Cycling 2016

Re: Cycling 2016

Can someone tell me why Cav didn't get relegated yesterday? Did they change the rule where in the finale of the stage sprinters have to stay on their line? Cav passed Kittel and then moved right in front of him. I don't think Kittel could have passed him but it probably prevented him from finishing 2 or 3 on the stage.

I don't watch cycling much since Lance's demise, but it sure seem s as if the tour has **** poor crowd control.

To which demise(s) do you refer, the real ones or the ones that needed to happen for sad, pathetic fanboys to finally pay attention? They spanned from 1999-2012. Otherwise, what dx said.

Re: Cycling 2016

Just watched yesterday's stage. Quintana is the biggest wheelsucker since Levi.

What happened to the little climber from the mountains of Columbia? Couldn't even outclimb Adam Yates.

Also, my Velogames team sucks. The only guy getting me points is Sagan

Re: Cycling 2016

I've been saying it for years. First, the catchphrases that they use have just become grating. Second, they constantly misidentify riders, which they've been doing for years(Nicholas Roche always being called by his father's name, for example) but now its just constant. Third, stuff happens on screen during the race, an attack, or a rider dropping, and they don't even notice cause they're too busy yammering out one of their trite old catchphrases. And then there's

Then NBC layers on the same two guys saying the same stuff throughout every single stage.

Every single day it's the same exact commentary, over and over and over again. Even during the same stage, the same things over and over. they bring absolutely nothing new to the race, no info, nothing different from one day to the next except their pre-scripted identifications of which chateau or wine-making town they're passing by at the moment.

Love them or hate them, but I so wish we had Carlton Kirby and Dan Lloyd or Maggie Backstedt doing the commentary. Granted, they ramble on during races about any number of things other than cycling, but as the article says, there's a lot of downtime to fill during cycle races. And they do let you know when stuff is happening in the race, or what to look out for. And they're interesting, like hanging out in your living room talking bike racing with your buds.

My favorite Carlton Kirby line was last year, I forget the race. The camera pans by a bunch of riders stopped along the side of the road for P&P's "natural break", and Kirby says, "Well, we can't tell you what's going on here.....................ok, we can say.......... it's what men do when out on a Friday night and they've had too many skinfuls". Had to hear it with his accent, but it was just hilarious.

I will say, I hate VDV as a race commentator, but he's been tolerable in the studio. Just wish someone would 'Ask Bobke' whatever happened to his Livestrong bracelet.

Numerous teams have spoken about this in post-stage interviews over the past week. They want to attack...but they can't. When guys like Wout Poels are banging out 400+ watts indefinitely day after day and reeling attacks from Valverde, Bardet, etc. effortlessly while drinking a can of ****ing Coke, what are guys to do? It's taking everything they've got just to hang on. Wout Poels...dusting the best climbers in the world, some of whom prepped specifically for this event. Great.

Good news is this is all totally legit now that Sky has unveiled its latest marginal gain: personal laundry devices for each rider. So they don't mix germs. Yep, that's it. Screw EPO, if USPS had just had nine washers and dryers Wonderlance probably would have won 15!

Velogames: currently 2084th/44k+, which I'm surprised at. Pretty much a two and a half horse team: Froome, Rolland, Dumoulin, Frank, Sagan, Tankink, Durbridge, Cancellara, Alaphillipe.

I like the English guys. They're totally in the bag for the Anglos but you're going to get some homerism no matter which broadcast you pick. Ever hear the Italian commentators when an Italian rider attacks? Orgasmic :)

Been streaming the Eurosport feed the last two weeks and Kirby has been on a bunch, yet not every day. But no matter who is calling things on a given day the amount of useful information and analysis they provide is staggering compared to that pair of jack-in-the-boxes I put up with for the first week. Plus it seems they take commercial breaks like...never. The second Eurosport feed on the list at steephill.tv has been flawless, and I'm in the U.S. at moment so it should work well for any of you guys.

Great post, though. You must have dug deep into your big bag of courage for that one! Turned in the post of your life!

"I will not try to win a stage uphill." - Sir Froome, yesterday

I've had it. Berzin, Lance, Ullrich, Mayo, The Cobra, The Chicken, The Pirate, Big Mig, all of them. Bring 'em back. Time to play hardball. If the race is so **** easy he openly says he doesn't even need to bother trying to win any mountain stages, **** it. Time to move up into the class you belong and we'll see what happens. USPS Hincapie and CSC Cance driving all day.

And naturally we're going to launch 2006 Landis and 2009 Contador from 80km out. Have a nice day, you ****bag.

Edit: forgot the Gerolsteiner boys. Yeah, they're all coming, too.

Re: Cycling 2016

Let's assume that Phil and Paul are done after this year. ( and that's questionable, the feedback from most people on the Bicycling magazine Facebook page has been 95% supportive) but lets say they do leave. I don't see big changes in the way the event is covered. I think they will hold on to most of the crew and just change over the pbp guys. I guess that will be an improvement and I like Jens and Vandevelde overall, (in the roles they have). So you'd have to think any gains would be marginal.

I do a group ride once per week, and one of our guys is a former pro. I never bring up doping, but he did mention that he thought it had never been cleaner. Fwiw.
My team is at 21000. Having Dennis withdraw hurt me.

Re: Cycling 2016

I have 4503 points and I'm in 6474th place out of 42,000+ after today's stage.

Peter Sagan has pulled the heavy lifting on my team. How anyone can construct a team without him on it with the scoring nowadays is beyond me. Kristoff has been solid with 707 points for a 10-pointer. Hoping he can come up big for me in Paris and get the W.

I needed more out of Quintana and Aru for the price I paid for them and didn't get it.

You win and lose this game with your six pointers. Thomas DeGendt fans are rejoicing.

Re: Cycling 2016

Froome had crashed was riding someone else's bike and the only one to attack from far out was Bardet. What a bunch of wimps. When you attack from 2-3K out all your trying to do is move up a place or two not gain a couple of minutes. Astana did all that work and Aru did bumpkus. Reminds me of 2 years ago when rather than ride for the win Quintana and Valverde raced for the podium in the final week

I think whenever Paul and Phil hang it up we will probably be treated to Bobke and Christian calling the race. Out of the crew they have now I probably prefer Schalnger and Jens.

Do they have some rule where they have to speak to the same 12-15 riders over and over again? Wow another interview with Richie Porte. Almost fell of my chair when they interviewed Bardet. I'd like to see an interview with Meitke he's the surprise of the tour along with Adam Yates, he's from South Africa so he obviously speaks English.

Tomorrow I sure we will be treated to TJ off the front driving the pace 100 mile solo breakaway. This is why he's been dropping off the pace right:D

Nah. It's just after listening to those Eurosport guys call the classics and smaller stage races, and sometimes the Giro and Vuelta, over the past four or five years, I just cannot abide Phil and Paul anymore. Phil's call of the TT yesterday just served more to confirm that the guy has gone senile, and needs to hang it up. Paul too, cause he's even worse when he's not with Phil.

Re: Cycling 2016

The mindset of the peloton is shown by Tejay's quote the other day about being dropped. Paraphrasing, he says, "I didn't give up, but what's the point of fighting and fighting and fighting just to finish in 15th place(on the stage)".

Well that is the point, to keep fighting.

I know he was doing it to try to set up Quintana the other day, but at least Valverde tried to go away a couple times. It ended up costing him, and he lost a couple minutes, but at least he tried to do something. Quintana could see Froome being gapped by his own teammates, and still didn't even make an attempt.

I know. I was merely channeling Paul Sherwen on your behalf :)

huge day for me today with Izagirre winning and Alaphillipe 4th. I vaulted up into the top 4000 overall. Aru falling apart hurts me in the final points. Need Kristoff/Sagan to do well tomorrow to keep a high placing.
