Denver at St. Cloud Friday, 2/7/14

Re: Denver at St. Cloud Friday, 2/7/14

There's still hope for Denver. My people have a call in to Pierre de Coubertin.

Look up a list of the IOC sometime. Lots of Barons, Earls, Counts, Field Marshalls and so on. Those folks have long memories. After all, the only responsibilities the IOC has are: the program, making sure the medals are up to snuff, eligibility (not that big a deal these days) and where the games are to be contested. The most valuable thing they have is awarding the games to a city. And I'd imagine the long memories on the Committee will work against Denver long after the people involved have shuffled off this mortal coil. We could possibly influence the 3rd World members with sufficiently gaudy bribes (Mitt Romney might have some suggestions) but my guess is Denver/Colorado are on permanent double secret probation.

While playing seven out of eight games on the road is a brutal stretch of the schedule there is this: only one of the teams Denver will face [Saint Cloud] is currently above the Pios in the standings. As of the current standings Denver will be playing six of the eight games against teams tied or below it in the conference and won't have to go to North Dakota. All is not lost.

5'7", 168 lb. VanVoorhis paired with 6 '2, 215-230 lbs. of muscle Didier reminds me of Salazar and Colborne playing togethher--Salazar scores and has to leap a foot off the ice to high 5 Jumbo Joe--what a pair!

Memories of Johnny Mac and the Bookends.

All true. We were all just so shaken by the bad start. Our confidence hasn't recovered. It was oogly. And we're just not sure who the "real" Pioneers are.

I think it will be difficult for DU to get in the tourney via the PWR. They had some bad losses to crappy OOC teams which really hurts. In addition, the NCHC as a league did not do well in OOC games and has kept most below the line to make the NCAAS. I think there best way to get to the NCAAs is by winning the NCHC tourney and get the autobid.

Re: Denver at St. Cloud Friday, 2/7/14

Olympic sports associations are unlike anything else in the world. For many years the head of the International Hockey Federation was "Bunny" Ahearn, from hockey mad Great Britain. Go figure.

You forgot to mention most of the old guys, and that is quite a few, have died since Denver turned down the Olympics in the late 60s. And if any are left they probably have "old timers."
Didn't part of the plan have Evergreen turned into a parking lot?;)

Wasn't it in '74 when they turned it down after being awarded them before the '72 games.

2nd underway

+1
Even our OOC wins were against crappy teams.

Miami just scored 4-2 WMU 4 min left.

Great moment at the opening ceremonies: Cossacks slaughtering the Jews of Anatevka.

I absolutely agree. Frankly I think the NCHC will get one team in the tourney and that will be the post-season tourney winner.

Yeah. Denver was supposed to host in '76 after Sapporo in '72. I have some material from Sapporo talking about the "5,000 seat hockey arena" on the DU campus. Even though it was supposed to be bare bones, you know how they throw money around. Surely there would have been some significant improvements to the old barn. Another missed opportunity. Olympic village: Halls and Towers.

Double secret probation. So you're saying there's a chance?:D

Re: Denver at St. Cloud Friday, 2/7/14

Think you're right, that decade was sort of a blur:o:D

The snowboarders would like the games in Colorado with weed legal now. Putin's gorillas are probably providing them with their smoke at very exorbitant prices in Sochi.

Very, very slim, IMO. They definitely love having the games in the US because of the live coverage and MONEY. And potentially MONEY could cause them to give us a second chance. It'll be a tough sell. How do the people behind a future Denver/Colorado bid answer the question: "How do we know you won't fcuk us again?"

Re: Denver at St. Cloud Friday, 2/7/14

I'm going for 2. Would not be surprised if regular season leader did not win tourney.

I don't think there'll be two teams with high enough PWR to make the tourney. The conference has had an unimpressive debut thus far. My $.02.
