D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

This is the preview story...results story yet to be published.

Women hosting No. 1 RIT
JOHN CORYER
PLATTSBURGH — A 9-3-1 overall record and a 7-0-1 mark in ECAC West play isn't bad.

But for the Plattsburgh State women's hockey team, defeating top-ranked RIT this weekend in either game at Stafford Ice Arena would be a needed signature victory for the Cardinals.

"We beat some good teams the first half of the season, but we certainly would have liked to have picked up some wins in the games we lost," Plattsburgh head coach Kevin Houle said. "Heading back into league play after the break, these are huge games for us, playing the No. 1 team in the country. Certainly, any win against them would be a signature win."

The two teams tangle at 7 p.m. tonight and then at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The unbeaten Tigers (14-0, 8-0 ECACW) will provide a major test for the Cardinals.

RIT has an 84-13 scoring edge over its opponents and owns an impressive 4-1 victory over No. 2 Norwich. The Tigers have recorded five shutouts on the season and have held opponents to one goal or less in 11 of their 14 games thus far.

RIT did have a couple of close calls just before the break — a 3-2 victory at Trinity and a 1-0 win at Amherst.

Since returning, the Tigers skated to 4-0 and 4-1 nonconference home wins over Adrian this past weekend.

"RIT comes to play hard in all three zones, and we have to be ready to try and take the games to them," Houle said. "They will come out flying, and we will need to rise to the occasion."

Kolbee McCrea (14-11-25) and Kourtney Kunichika (11-14-25) are tied for the RIT team lead in points. The Tigers have 11 players with 10 points or more.

The goaltending has been shared between Laura Chamberlain (8-0-0, 0.92 GAA) and Ali Binnington (5-0-0, 1.07 GAA.

The Cardinals, who have outgunned their foes by a 59-21 margin, have five shutouts to their credit and have allowed a goal or less in seven games.

Plattsburgh State returned from the break with a 5-2 ECAC West win at Potsdam last Friday afternoon.

The Cardinals' three losses so far have been to teams ranked in the top 10 in Division III — home setbacks to No. 4 Middlebury (4-1) and No. 6 Amherst (3-2) and away vs. No. 2 Norwich (3-2 in overtime).

"We had some good games and some not so good in the first semester," Houle said. "We did end the semester on a strong note with a win over Manhattanville (4-0), but one game back against Potsdam isn't enough of an indication for the second half."

Chelsea VanGlahn (11-6-17) and Teal Gove (7-8-15) are the leading point producers for the Cardinals, who have eight players with 10 or more points. Sydney Aveson (8-2-0, 1.38 gaa) has done the majority of the goaltending.

Last year, all three games between Plattsburgh and RIT were on the Tigers' home ice — 2-2 and 0-0 ties during the regular season and a 2-1 RIT win in the ECAC West championship game.

Following this weekend, the Cardinals still have some very difficult games remaining, including two at ECAC West rival Elmira, which is currently ranked No. 3 in the country, and nonconference games against Norwich and Middlebury.

Here it is...

Cards tie top-ranked RIT
PSU women's hockey team first to take point from Tigers in 1-all draw
JOHN CORYER
PLATTSBURGH — It wasn't the big win the Plattsburgh State women's hockey team was looking for Friday night.

But, it was the next best thing.

The Cardinals skated to a 1-all overtime tie with top-ranked RIT in ECAC West play at the Stafford Ice Arena.

It was the first blemish of the season for the unbeaten Tigers, who are now 14-0-1 overall and 8-0-1 in the ECAC West. The Cardinals, meanwhile, moved to 9-3-2 overall and 7-0-2 in the league.

"It was a very good result against the top-ranked team in the country," Plattsburgh State coach Kevin Houle said. "At times, we carried the play to them and it was an encouraging outcome.

"It showed we can play with them and it means a lot to the girls. Obviously, we would liked to have won the game. But, it was still a good result. Now, we have to do it all over again (today)."

The Cardinals and Tigers conclude their two-game weekend set at 3 p.m. this afternoon at the Stafford Ice Arena.

Plattsburgh State started out quickly Friday night and had some good scoring chances early on.

RIT, however, got on the scoreboard first when defenseman Kristina Moss took a shot from the point that deflected off someone in front past Cardinals' goalie Sydney Aveson and into the net at 12:38.

The Cardinals didn't wait long to get even.

Erika Shaubel got the puck to Teal Gove, who went in on a breakaway to beat RIT goalie Laura Chamberlain at 13:40.

"We did a good job responding to their goal," Houle said. "We had some quality scoring chances before they scored — and having them score like that could have deflated us.

"But, we answered back quickly."

Those would prove to be the only goals scored in the hard-fought contest.

RIT had a couple of back-to-back power plays in the second period and had one of its shots ding off the crossbar.

"I thought we played real well in the first period and half of the second," Houle said. "But, then they turned the tide on us."

Plattsburgh State outshot RIT 10-4 and 10-9, respectively, in the first and second periods before the Tigers held a 7-4 edge in the third as the Cardinals began to have some trouble clicking on passes out of their zone.

Houle took a timeout to get the Cardinals back playing the way they were capable of.

Both teams took one shot on goal in the overtime stanza.

Plattsburgh State held a 25-21 edge in shots on goal, with Aveson stopping 20 of 21 shots for the Cardinals and Chamberlain 24 of 25 for the Tigers.

"This was our best game of the season from start to finish," Houle said. "Aveson was solid in net for us — she made the saves when she had to.

"Both goalies were solid."

Platty beats the Tigers 3-1 on an EN goal.

RITchter scale hits 6.7...

Agree with the Ritchter scale, but it was not an ENG. Goalie made 2 saves and the third Card player put it in! Didn't see any RIT players near the goal at the time.

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

No ENG. Platty gets a legit 3-1 W, and now will mess up the rankings for everyone.

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

Lake Forest over UWRF 4-2
St. Norbert over UWS 1-0

Both would be considered upsets???

ooohhhh...interesting weekend at the Stafford!! First Big Win for the Cards this season...well done!! Cant wait to see the new polls this week!

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

concordia 3 adrian 2 oh well now we know Adrian is not in the mix. They are just another below average team this season. Expected a drop off with the talent they lost but not this. I have seen bad hockey before and believe me this is bad hockey. Dont think I will waste anymore time watching them this year. Have to see if they can regroup next year. overall an embarassing season for the team and school. Better have a strong class come in next year otherwise they are in trouble this group is not gettin it done.

yes they would...Lake Forest over RF bigger than SNC over UWS

UWS looked lethargic at times...i'm guessing the month off came back to bite them with not being in game shape ofr the weekend.

Cardinals get big win over No. 1 RIT
PSU women's hockey team hands No. 1 RIT first loss of the season
JOHN CORYER

PLATTSBURGH — Friday night, the Plattsburgh State women's hockey team put the first blemish on RIT's record.

Saturday afternoon, the Cardinals did one better by handing the top-ranked Tigers their first loss of the season.

Morgan MacInnis scored two goals and Sydney Aveson was outstanding in net as the determined Cardinals skated to a 3-1 ECAC West win at the Stafford Ice Arena.

Plattsburgh State, following up on a 1-all overtime tie the night before, improved to 10-3-2 overall and 8-0-2 in the conference, while RIT dropped to 14-1-1 overall and 8-1-1 in the league.

"It was a big win for us on a national level, but even a greater win for us in the league," Plattsburgh State coach Kevin Houle said. "It was a huge, huge win for our team.

"I couldn't be prouder of the girls and they have every right to feel good about themselves."

The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the first period and then hung on the rest of the way, with the help of Aveson, who stopped 34 of 35 shots.

"This was a huge confidence boost for us — our record doesn't reflect on how good a team we are," Aveson said. "We were on the same page (Saturday) and showed we can do it."

The Cardinals came out strong on Saturday and took the lead at 8:04 of the first when MacInnis scored from in front after taking a pass from Shannon Stewart.

Then, with 1:32 left in the opening period, it was Stewart's turn when she backhanded a shot past RIT goalie Laura Chamberlain from in front, with MacInnis and Teal Gove assisting.

"I felt we played extremely well again at the start of the game and into the second period," Houle said. "I felt we were able to take the game to them."

Perhaps the turning point in the contest came with 16:13 gone in the second period when the Cardinals were whistled for slashing and interference penalties, putting Plattsburgh State down two skaters for a full two minutes.

The Cardinals, however, were able to kill it off.

"We did a great job on the penalty kill," Houle said. "RIT showed their skill and talent moving the puck on the power play.

But, that was the turning point of the game because we killed it off and kept them from taking the momentum."

There were some anxious moments for the Cardinals in the third period, however.

Kristina Moss, who scored RIT's lone goal on Friday night, brought the Tigers to within one when she sent a rocket into the net at 12:32.

Plattsburgh State then had to kill off another penalty that was called with 5:20 left in the third to maintain its lead.

RIT wanted to pull Chamberlain for an extra attacker in the final minute, but was unable to do so as the Cardinals were able to apply some pressure of their own.

With 33 seconds left, Plattsburgh State's MacInnis and Gove had a 2-on-1 down low and MacInnis put in the rebound to add the finishing touch.

The Cardinals ended up with a 40-35 shot advantage, with Chamberlain making 37 stops for the Tigers.

But, Aveson's performance was a key in the Cardinals' win.

"She did a great job," Houle said. "She had a big weekend for us. RIT came out like gang busters in the third period and we were able to hang on."

"I tend to play better when it's more stressful," Aveson said. "But, it makes it easier when your team is playing that well in front of you.

"I like to get a lot shots on goal because it keeps your head in the game. My best save today was when I lost my stick in the second period and had to make a glove save."

Plattsburgh State didn't get any home cooking Saturday as the Cardinals were whistled for six penalties and the Tigers only three.

The Cardinals hit the road this coming weekend for ECAC West games at Oswego on Saturday night at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.

"What happened this weekend will probably put Elmira in first place in the conference," Houle said. "They haven't been beaten and are playing Neumann this weekend.

"But, they haven't played us or RIT yet."

Just like his skating, he needs large print, plenty of room to stop and lots of white space -- can't read it online or he'd have to view it through the glass...
plus he's extra proud and wants to frame it properly at center ice..surprised he didn't make a "banner ad" out of it :-)

Leave him alone GoJ...he's the only fan they have.
Hey I resemble that remark!! Actually, there were more than 1,100 attendees at the two games this past weekend at the Stafford. Just seems nobody follows USCHO.

Hey GoJ...just trying to make your life a little simpler that's all.

...and as for Phil...Huh?? Ne comprendez pas???
