D1 Coaches At Risk

Re: D1 Coaches At Risk

This kid has no clue about college hockey. Never heard of two captains? Really?

The NHL and lots of other hockey leagues only allow 1 captain so I can see where he got off track.

I did think his question about the back up goalie having so many starts was fair.

Celine Whitlinger split time with Hannah Ehresmann last season, too, when Ehresmann was a freshman. With Whitlinger graduating in a couple months, I can see wanting to have Ehresmann ready for being the #1 goalie next season, rather than sitting her until she's a junior and wondering how she'll handle D-1 hockey. As a freshman, Ehresmann did manage to beat Mercyhurst when they were at #6 nationally, so she's no slouch. She's no Celine Whitlinger yet, but she won't be scared to be the starter next season, either. She will be the only Penn State goalie with D-1 experience next season, too, so it's good that she's gotten plenty of it.

Your response lacks one important aspect, an outrageously inflamatory overreaction to the situation. In the future, please refrain from bringing common sense to the Penn State goalie situation.
My two cents, I think more like 25 percent of the starts for the backup makes more sense. Otherwise you are constantly in development mode.

When you become a college coach some day you can manage your goalies however you want to. This coach also chose to manage his goalies how he wanted to no matter what other people think about it.

Maybe so about the backup goalie but that doesn't excuse his lack of knowledge about the two captain system. This isn't the NHL we're talking about; it's college hockey and he should have done his homework. A quick check of ECAC rosters (like Harvard maybe??) would have told him that colleges do indeed have the option of two captains.

You can have as many captains as you want but before each game you have to identify one of them for the refs to talk to if they need to. Refs will pretty much talk to any player with a C or an A anyway.

A friend forwarded this to me. What the heck is going on at Penn State?

Update - Sorry didn't see that there was already a thread for this: See Thread: Another possibly problematic women's coach

Here's what I posted on that other thread:

IIRC, this wasn't a well received hire in the first place. It was common knowledge that he was hired because of his relationship with Joe Battista but neither of them had any previous experience in NCAA women's hockey. It was basically a hire of convenience and of friendship not one made because it was the right hockey decision. I think everyone in women's hockey laughed at this decision when he got hired. It sounds like it's coming back to bite them in the rear end now. What a surprise.

Re: D1 Coaches At Risk

In an effort to continue this conversation, if a person were to rank the current div 1 coaches in order from best to worst, what would you say?

Oh boy...here we go . I suspect that very few who are active on these forums have any real knowledge about the capabilities of individual coaches, but I'm sure that won't prevent some of the usual suspects from opining on the matter.

I'd say your 4th post was a waste of everyone's time, and a 5th post would be totally unnecessary.

Re: D1 Coaches At Risk

ok, sorry. Not trying to ruffle any feathers here. just curious as what people thought. I don't know of anywhere else to see differing opinions.

agfire, this is becoming a more and more unpleasant place.

It hasn't always been like this, hopefully it won't stay this way.

Laura Schuler to Dartmouth. Megan Duggan resigns from Clarkson to pursue 2018 Olympics.
