Denver Pioneers visit the MN Golden Gophers Oct 23-24

Re: Denver Pioneers visit the MN Golden Gophers Oct 23-24

Glad we have one retarded UND fan on this board to make make me feel better. Yeah, Kangas probably should have made the save on that 2nd goal, but tonight was NOT his fault. Our offense sucked again. I have never seen a team miss the net so much on shots (hit the net for Christ sakes). From the performance I saw tonight, if I were Gwoz, I'd keep Cheverie in for the sweep.

Retarded? Cause I said something that was 1. Right. 2. Against the Gophers? I see. I guess taht makes sense.

Re: Denver Pioneers visit the MN Golden Gophers Oct 23-24

I have nothing against Kangas, except I don't think he is good. And people ar so quick to let goalies off the hook. Look, if there is a shot that goes in the net that a goalie should have had, its his fault. And if it happens a few times, against a good team, and your team loses, the goalie is to blame.

How many goals have the Gophers scored while Kangas was in net? How many? Two games so far, how many have they scored?

Holy relax. Are you related to the guy? I didn't blame the entire thing on him. All I said was he should have the goals that went in. If you read back, i also said their offense is **** and their best player isn't even noticeable on the ice.

Sorry dude, I agree that was a little harsh. My apologies. You're not retarded. I'm just frustrated the Gophers have sucked this year. But you're wrong that our problem is the goaltending- our goaltending is the LEAST of our concerns.

Re: Denver Pioneers visit the MN Golden Gophers Oct 23-24

On post game show with Jay Stickney, Gwoz said that Brookwell is now the 7th d-man. Hmmmmmmm.
I bet when DU plays UND, Brookwell will be in there.

On the big ice DU's young freshmen look sensational because they can skate & puckhandle. But when things get rough and tough against Sconnie, UAA & UND, Brookwell will come in handy.

Congrats on a big win tonight dggoddard. Your team certainly deserved it. I know that has nothing to do with your post, but your team deserves the credit. Cheverie is fantastic. I kept telling my friends that. ****it he's good.

Re: Denver Pioneers visit the MN Golden Gophers Oct 23-24

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'll be urined off if Gwoz starts the sieve tomorrow night.

14er--I flippin hear ya buddy. Chevy has 64 saves in his last six periods and has thrown up two goose eggs and I bet you anything George goes with Murray.
I'm amazed. Nice effort tonight.

Re: Denver Pioneers visit the MN Golden Gophers Oct 23-24

I think them missing the net so much kind of goes back to the bigger issue of having too many skilled players and not really working as a team. You've got guys coming down on the goalie at a bad angle, thinking they can pick corners that aren't there, and they end up putting the puck off the glass and practically out of the zone. If you don't have a good shot, shoot low at the goalie's far pad, and a lot of time they kick the rebound straight up the slot towards a trailer. On shots from the point, it looks like the D are trying to shoot the puck wide and have the guy in front redirect the puck around the goalie. They've got to cut that crap out, get the puck on net, and try to get some garbage goals off of rebounds.

I think you're right on this one. We have a lot of individual players, and no team. They didn't look quite as bad as last Friday, but we still missed a ton of passes and never seemed to crash the net when we had an opportunity. Lucia keeps juggling the lines ... I'm not sure if that's part of the problem or not, but we need to find something that works quickly.

Also, I have a new pet peeve - I don't want to see David Fischer carrying the puck for more than 5 seconds at a time. Seriously, he is just not a good puck-handler. And, I never thought I'd say this, but, Wehrs actually looked a little better tonight than I expected. He seemed to make so many errors last season, but maybe he learned something over the summer.

Is it too soon to say that Schroeder is entering a bona fide sophomore slump?

Re: Denver Pioneers visit the MN Golden Gophers Oct 23-24

If Kangas stops the second goal like he should, the Gophers still lose the game. Their offense generated 3-4 flurries against Denver, but they couldn't sustain any pressure to speak of, nor could they get to any rebounds.

This team looks like it is every bit as bad offensively as it was two seasons ago when they averaged a little over 2 goals per game. It'll be a minor miracle if the Gophers manage to finish in the top half of the league.

If it plays out this way, Lucia should step down at season's end. He clearly doesn't have it anymore.

Re: Denver Pioneers visit the MN Golden Gophers Oct 23-24

Like I said - think two seasons ago on offense - 2 goals per game and struggling to win every game 2-1 or 1-0.

Re: Denver Pioneers visit the MN Golden Gophers Oct 23-24

DU lived up to the preseason hype last night. I'm speaking from limited knowledge here, but the Rakhshani/Ruegsegger/Maiani line seems like it could be the best in college hockey. IMO Matt Donovan (frosh?) is going to be a premier defenseman.

DU played solid D, the offense moved the puck well in transition, created good scoring chances, Cheverie was solid and with the shutout (.93+ SV% ), Gwoz should start him on Sat. Although as a disappointed Gopher fan, I'll take the rotation right now.:)

“Our team D stepped up. Every game they have gotten better,” commented Cheverie. “When they got [pucks] through there was not traffic out front.”

On the other hand, the Gophers were impotent on offense and the PP (0-3, 0-12 overall) generated a total of 3 shots, C'mon man! There was a little pressure, but for the most part they did not consistently storm the net or get bodies in front. Just like last year, they missed the net on key scoring chances. Ridiculous.

The shutouts and being outshot 3 games in a row are very troublesome stats. I don't think goaltending is the problem.

Even though they played a good DU team, my positive illusions of this team are fading, and things are looking a lot like last year...worse with this start. So the million dollar question is, if it's scoring by committee this season, when will the committee show up?

If it plays out this way, Lucia should step down at season's end. He clearly doesn't have it anymore.

I'm going to agree with you here. I'm not sure it would happen though, as the protocol in college hockey is a little different than the pros. My guess is the clamoring for Lucia to step down after this season will haunt him in the offseason if they miss the NCAAs again.

Like I said - think two seasons ago on offense - 2 goals per game and struggling to win every game 2-1 or 1-0.

After Okposo left the GPG hit the floor. But in the end the GF and GA were even and they did have a good run at the end in the F5 and made the NCAAs. This team seems very troublesome now. However, since it's still early in the season let's see what happens.

Nice post. Thanks on behalf of Pioneer Nation.

DU's assistant coaches did a great job of preparing the team this week. Gwoz missed three or four days of practice, but DU looked more prepared than ever for the task at hand. Great team defense.

Chevy grew up playing youth hockey with Sidney Crosby in Nova Scotia, so that explains the great glovework.

The plan was for Chevy to go to Shattuck with Crosby, and if he had, he might have ended up a Gopher.

I thought that DU carried the play, especially in the first period, where they could've had three or four goals. Kangas is playing really well, but not getting any goal support. Minnesota's intensity has got to get better for Friday night games.

Re: Denver Pioneers visit the MN Golden Gophers Oct 23-24

Good game by both teams. Looks like Denver is going to be tough this year, it will take a total team effort and a hot goaltender (see OSU last week). Although I thought both teams look like contenders it seemed that Denver controlled more of the game last night.

Re: Denver Pioneers visit the MN Golden Gophers Oct 23-24

The Gophers plain got out muscled and out hustled by D.U. last night!! The MN p.p. is horrible to watch. Lost almost every battle against the wall and no one sits in front of the net. Put Budish on the p.p. at least the kid can score in front of the net and win a few battles against the rail. Three games, it's to early to count our boys out!! Schroeder misses Sota.

Re: Denver Pioneers visit the MN Golden Gophers Oct 23-24

Jess Myers wrote a game recap for the Denver Post. (see link below) The goalie for tonight's second game for DU will be decided sometime later today.

Gwozdecky, who has rotated Cheverie and freshman Adam Murray in goal, said tonight's starter would be decided closer to game time.
