Amherst v Elmira
Amherst v Elmira
For those not able to make the trip ....
After playing pond as a kid, club in college, watching 95% of Elmira's men home games since year 1, having season tickets to Cornell for years, and catching a minor league game every month or so, I watched my first women's game tonight.
General thoughts:
- About 275 fans in the place; I was told that's unusually high
- Real quick game, few whistles, 1 hr 41 minutes by the wall clock.
- Refs (same last name .. married?) were having communications issues. One waving off while the other calls stuff, out of position, hands up on apparent calls, but no whistles!?
Game thoughts:
- Amherst dominated large stretches of the game, and won a large % of draws
- The Jeff's forecheck was relentless to the point that EC would have to change lines after clearing their own zone (looked like the guy's old bad scheme

- The only legit chances EC got were on turnovers, blocked shots, basically a counter attack
- Amherst back checked the puck just as well. On the 1+ minute 6 on 3, EC never got off a shot
- Key to the game was the play of the defense(wo)men; in the offensive zone, Amherst's would press in to the play, while EC's would prematurely fall back to the neutral zone when the puck was pressured. Evidently a difference in confidence.
Goals:
- EC's was an odd-person rush, the result of a botched Amherst line change
- Amherst's 1st was a rebound batted in out of the air, the 2nd was the second or third rebound off a scramble. 3rd was a 3 v 6 SH.
Players:
- Hanlon was a beast on the ice (man among boys ... errr woman among girls)
- Richardson appeared to me to be EC's best
Amherst is a fine team, and this won't be my last women's game.
