Women hosting No. 1 RIT
JOHN CORYER
PLATTSBURGH — A 9-3-1 overall record and a 7-0-1 mark in ECAC West play isn't bad.
But for the Plattsburgh State women's hockey team, defeating top-ranked RIT this weekend in either game at Stafford Ice Arena would be a needed signature victory for the Cardinals.
"We beat some good teams the first half of the season, but we certainly would have liked to have picked up some wins in the games we lost," Plattsburgh head coach Kevin Houle said. "Heading back into league play after the break, these are huge games for us, playing the No. 1 team in the country. Certainly, any win against them would be a signature win."
The two teams tangle at 7 p.m. tonight and then at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
The unbeaten Tigers (14-0, 8-0 ECACW) will provide a major test for the Cardinals.
RIT has an 84-13 scoring edge over its opponents and owns an impressive 4-1 victory over No. 2 Norwich. The Tigers have recorded five shutouts on the season and have held opponents to one goal or less in 11 of their 14 games thus far.
RIT did have a couple of close calls just before the break — a 3-2 victory at Trinity and a 1-0 win at Amherst.
Since returning, the Tigers skated to 4-0 and 4-1 nonconference home wins over Adrian this past weekend.
"RIT comes to play hard in all three zones, and we have to be ready to try and take the games to them," Houle said. "They will come out flying, and we will need to rise to the occasion."
Kolbee McCrea (14-11-25) and Kourtney Kunichika (11-14-25) are tied for the RIT team lead in points. The Tigers have 11 players with 10 points or more.
The goaltending has been shared between Laura Chamberlain (8-0-0, 0.92 GAA) and Ali Binnington (5-0-0, 1.07 GAA.
The Cardinals, who have outgunned their foes by a 59-21 margin, have five shutouts to their credit and have allowed a goal or less in seven games.
Plattsburgh State returned from the break with a 5-2 ECAC West win at Potsdam last Friday afternoon.
The Cardinals' three losses so far have been to teams ranked in the top 10 in Division III — home setbacks to No. 4 Middlebury (4-1) and No. 6 Amherst (3-2) and away vs. No. 2 Norwich (3-2 in overtime).
"We had some good games and some not so good in the first semester," Houle said. "We did end the semester on a strong note with a win over Manhattanville (4-0), but one game back against Potsdam isn't enough of an indication for the second half."
Chelsea VanGlahn (11-6-17) and Teal Gove (7-8-15) are the leading point producers for the Cardinals, who have eight players with 10 or more points. Sydney Aveson (8-2-0, 1.38 gaa) has done the majority of the goaltending.
Last year, all three games between Plattsburgh and RIT were on the Tigers' home ice — 2-2 and 0-0 ties during the regular season and a 2-1 RIT win in the ECAC West championship game.
Following this weekend, the Cardinals still have some very difficult games remaining, including two at ECAC West rival Elmira, which is currently ranked No. 3 in the country, and nonconference games against Norwich and Middlebury.
