing game is solid with good talent- providing they catch the ball.
Special teams are not special, but have not hurt them.
You look at other teams they have played in the NFC and they have improved: SF is a legit threat to GB and Dallas, Atlanta and NO are on par or better than Detroit. Even Arizona and Seattle would give the Lions fits right now.
In other words, I think the Lions overachieved this season and it will slightly hamper their draft status. That's all. To think they will make noise in the playoffs (and thus justify their season) isn't realistic. It's not like they are going to be allowed to come back from a double digit deficit against better teams in the playoffs. They did that four times this season against teams that are either fighting to make the playoffs or are lousy.
They could still finish 9-7, one game over where I thought they would, though. The San Diego game is huge in that regard- 10 wins could change their positioning dramatically.
