D3 Frozen Four

Re: D3 Frozen Four

Matt - Thanks for the update. It seems fair, as long as the NCAA does the right thing and pays for the 3 teams from out east that would most likely have to travel west. How much do you think this would cost the NC$$?

less then they made the last two weeks of December and first week of January

Re: D3 Frozen Four

How is that only a recommendation? It clearly states that based on a recommendation by the NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey Committee, the NCAA Division III Championship Committee has approved the notion that if one region doesn't host for three consecutive years, they will host the fourth year, regardless of the participants. Meaning even if it is a 3/1 east/west split, it is heading west.

The only way this will NOT happen is if the committee formally votes to remove this rule from the tournament process. As of now, to my knowledge this has not happened and there is no discussion that it will.

If in fact this does get reversed, (which there is not so much as a whisper that it will), then feel free to gripe.

I talked with Bill Kronschnabel last year, head of the NCAA Division III women's ice hockey committee and he informed me that this rule is in place and told me that the championships WILL BE out west baring a vote to change the referendum, which to my knowledge has not happened.

He said that with the current ecomonic state of the country the committee will always be open to change if economically feasible. However, so far that has not happened as Matt said.

Between that letter and Dereks talk with Bill, it seems pretty definitive. Now it comes down to the 5-2, vs 4-3 and where.

I'm fairly certain an NCHA team would be top seed in the west, with their results against the MIAC so far. Ridder would be Ideal...but guessing River Falls or Superior would host if Lake Forest can't

The committee, although they do not like spending a lot of money HAS sent three teams west before for a Frozen Four. I think they'll pony up and do it atleast once to stop the eastern bias talk and give the West their shot (which they rightfully should have)

It's a shame they haven't had the chance to host yet as there have been some good Gustavus Adolphus, River Falls, Superior, Point teams etc.

Granted, they've failed on the big stage but can we really fault them with the travel and being outnumbered 3 to 1 most year? Chances are much better for the the three eastern teams to succee. Until the East comes to the West for a FF, it leaves the travel arguement open to debate since the Eastern teams haven't had to do it for a Frozen Four yet.

I'm not saying the West is better than the East or vice-versa. Just providing a little food for thought and playing devil's advocate a bit. You can't take away Elmira, Middlebury, Plattsburgh and Amherst's accomplishments. They are all outstanding programs and have earned each of their national titles.

Just for arguement's sake I'd love to see the FF go West for the first time in the nine year history of NCAA D-III hockey so we can have some answers and end some of the eastern bias debate.

Re: D3 Frozen Four

Not unheard of for the host institution to not get a bye. See Gustavus 2006 getting a bye in Plattsburgh. So a 5-2 could still happen with an east team getting the bye.

Exactly.

The conspiracy theorists need to get off their high horse. The tournament is going west this year unless rules change.

I wish I was still in WI/MN :(:(:(

NCAA's Ideal Situation
Adrian wins NCHA tournament, Lake Forest goes undefeated up until that point.
SOme MIAC team wins their tourney.
Chatham comes out of nowhere to win ECAC-W Tourney, bumping Elmira in title game.
Manhattanville wins ECACE, Trinity wins Nescac

Chatham Knocks off Mville, ELmira knocks off Trinity, Adrian gets bye, Lake Forest beats MIAC team
and they never fly anyone!

FF
Lake Forest beats Elmira
Adrian Beats Chatham

Lake Forest beats Adrian in title game!!

The NCAA's dream scenario would be to have Adrian host and find a way for Stevens Point/Elmira/RIT to be the three other teams.

NO TEAM flies in that scenario.

Mr. Kronschnabel is no longer Chairperson of the DIII Womne's Ice Hockey committee nor is he even on the committee. Look for the NCAA Championship committee to make a change. With Bill not there to make a fight for the West hosting the Championship committee will bow to economic feasibilty.

Interesting.....now you have gone and stirred the pot!

How is it that Matt and Derek do not know this point. I guess we will have to let this continue to play out.

I am sure Matt & Derek know Bill Kronschnabel retired off the DIII Womens Hockey committee. It is JUST my opinion that the NCAA Championship committee which makes the decisions will change the recommendation come March. Also I beleive the over all DIII Womens Hockey committee is chaired by a West representative but the make up is 3-2 eastern. Go figure!

It's the way to appease the West;)

Once again, its not a recommendation. It is a rule that has been approved by the D3 Championship committee. One would assume that there are procedures in place for overturning that rule, and they can't just do it whenever they desire.

I would hope that since it may not be an ideal situation come March, that the D3 championship committee would come in and tell the D3 women's hockey committee--ixnay on uleray. I would think that rule change would have to occur before the season started, and be place in the handbook.

Please show us where the rule is in the handbook?

Re: D3 Frozen Four

Just some food for thought. But the NCAA D-III Men's tournament comes to Ridder Arena in 2011. Why not bring in the Women's Tournament that same weekend. And send the women to Lake Placid with the Men the next year and so on.

In general....fans of the men's game are not fans of the womens game...esp on this board. I think you are better off pairing the D1 women's tourney with the D3 womens tourney

Survey to gauge interest in combined hockey events

The NCAA News

The Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Committee will survey its membership about enhancing the championship, perhaps by combining it with another ice hockey event.

The survey is expected to be distributed in early fall. The group received limited feedback at coaches meetings earlier this year, but outgoing chair Bill Kronschnabel, commissioner of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association, said a survey would help give the committee a better picture of how sponsoring schools felt about combining championships.

“We decided we’d survey the entire membership, so we’d really have good feedback on it,” Kronschnabel said. “We want to know if they would support combining the tournament (with another ice hockey event) at the same site.”

The committee would not identify championships that might be considered to be combined with the Division III women’s ice hockey event. The committee will analyze the survey results and discuss combining championships at its 2010 meeting.

In other business, the committee is exploring the creation of a videotape exchange policy, something many conferences have but has not been implemented at the championship level. The committee is evaluating video exchange policies in other sports, including the Division III men’s ice hockey policy, to see what format best fits its needs.

“When you get to the national tournament, you’ve got teams playing each other that have never seen each other before,” Kronschnabel said. “If they get a tape of the most recent game, they have an idea of the style that the team plays and their personnel, for scouting purposes.”

The committee also:

Recommended that Garnet Asmundson of Hamline be appointed chair and Cheryl Aaron of Massachusetts-Boston be appointed vice chair. The recommendations must be approved by the Division III Championships Committee. The committee also recognized Kronschnabel for his service.
•Recommended that the 2010 championship be hosted by the West region. The committee approved, effective with the 2006-07 season, the opportunity for a region to host the championship finals if that region has not hosted the championship within the past three years. The championship was held in the East region in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
•Responded positively to the Webcast of the selection show for the 2009 tournament. Kronschnabel said the online show was “well-received.”
•Noted that Marian will add women’s ice hockey in 2009-10, and St. Norbert and St. Scholastica will add the sport in 2010-11. MIT dropped the sport after the 2008-09 season.

Re: D3 Frozen Four

First post this year--been traveling alot and have see 15 D-3 games so far from both east and west. I have been following this thread and I need to weigh in. The east and west are as equal as they have ever been in the 5 years I have beem going to various games. I was at the Gustavus/River falls game last night and this is probably the the least talented Gustavus team in the last 5 years and they managed a victory against the #5 ranked team in the country (very even game, however). That follows what I am told was a convincing 2-0 victory against Stevens Point on Saturday.

I saw Trinity play earlier this year and they look formitable.

Nevertheless, I feel there is absolutely no chance the tournament will be out West this year. This is the NCAA D-3 womans hockey tournament and they need some competition so they invite 2 teams from the west to fill the brackets. ALL top D-3 teams are about even. It is a shame the NCAA does not recognize the marketing opportunity to move the tournament around. It will be out east again this year, mark my words.

If they go back on their own rules, all they do is blow any credibility that they are achieving in D3 women's hockey. I'm sure they prefer to show a strong persona rather than cave in on their own rules and appear weak. Going West this year is a good idea. Showcase the D3 talent in a different part of the country. People wood love to see the the best of the East at the tourny. My personal choice of venue would be the Schwann Super Rink(Bethels home rink) in Blaine MN or the Greenheck center in Wi or Seven Bridges in Il. All neutral sites for the western team or teams that would be involved in the tourny.
