Re: Deadliest Catch: Season 6

Not fun stuff.

I was surprised how calm Josh was under pressure, I can only imagine what he was going through. I think he has the makings of a future captain.

I am sure he has been making plans for this for a while...his dad has been sick forever and when he decided to come back they had to have a plan in place for what would happen if he died during the season.

And I dont think Jake's revelation had anything to do with it though my guess is he and his addiction wont see it that way. That kid is going to be messed up for a while.

Re: Deadliest Catch: Season 6

A friend of mine brought up a good question.

With the death of Phil, the Hillstrands retiring, Sig and Edgar likely not having too many years left, and the fact they never have any other boats on the show longer than 1 season....will Deadliest Catch be ending soon? My friend says she wouldn't be surprised if they didn't bring it back next year. I think it will be back but I too wouldn't be surprised to see it start to fall off without familiar faces. I think it will be back at least one season just to see how the Cornelia Marie handles a new season without Phil around.

Re: Deadliest Catch: Season 6

I think we'll see one more year, maybe two max. Yes, there are going to be new faces, but for the moment that makes for new stories.

Re: Deadliest Catch: Season 6

I know for a lot of us that have watched the show from the inception, it's going to be tough without the Hillstrands, Phil, and maybe Sig. I mean, yeah, obviously, you can evolve the show and show new faces and whatnot, but I'm not sure the hardcore fans of the show want it that way.

Re: Deadliest Catch: Season 6

Yeah I see 2 more seasons. One in which we see the changing of the guard for the Cornelia Marie and Time Bandit. People are going to want to see that. Then I think next season is proabbly Sig and Edgars last if they don't decide to hang it up before then. So then they go one more season with new captains and maybe new boats and decide to end it when the ratings don't stay as high as they would hope.

So basically I agree with you Sloe Gin. Its all about those guys (and I suppose Kieth on the Wizard although he is not as poular I think). Phil and Sig are the real centers of the show. If both are gone the show should end.

Re: Deadliest Catch: Season 6

I bet one of the Hillstrands sticks around for another year, most likely Andy...that way they can make sure everything is set for the total retirement.

I think if Josh took over the CM people would watch that since he is Phil's kid and he has a pretty cool personality.

That said 2 years sounds about right, and that is a heckuva nice run.

They haven't really mixed in any new group successfully... each of these boats had their share of sympathetic characters and guys you could identify... and those boats that didn't tend to stick around didn't.

Would have liked to see more out of "wild bill" but it looks like he had a combo of snake bite and the dialed in drama of the other mainstay boats on the program.

The show will go as long as people have interest but losing some of the bigger boats closes some chapters so it won't feel the same. Lets see what happens with the Cornelia Marie.... I agree with Handy... I don't think the Hillstrands are calling it a day... Andy isn't really that old he just might have other interests and there's the issue of wanting to hand off to John's son.

edit: as for the Cornelia boat... i think almost anything can happen and I THINK I read that freddy retired... everything related to that boat could just flat out change including entire crews and captains. In the end its a business. The boys may not be old enough to step up and being the co-owner of a boat for which you're operating on the deck isn't going to happen.

Yeah I could see Andy staying around for another season but not more. As for the Harris boys...well they are what mid 20s at least? Some of the other captains were captaining at that age. I think if they had someone there to mentor them a bit they could be fine...or rather Josh could be fine. I'm not sold on Jake being a captain. Maybe they look into bringing back that guy who took over back when Phil had to leave after the clot? He has experience and might be the right kind of guy to look out for the Harris boys and maybe start transitioning them into captaincy. But like you say...who knows what will happen.

Re: Deadliest Catch: Season 6

You mean Murray? When he took over they pretty much failed IIRC. The engineer they have now though would probably be a good mentor and could be the guy to watch Josh's back.

The way Josh took charge right away and was willing to set up everything just minutes after realizing his dad had a stroke tells me that not only has he been working on this plan for a while, but that whatever measures they take for next year have been in the works for a while. I mean he was acting like a leader, ignoring whatever emotions he was feeling and pushing to get the boat back out. With Jake's issues, and really no one on the boat ready to take over like on the TB I think you will see him in charge of one of the seasons next year. We will see what he does the rest of Opie Season, if he does what Phil told him he needs to do (learn all the different facets of the boat, how to run it and how to lead the men) then I think in two years the boat is his.

Did anyone watch After the Catch? They had the two Jakes on talking about when they switched boats. Jake Harris looked pretty good I wonder if he is clean for now. Jake Anderson was talked up pretty hardcore...Sig said if he had a son he would want Jake. Since his bro probably will never captain and since Jake now is getting his various licenses and is really going full bore into learning the ins and outs of the boat that Jake is the obvious successor down the line which is kind of cool.

It's always tough to tell since the editing leans more towards drama than documentary. They showed Murray catch about 7 crab all season, and then in the last episode, it was "Yep, we got our quota," and their numbers didn't seem out of line with anyone else.

I thought I heard something on one of the shows that implied Murray used to do it (maybe back in the derby days)... something about "nice to be back in the seat"... I found it odd on a crab boat cramped for space he just happened to have a chair ready to go for him.

I mean, repeatedly they talked about how much you need to know the boat. I'm surely not saying they couldn't do it at some point... but that's the learning process... could he do it now... or does he need more time?

----

Jake Anderson looks like he's taken to it hardcore... he always seemed distant and aloof to me... I don't think I have ever seen him more determined and confident than he was at that "After the Catch" table... it was like "woah, where'd he come from?" Maybe more of what we don't see.

I don't see Sig going anywhere. He'll run the Northwestern until the day he dies. Edgar may leave, but Sig will be there forever. Sig is only 44, although looks quite a bit older.

Did I miss the part where Jonathan offically retired? It seemed like he just decided to cut his opie season a little short being he doesn't do anything anyway. It seemed to me, the the conversation with Fourtner was a in case something happens kind of deal or possibly to run the boat some of the time. People forget that these boats are in constant motion year around as tenders for smaller boats during other seasons.

Personally, I think it was strictly for TV to create more drama and none of these captains will retire from crab fishing anytime soon.

Andy and Jonathan are keeping their eyes on the advertising dollars. I'm sure they want to be in more than just Geico commercials. By amping up the drama they attract attention to the boat. More screen time = more ad money. How many times did Andy ask Jonathan about his retirement or otherwise prompt him to start a conversation about it? Five? And that's just the ones that made it onto film.

My understanding was that Fourtner was going to captain the last trip so Andy could evaluate him (and light a fire under Junior). I think you're dead on saying that Fourtner will be captaining during the "off-season" while Jonathan and Andy are off doing other things (like appearing in TV commercials).

Re: Deadliest Catch: Season 6

Cant blame Mike for those pots...he didnt choose the spot.

I see after the catch will be focusing on the Wizard and Kieth will be talking about bad greenhorns. Maybe it should be about bad captains/crew who can't pick and/or train good greenhorns. Sig has had 2 greenhorns on this boat since the show started (one the 1st season and then Jake). One did great and got a bonus from the crew, the other is now a permanant crew member. Phil and the Hillstrands have had sucess with new guys. Yet Kieth is always going through greenhorns, sometimes more than one, every season.

Josh having a rough time with this. Trying to decide to stay on the boat or go be with his dad. Rough. Freddie with some sage like advice. Whole crew is taking it hard.

Jake Anderson also having a rough time. Between his missing father and just things not going right for him on the boat.

Josh looks more and more like captain material. It's just a matter of time and seasoning in the wheelhouse.

I see he finally chose to fly into Anchorage.

And WOW Sig is taking it hard....as they all are really...

Yeah Josh has grown by leaps and bounds these past few seasons. Very impressive young man right there.

Re: Deadliest Catch: Season 6

So hard to tell from the preview if next week will be Phil's last. Either way...likely to be another rough emotional episode.

That last 10 minutes of the reaction from all the other boats was just amazing and so real and heart touching, any other show that calls itself reality after that should be ashamed of themselves.
