Debunking the Myth – Who you play has a huge impact on attendance

Looks like somebody is a day early in the whole 4/20 thing. :)

Re: Debunking the Myth – Who you play has a huge impact on attendance

UND has sold out games against lesser knowns UManitoba, Cornell, Harvard, RMU and Canisus at the REA in the past. There is not a lot to do on a cold winters night in Grand Forks, ND.

Exactly.
ND fan#1: "So do we go see the hockey game or go drink next to the tree tonight?"
ND fan #2: "Why choose? Go to the game then afterwards go drink next to the tree!"

:D

You can't expect the people partaking in the 4/20 thing to actually know what day it is. :D

Re: Debunking the Myth – Who you play has a huge impact on attendance

-The seventh and eighth schools were only invited because the other six wanted to have a pair of whipping boys so the teams didn't just play .500 hockey and hurt their PWR. Because the seventh and eighth teams have ONE NCAA tournament win in their combined history.
They were invited because the league needed 28 conference games. What held up their invites was Notre Dame's negotiating tactics.

I believe the NCHC is going to have 24 conference games, correct?

Excuse me 24. The coaches don't want 28 because they feel it will be too brutal. The problem is finding the Non-conference opponents.

Sacred Heart, American Int'l, Canisius, Saint Mary's School for the Blind (err, Notre Dame), Pick a B1G school.

Hey look, I have your non-conference slate filled out for the next decade. :p

So a tougher Non-Conference schedule than the nWCHA Conference schedule.

Nice to see that you're off your meds again d-nozzle.

If you'd simply taken the time to read the thread then you MIGHT (I'm being optimistic here) have noticed that your comment was fully redundant.

Yes, but fans know that the remainder of the games area gainst higher quality opponents. I know I wouldn't be pysched about season tickets if the typical game was against lesser knowns.

It's interesting to get the coaches take from someone in the know. Thanks again for nothing, pervert. :(

Re: Debunking the Myth – Who you play has a huge impact on attendance

No, the NCHC was founded because:
-Five schools felt that they shouldn't have to fly into Green Bay and bus the four hours North to Houghton
-Five schools felt they were "bankrolling" the "lesser" schools by participating in the league championship when the "lesser" schools repeatedly missed out.
-Five schools felt using the B1G conference as a scapegoat would cover their true intent.
-The sixth school came along because it didn't want to be the flag bearer for a "much weakened" conference when Notre Dame left for wherever their dart landed.
-The seventh and eighth schools were only invited because the other six wanted to have a pair of whipping boys so the teams didn't just play .500 hockey and hurt their PWR. Because the seventh and eighth teams have ONE NCAA tournament win in their combined history.

I know. You wouldn't believe the time I've spent going through the archives of this site for the 2002-2005 era to find out from WCHA fans at that time what I'm supposed to say when my team sucks balls but the conference they're in is good.

I tried using Mississippi State and Ole Miss football because it was easier to find but all they do is ring cowbells and chant "SEC! SEC!'. Was hoping for something deeper. Mississippi, I know.

Pointless. Damien typically just makes ridiculous assertions and is incapable of defending them.
Funny how DU's Athletic Director mentioned in a newspaper article today...

http://www.duclarion.com/sports/bri...er-athletics-1.2857920?pagereq=2#.T5dPuo6zhxs

“The formation of the NCHC was for hockey programs that had a vision and a commitment to national success,” said Bradley-Doppes. “It is a tremendous hockey conference, a tough one, but it’s wonderful for our coaches, recruits and certainly fans. We have a fierce rivalry with Colorado College and North Dakota, and they’re in the NCHC with us. But I also expect new rivalries to develop.”

Similar to the other athletic programs, Bradley-Doppes said the geographic range of the WCHA members led to a lack of name recognition with the opponents, who are as far away as Alaska.

Re: Debunking the Myth – Who you play has a huge impact on attendance

Bradley-Doppes said the geographic range of the WCHA members led to a lack of name recognition with the opponents, who are as far away as Alaska.

...And now you have Western Michigan and Miami (who you always have to mention is actually from OH, not FL) right in your "backyard" which should help name recognition. So The Broncos motto goes from "Why Western?" to "Who's Western?"
Like a record player - that's all spin from an AD who had a lot of damage control to do with other WCHA members.

Most real hockey fans at least know the location of the teams in their conference. I would be willing to bet most real college fans could tell you the conference and hometown of at least 30 teams (if not all 58), much less their own conference. But if you have to dumb it down for them... so be it. Those are the same folks who grab the corporate tickets for NHL games. They can't tell you who their leading scorer is, but they can tell you the name of the hot chick to tends the martini bar in the club level because that's where they spend most of the game.

The article also states "[Hockey]’s the hottest ticket in town. But it’s difficult with hockey because of the Friday and Saturday back-to-back."
Wow, well it's good that in the new conference the games will mostly be played on.... wait Friday and Saturday still?
Oh I can hear it now... "We're too tired to come back two days in a row.... We'll just stay home. Besides we're playing that CC Tigers team and I have no idea where they are from anyway..."

Cos the woman who basically bailed from the decision process by giving Gwoz the reins (1st pretend NHL GM in college hockey!!!) said something about hockey and conferences then it's reality?

Learn something everyday.

Re: Debunking the Myth – Who you play has a huge impact on attendance

Not only has Denver's population doubled or tripled in the past 20 years, but the population had probably turned over four or five times. Lots of people have moved away or been relocated and replaced by even more people moving in.

So the challanges that face DU in a rapidly growing Sunbelt city with massive population turnover are different than those schools who's populations are stagnant or declining.
