DEAD!! All right, who died now?

Re: DEAD!! All right, who died now?

Me 3. I remember the Cuban Missile Crisis and my Dad on the front porch, in uniform (along with most of the neighborhood) when the breakers tripped a huge portion of the Northeast. On the other hand they seem to also have some good things including medical schools. I initially thought I wouldn't celebrate anyone's death but then when I was honest with myself there are a few polititians I would breath a sigh of relief (and yes, :o celebrate) at their demise

When Putin and Netanhayu kick the bucket, I won't be shedding any tears. Same goes for any of the remaining African dictators.

...until they're replaced with even more extreme "leaders", of course. :(

Does anybody else find it ironic that Fidel died on capitalism's greatest holiday, Black Friday?

Not at all, even though it's not a holiday. :)

Though from what I gathered, I thought he died late on the 24th, and it wasn't announced/confirmed until the graveyard hours of the 25th.

The holiday comment was tongue in cheek, clearly. Everything I can find, even Wikipedia, has Friday has the date.

Re: DEAD!! All right, who died now?

I've got to say, the actual celebrating I'm seeing makes me feel uncomfortable. The guy did some really awful things, and I can't really relate, but it's still weird to celebrate a death. Anyone else have issues with this?

not really... the guy killed a lot of people

Re: DEAD!! All right, who died now?

Think of it as a useful character note. People tell us everything about themselves. We only have to listen.

just as we'll ignore the screams of those still imprisoned

edit: tell me more about what you think of the Cuban community in Miami

Re: DEAD!! All right, who died now?

I thought the cheering when we killed bin laden was pretty tasteless as well.

I preferred silent reflection and remembrance rather than glee in the death of another human. Monster or not.

I pretty much went Grumpy Cat, muttered "good" and moved on.

Yeah, you're wrong on that one.

There are some political and celebrity deaths where I have had, or will have no issue with the Bette Davis attitude:

Bette Davis said:
You should never say bad things about the dead, you should only say good. Joan Crawford is dead. Good.

Maybe it was the way people celebrated that made me so disgusted. The Murica-boner chanting and sloppy patriotism in place of something a bit more measured.

The pic of the firefighters with the ticker announcing that Osama was killed probably sums up my feelings on that particular death. Mostly solemn, with just a touch of "dam right."

I can't say that I've ever celebrated certain people's deaths, but I have been happy to see a few of them over the years. Then again, I've never been related to or been the subject of brutal treatment by the goons of a dictator who gave them leave to perform said actions. I can certainly understand those people celebrating.
