D1 Commitments 2012-2013

Re: D1 Commitments 2012-2013

I'm curious, because I've never been at a school that's starting a new D-1 program like Penn State is this season: what would make half of the initial D-1 roster washout before graduating?

It's not that they won't graduate, but they likely won't play four years of hockey. As Penn State introduces more scholarships, up to the max of 18, they will be able to offer larger packages to incoming recruits, thus attracting better players. Many of next year's class will lose their spots to more talented players. Remember, every school wants to attain an even mix of Fr, So, Jr and Sr's on their team and it will take a new program the full four years to attain that mix.

Okay, that makes sense. Thanks for breaking it down like that.

Re: D1 Commitments 2012-2013

It's not that uncommon to have half of a recruiting class leave hockey before graduation. New program or not.

OHA is a weird organization. One of the TC invites played for the second team. It's not about the best 19 making the top team and the next 19 making the second team. It is more about loyalty. The maroon team has been together for 3 years now with the core girls remaining the same. Neither the Gold OHA or the Maroon OHA are really dominant junior teams.

Not one TC invitee from OHA plays on the Maroon Team. All girls go through a testing period and the top skilled and hard working individuals are the ones who earn that gold team spot. I beg to differ about not being a dominant junior squad. I invite anyone to review their record against the top PWHL teams in the past and review the past full scholorshipsn offered to the graduates Their graduates are on top lines of schools like BU UNH Clarkson Vermont. Stay tuned to continued success from OHA

About two years ago, Trillium posted stats on this subject for all ECAC teams, covering a six year period. The variance was from 10% to 50%, with the average and mean both in the low 30% range. In other words, on average, if a school attracts 6 recruits each year, 4 of the 6 are still with the team during their fourth year.

According to myhockeyrankings Gold is ranked 21/33 of Jr. teams in Canada. Maroon is ranked 32/33 teams. The record on the site indicates that against PWHL teams they are 3-8-1. They beat Maroon 2-0. They have some good players at OHA but they are by no means a powerhouse.

They best team they beat is Ottawa, and then Ottawa beat them on a later date. Ottawa is a .500 team in the PWHL

I think noone looks at myhockey rankings they are incomplete anyways. Given that OHA is a school with the hockey base the coaches would place more emphasis on the development ( on ice and also physical training) as opposed to winning a particular game. I don't think you see the same girls always on ice in situations for ex. pk or pp. As a parent I don't think I would pay to put my child in any such school where development wasn't most important . After a child leaves any team I always ask myself did my kid get better and did they enjoy themselves -- nice to win but who the heck remembers the winner of the Ottawa winterlude in 2011 .

They have to tip their hat with the fact that each year they have a return rate of 99 to 100 % within their girls program. Their development program for these young girls has jumped leaps and bounds for being such a young program. All graduates to date playing NCAA I NCAA div III or CIS quite an accomplishment My daughter being one of them and a 3 yr student of their program. We are convinced that our daughter would not have received her full scholorship to a ranked top 5 team without the offerings of OHA's dev program. And to top that a great education as well!

I agree that is important, I was just pointing out there is not a significant difference between the OHA Gold team and the OHA Maroon team. I was actually defending OHA Maroon team to the poster who assumed the Maroon team could not possibly produce a true D1 player. I feel that the Maroon team have quite a few players that are head and shoulders better than the bottom players of the Gold team. This could be due to these players on Maroon taking their development and training more seriously than some players on Gold. I just feel that both teams can produce players that are college hockey ready.

OHA does take the develop of all the teams quite seriously and you are right that those that take the program seriously and work hard will reeve the full benefits of the program compared to those that just want to get by. This will change from year to year it's my understanding the Gold team lastnyr was ranked 8 amongst all ---again quite an accomplishment for such a young program-- this program is looking for the hardest working girls not necessarily the strongest skilled---it is the development of each player and where they fit best for their own success that matters

Re: D1 Commitments 2012-2013

nice to win but who the heck remembers the winner of the Ottawa winterlude in 2011 .

The people who won it :D ...... Which this year would be no one as there has not been a U19 division at Winterlude in the last two years.

All kidding aside, IIRC the top OHA team did quite well at Stoney Creek this year, certainly befitting a higher ranking than what one poster suggested earlier. The top OHA team, sorry not familiar with their color naming scheme, sometimes does poorly in some tournaments because they are missing key players due to national and provincial U18 commitments. The Team Quebec players are missing quite often in the fall months.

If you look at their placement rate into schools, it is quite a bit higher than most club teams in the PW. I suspect that most that go there, go there with the idea of landing a spot on a college team. Not unlike the NAHA and NSA concept.

It is not for everyone, but they do service a certain need.

MSU Mankato added Lindsay Nagel(Fargo South HS, Fargo, ND), Giulianna Pallotta(Etobicoke Dolphins, Beeton, Ontario) and Katie Johnson (Anoka High School, Anoka, MN) for the coming season according to their website. They've also added a transfer, Casey Hirsch (Syracuse University, Maple Grove, MN). They aren't showing Itsuka Baba on their website so I don't know what changed unless she hasn't been cleared yet.
