D-III Scores and Highlights: The stretch run and the road to the 'chip

Re: D-III Scores and Highlights: The stretch run and the road to the 'chip

Wow, The coach bashing here is unbelievable. Coach Lomanto has had nothing but success in her short tenure at Adrian. As well, her team has improved each year under her guidance. Let's not go crazy here with our analyzation. This isn't the NHL. There is quite a bit of talent disparity on teams. Benching a kid mid game is tough when you don't really have a ton of options. As well, I'm guessing from looking at the stats you are talking about a senior here? By the time this player/line of seniors was minus three the game was out of hand and the possibility of a comeback was unlikely. Benching them in the final game of their senior season in the NCAA tournament would be pretty heartless.

As well, I'm guessing a week ago down 3 goals to River Falls there might have been a kid or two playing poorly. No mention here of a great job of Coach sticking with players who might not have been having a great night?

Fact, Lomanto is a winner. As a player and coach at Utica her teams always won, and her team at Adrian has always won. They win despite the fact that have to play a majority of their games on the road, and with tremendously long road trips. Lomanto controls her non Conference schedule and brings the team east to play tougher opponents than out west. She clearly knows what she is doing, and she now has a Championship ring to prove it.

Perhaps instead of jumping all over Coach Lomanto who is clearly doing a tremendous job with a young program. We congratulate the young ladies from Adrian on a tremendous season. The senior class which should walk away from their experience with a ton of pride in what they accomplished over four year period and the memories of winning the O'Brien Cup. Adrian's program is now listed among a select few programs who have had the opportunity to play in the NCAA tournament.

Dogcatcher, they say a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing. You clearly have a little bit of knowledge of the game of hockey. However, decisions such as who to bench, what type of power play will work a teams personnel are decisions for a coach to make. While it is clear to this fan that you have a little bit of knowledge of hockey you really have no idea what you are talking about.

Just to let you know you have a few facts wrong the team has not gotten better each year since Lomanto has arrived the first year was their best record. Several players have produced less each year she has been there. I think the most insane thing I have ever heard is the don't bench somebody that is losing the game for you because their feelings might get hurt. I know if I was out there getting scored on shift after shift I consider sitting out a shift or two as a blessing. Because being the reason my team is getting pounded and being embarassed by the other team each time I step on the ice is not why I signed up. The kids that she did not play have feelings too and one of them scored the only goal guess that makes coach wrong. If you watch this team a lot which I do (every home game they have ever played) it is easy to see that they win games because they are better atheletes then most teams they play. Their success is based only on the ability of one player to beat another. You see no signs of organised plays in any zone you see the same mistakes made by all the players ( weather it's turn overs at the blue lines, losing twenty faceoffs in a row, poor gap control, passing the puck in front of our own net and so much more) someone has not taught them. Yes I get it they are winning but with the talent they have on this team they should be winning more. So I know you have several facts wrong I'm going to assume it's the same reason as coach, your to lazy to do the work and seek help when you need it. I can see you can read but it is also clear that you don't understand fully what you read.

Like I have said, the team has a lot off talent. Adrian should never have problems getting talented players when there only competion in Michigan is WSU and until recently he hardly ever recruited in michigan. Since Kimball left WSU they have had a hard time getting talented players or I should say they don't know talent when they see it. Until the male chovinists get out of East Lansing and Ann Arbor, Adrian will always be very Talented with they amount of girls that play hockey in Michigan. I'm sorry to say but you all are acting like a AAA team! Good Luck

I would argue the team has gotten better (a lot better) under Lomanto. She took a team that had gone 11-11-2 to 18-6-1 (includign a 10 game winning streak at the end of the season, sounds like improvement to me) in year one . That's and improvement, but the schedule was significantly softer then than it has been the last two years. In her second year she made the schedule a bit more difficult by reducing the number of easy games she was playing out side of her NCHA opponents. Bethal, Buff State and Saint Mary's (plus one of two games against Chatham) all easy wins came off the schedule. She replaced those games with RIT, Neumann and Utica while the team went went 0-6 against these teams their record agaisnt NCHA teams stayed about the same 10-3-1 to 11-4-1. Obviously in year three the team had a program best 19 wins, won the NCHA tournament and got to the NCAA tournament. To say they haven't improved (especially in a confrence that is growing and much more competitive than it was three years ago) is a tough arguement to make. You'd like to prove that they are worse cause individual players on the team have scored less? That happens to a lot in Women's Hockey. You only need look at Plattsburgh, Middlebury and Norwich this year to find a Senior athletes who's numbers dropped significantly. You would be had pressed to find someone who would argue those three programs have poor coaching. Look I don't want to get in a huge back and forth here. You are obviously a huge Adrian fan. I'm a fan of all women's hockey. My original point was the Adrian players and coaches should be congratulated on a great season! Going places no Adrain WIH player has ever gone before.

As for me be able to read and not fully understand. I think I got your point, you think coaching is the problem with Adrian women's ice hockey. I got ya. I just disagree.

As a fan who knows every girl on the team, I have not talked to a girl who feels that they have learned or improved since they have been at Adrian, with the exception of the first year of the program. All the systems are sloppy and have been taught to teams from a young age. Each week at practice has the same schedule and the same drills and nothing is adjusted based on the teams they are going to play. I have also heard that she does not understand how defenseman can pass the puck on their forehand breaking out on both sides of the net and tried to tell them they had to use their backhand, only to be told a week later that you are not allowed to make backhand passes at all in practice. After watching games this year like the Oswego games it is clear to see all the other coaches in the league on a much higher level. Oswego found their weaknesses and forced Adrian to struggle for a win the first day and a loss the next day. No offense to Oswego, but Adrian definitely had more talent, but poor coaching on Adrians part was the reason for the loss.

Don't know if he was there...but puck was doing a lot of bouncing around Valiant net in first period -- Midd missing by inches and Cote looking good. Second and third more even, but the goaltenders looked strong and were getting the bounces. 3:2 shot advantage Midd with Manhattanville physical and strong -- started all underclassmen -- a force to be reckoned with for the next two years for sure. Coach a little young too, not seeing any adjustments (but whatta i n0) -- jsut seemed to be same approach
Puck bounced to midd they batted it in with 6 mins left -- held up for winner -- would have been an interesting ot otherwise, but the hometown team and goaltending didn't look like it ever would have got passed Bloom. One great crossing pass by Manville stuffed on the crease by her as attacker hit the paint -- great play on both sides. low penalties, no scores on pp's

Tax time for the bear no doubt -- govt's got his attn

Game could have went either way... Mville had more dangerous scoring opportunities, but Middlebury had more offensive zone time. Midd controlled the play in the 1st period and the 2nd and 3rd was fairly equal. Cote for Mville is the real deal and only a sophomore ! In fact mville's best players were all freshman e soph's. The better team definitely won that night but Mville gave them all they can handle.

I don't want this to come out wrong, because this loss was in NO way shape or form Ashley Kuechle's fault. Having followed her career in Saskatchewan before going to college I know she has the ability to be an elite college goaltender, and she was obviously on her own out there for the first 2 periods...but why in the biggest game of the year to date would you start a freshman goaltender who had maybe 5 or 6 starts all season and leave your two most experienced goalies that happen to have better numbers sitting on the bench? I'm not a RF fan so perhaps there are injuries or something that I don't know about, but on first glance I just don't get that move.

I heard a discussion at FF this weekend on this subject. If accurate, goaltender selection for that game may have been influenced by a disciplinary action. Not trying to spread rumors, just reporting what was being tossed around.

What was being tossed around is in no way correct. The goaltending decision between RF and GAC was in no way a diciplinary issue. It was simply a coaching decision. Keeks is a solid goaltender who Cranston was pretty sure GAC hadn't seen play before (unless they attended the game against st thomas). Neither Campbell or Deardorff were/are in any trouble. They both make an effort to set an example for underclassmen. Was it a poor decision? Maybe. Would it have gone differently had Cassi or Melissa played? We'll never know. Bottom line is that it was just something that Cranston decided to do.
