D1 Scores and Highlights

Re: D1 Scores and Highlights

I missed the first five minutes of the third, but the Bulldogs scored to make it a 5-3 game anyway. They lead in shots 42-18. Lana Steck is in goal now for the Dogs.

Re: D1 Scores and Highlights

Wisconsin gets an empty netter with 23 seconds left in the game and ends up winning 6-3 over UMD to sweep the weekend in Duluth. If anyone happens to run into the Bulldogs defense, could you please send them home? Thanks.

This is hilarious!!

I thought last season that the Badger defense was the weakest part of their game but that, as the old saying goes, the best defence is a good offense, which they have in spades and which I think was the case last night and tonight. They have forwards that shoot with laser beam accuracy...just check the stats to see how they've already outdistanced everyone,...except maybe UND with their 18 goals this weekend.

They were playing like the Russians from the 70's...get 7 shots on you in the game and score 9 times.

Re: D1 Scores and Highlights

You take away the empty netter and that weird goal that I guess the Bulldogs scored on themselves and it's a 4-3 game. Can't say the Bulldogs didn't have their chances, but Rigsby was on her game all weekend. Congrats to the Badgers. They earned the sweep.

I agree except that I would add that I think regardless of Harss' not playing well again the bigger difference in the game was shooting accuracy. When Wisconsin shoots they shoot with conviction and accuracy. UMD...not so much...although I didn't see it tonight I've often seen UMD forwards just push the puck along the ice like a 4 year old would when in close expecting it to go in. I've never known what the thinking was and why they do that so often. When you have the opportunity and enough time, shoot like you mean it and to where the goalie is not...meaning the 5 holes if the goalie is up and over her if she is down.

Rigsby played better tonight...she didn't look too good last night...but more importantly UMD made her appear better tonight by shooting a lot of pucks at her instead of around her. As I've watched several UMD games over the last couple years this thought has often occurred to me...do they practice shooting skills and if so, with weighted pucks? And does the coaching staff ever address this issue...meaning discuss shot accuracy and high probability targets in different situations? If I had to guess by what I've seen, I'd say no to all three questions.

If I were Miller, this is something that I would spend considerable time on...as elementary as this issue may sound and as good and competitive a team as UMD usually is, I think Miller is really missing the boat on this one. With the skill her team usually has if their shooting accuracy was to improve by even just 20% the additional number of goals bagged would be crushing for their opponents and, as an example, the Badgers wouldn't have waltzed off with a sweep tonight.

UMD had the right general strategy tonight, at least by conventional North American standards...unload a ton of rubber on Rigsby...she's a good goalie but very beatable...yet, after 32 shots on goal tonight UMD had only scored once which equals a 3.12% conversion ratio...not good. In comparison at that point UW had 14shots and had scored 4 times which equals a 28.57% conversion ratio which as I previously mentioned, not that they were intentionally playing it this way, is the way Russia use to play Canada in the 70's...they looked for high probability shots and played extremely disciplined hockey constantly refraining from taking low probability shots even when they were handed those opportunities. You got 30 or 40 shots on them and they got 7 on you and you lost the game.

The final shots on goal were 49 -31 in favour of UMD which equals a blistering 6.12% conversion ratio and even if you don't count the two empty netters for UW that would equal a 12.90%
conversion ratio for them. At that rate differential doubling your opponents' output doesn't even get you a tie, all other things being equal.

The reward for achieving the goal of doubling your opponent's shots on goal total definitely must be greater than the virtual guarantee of losing the game.

Any team not emphasising this aspect of the game is missing the boat...even more so, when you have lots of raw talent.

Re: D1 Scores and Highlights

3-1 Dartmouth over BC after the 1st period. 2 goals from Kelly Foley to lead the way. Shots are 10-9 Dartmouth.

Re: D1 Scores and Highlights

Two 2nd period goals from Alex Carpenter and Dartmouth and BC are tied at 3 after 2 periods. Shots are 22-13 in favor of BC.

D1 Scores and Highlights

BC beats Dartmouth 4-3 on a goal with 1.9 seconds left by Emily Field

Rats.

This is a good team. Hard schedule. I see it (this first 30 days) as substantial challenge.

I see these first 30 days as THE challenge of the season...

So, Yikes! Worries me.
Better team than 2010-11, methinks, even.

?

I WAY WAY prefer to sneak into the season- unheralded, unranked-
"Down from the Hills they come..."
(College song...)

Darn. Now the bleak north country (Larries, Potsdam...) and they are a-fllllyyy flllyyyy yyy flllyyyy yyy yyy iii iii iii in' up there...!

Harvard College. Stop fouling. Yikes! 12 pen's (for 24 minutes in the box...) against McGill (3 pen's): hooking; elbow; again elbow; trip, more trip; boarding(!); hitting from behind (!!!)...etc.
Is, Yikes!

Who wants to go there to play now?

Hilarious. Love it...For those of you who have not seen it, one of the best and most funniest items ever produced out of Dartmouth is the following address: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELC_e2QBQMk It's worth your time watching all 24 minutes of it.

Re: D1 Scores and Highlights

Cornell at Colgate:

1st period, 12 min. to go in the 1st period. Cornell up 2-0. Freshman Saulnier scores Cornell's first 2 goals of the year.

Saulnier from Jenner and Johnston (I think we'll be hearing that a lot this year!)
Saulnier from Jenner and Fulton (freshman -- 1st NCAA point as well)

Re: D1 Scores and Highlights

Cornell up 3-0, goal by Jenner coming from Johnston and Young. It was a 4 on 4 goal. One of the earlier goals was on PP.

End of 1st, shots were 14-5 Cornell. Colgate 0-2 on PP and Cornell 1-2 on PP (although 1 PP was shortened by the penalty making it 4 on 4).

Re: D1 Scores and Highlights

2nd Period -- Saulnier goes to the box for a 5 min. cross check. Then Catherine White gets a penalty on the PK so Colgate goes on the 5 on 3 and scores (Goal by Volpe).

With 3 min. left in the major to Saulnier, Colgate gets 2 penalites (Philips and Doyle) so now 4 on 3 for Big Red.

Colgate employed an agressive forecheck on the PK and got burned as Cornell then went 4 on 2 which was too easy. Goal by Karpenko from White and Cudmore. 4-1 Cornell.

Another penalty on Cornell (unsportsmanlike, Catherine White) just shortly after Saulnier came out of the box.

Saulnier gets her 1st NCAA hat trick in her 1st NCAA game -- shorthanded goal.

End of 2nd -- Cornell up 5 to 2, with each team scoring 2 goals in the 2nd. Kind of sloppy play, lots of penalties. Colgate's 2nd goal was Kueber from Philips and Houtz.

Cornell way outshooting 33-10.

Re: D1 Scores and Highlights

1/4 way into the 3rd period picks up right where 2nd left off with a penalty.

Saulnier gets the PP goal (her 4th goal of the night) from Jenner and Rougeau. 6-2 with 16 min. remaining.

Cornell outshot Colgate 25-0 in the 3rd, but only found the back of the net once on the Saulnier deflection.

I believe Jenner had 4 pts (1G, 3A) possibly 5 pts as I am not sure if she got an assist on Saulnier's 3rd.

ECAC Rookie of the week honors for Saulnier (how many freshmen have scored 4 goals in their 1st NCAA game I wonder?)

Final shots on goal Cornell 58, Colgate 10.

Cornell looked good for this being the first game of the season. There was nothing Mazzotta could do about either Colgate goal. Sass had a phenomenal game in net for Colgate. Score could have been much worse without her. I believe shots were 64-12 (with 58 to 10 being the saves.)

I really liked what I saw out of the freshmen tonight. Saulnier is everything one could hope for in a freshman (minus the 5 minute major, which I didn't really see except for the aftermath of the Colgate player flying through her own net.) Fulton has very good skill, and Leck is also very solid.

Re: D1 Scores and Highlights

After one period in the Capital District games, Princeton leads Union 1-0 and QU leads RPI 1-0.

Re: D1 Scores and Highlights

0-0 Brown Colgate after two periods. Colgate controlled the first period but couldn't solve Moore in net. Brown played a solid second period and seems to be building confidence with each play. Anybody's game in the third. I hope its Brown!
