D3 Game Updates 2009-2010

Re: D3 Game Updates 2009-2010

Noticed Chatham played the series against Potsdam with just one goalie again. Does anyone know what happened to their other two? Either Chatham is getting hit with alot of illness and/or injuries or their roster is shrinking. 18 players rostered (collegehockeystats.com) minus the two goalies = 16. Both games against Potsdam were played with 13 skaters and a goalie. Anyone close to the program want to shed some light?

How is that possible? According to NCAA rules, all teams must have two goaltenders on the bench at the start of every game. Failure to do so results in a forfeit...

I believe that UMD has played with one goalie at points in this season. I think if they say that another player not in goalie pads is their back up goalie..then they can skirt the rules or something to that effect.

Not acc'd to the rulebook. In order for the game to even start, there are supposed to be two goalies on the bench. Here's the rule reference:

Players in Uniform
SECTION 3. a. At the beginning of each game, the coach of each team
shall list the players and goalkeepers who shall be eligible to play in the
game. A maximum of 18 players, plus not more than three nor less than
two goalkeepers, shall be permitted; and a captain shall be designated.
In exhibition games, 21 skaters and as many as three goalkeepers are
allowed.
PENALTY—Bench Minor.
A substitute goalkeeper must be on the bench at the start of the game and
shall at all times be fully dressed and equipped and ready to play. Upon
entering the game, the substitute goalkeeper shall take his position without
delay. A team shall not start a game with less than two goalkeepers.
PENALTY—Forfeiture (score will be recorded as 1-0).
Note: A team must travel to an away game with a minimum of two goalkeepers on the roster. If one of the goalkeepers sustains an incapacitating injury or, because of extenuating circumstances, is not able to suit up, a forfeiture penalty shall not be called. Officials are instructed to play the game and report it to the rules committee and appropriate conference, if applicable.

Did you miss that part?

No, I saw it ... not quite sure how to read/interpret it, though. It reads to me as though they must travel with two goalies, but if at some point during the road trip something happens to one of them, then the forfeit will not be called. This would essentailly give them "cover" until they got home and figured out what to do for their next game - i.e., which player will now start dressing as a goalie until the incapacitated goalie is back.

That note in the rules seems to apply only to when traveling to games, NOT to games played at home...

It doesn't read as though they must travel with two goalies — they have to travel with at least two goalies on the roster. Chatham has three goalies on its roster, but obviously there are "extenuating circumstances." If you have three goalies and two are hurt, what can you do, you know?

Ok, that makes sense. So as long as you have at least two goalies on the roster to start the season.

But don't they still have to dress a backup goalie (see top of the rule)?

I pulled this from the AHCA report on their meeting in May:

"The committee reinforced that each team must start play with two goalkeepers, unless there are extraordinary circumstances. In those instances, the rules committee must be contacted. The penalty for not starting a game with two goaltenders, previously a minor penalty, has been changed to forfeiture."

its a question for a D1 fan...DHMN maybe? If I remember correctly, UMD had their back-up goalie playing defense or something like that. She was a goalie on the roster, but because of extenuating circumstance she needed to play a different position.

If you have 2 goalies and goal A breaks her leg on Friday night, they can't expect you to replace her by saturday

Re: D3 Game Updates 2009-2010

Amherst has NY Rangeritis, the inability of the front lines to put the puck into the net on a consistent basis causing undo stress on the D and the G.

In the Rangers case it is self inflicted do to coaching staff. In the case of Amherst they just need a bounce or two in thieir favor to get rolling remember they did it last year when I for one counted them out,not going to make that mistake this year.

They play four NESCAC games against Bowdoin (2), Williams (2), and finishing up at home against Norwich. We'll see how they do against tough competition, but that is good heading into the playoffs.

Speaking of playoffs, Hamilton is on a roll now, I wouldn't want to play them in the first round of the playoffs, one of those top NESCAC teams will have a their hands full against them. As you can see all teams in that conference can be dangerous, it will make for a great playoffs.

You are correct - two goalies must be dressed. NCAA is only good at making rules, not enforcing them. For instance, there is an NCAA rule that all players in the bench area must wear a helmet otherwise it's a bench minor. There is a NESCAC team that consistently breaks this rule and no penalty has ever been assessed. And this particular rule directly relates to the safety of the players.
