Again, social distancing doesn't stop the virus, it slows the virus spread. There is a difference, and one that people conveniently ignore when they claim we can just social distance this problem away.

It slows the spread enough that it will run out before everyone would get it had we done nothing. And decent social distancing practice will stop it, btw. Not just slow it down- we've not been face to face with anyone for a month. If we keep this up, we will never be exposed to it. Which is the entire point.

If you limit your exposure to a very tight group, and if you have to go outside of that, you eliminate 95% of the chance of exposure, then the virus will naturally run out. Not sure how you conclude that's only good for slowing it down....

Again, once the virus can't find a new host, it's done. The window of transmission is finite, not forever. So previously sick people are not transmitters, nor are not infected people.

The problem is that's social distancing that YOU are not willing to do, so your version just slows it down.

They learned the hard way. They had infections in 2002, 2009, and 2015 where they then booted the party that screwed up in 2015 for the current guy who put all the successful plans in. We had 60 million people elect a ****** instead.

What are we gonna learn from this?

I figure we're gonna learn that poor people are expendable, and if hundreds of thousands of them die, that's just the price of doing business, rich people can take advantage of national crises to corner even more of the market wealth for themselves, just as they did in 2008, and government's only responsibility is to see that those rich peoples' wealth isn't jeopardized, for any reason, just as we did in 2008.

I thought alfa did. He wrote "If you can't see how social distancing can stop the virus, you're not paying attention." That was the specific sentence I responded to, even though I included his whole quote. Again, I don't think it "stops" it, I think it slows it.

If that was not his intent, fair enough.

No, I do think that it will stop it. At some point, stop the grow = stop the virus. It's just that nobody is willing to wait for that point.

Other countries are making social distancing work. Why can't we? They didn't find a convenient rate where hospitals are running 100% all the time, they waited until the dip was significant enough that it was done. It worked great in South Korea. It worked in Taiwan.

We are choosing to not let it work here.

S Korea has the exact same constraints on treatment and vaccines as we do. Yet they hit it quick and hit it hard. Now they have baseball on ESPN2.

So don't tell me that it does not stop it. The rate that S Korea is dealing with right now is effectively stopping it. I don't see them waiting for the entire population getting exposed and then just dealing with it. It's actually so low that it's less than influenza.

It works, if we let it. Downplaying it's effectiveness is just giving up.

Back to Lords and serfs. I'll be working for the honor of some dude in a castle.

Wait, I thought we fought a war against that 225 years ago. Guess not.

We should have been a lot stricter a lot sooner. Now we've basically given up. It's a complete disgrace.

I really don't know why you think I'm not social distancing. Other than going to my work, where I sit alone in my office, about two trips to the grocery store, one trip alone to the golf driving range, and a trip to Decorah, IA, where I didn't get out of my car, I haven't left my yard. The fact that I don't think that I owe it to you to social distance doesn't mean that I think it's a bad idea, for your own protection.

There was a story from the 1918 flu pandemic. It was a small town in Utah. They heard about the pandemic, realized that no one in town was exhibiting symptoms, and locked the town down. No one was allowed to leave or come in, and everyone had to stay in their homes. For weeks they went with everyone remaining healthy. Then suddenly, the flu struck and mass death occurred.

Somehow, it got in. Don't kid yourself. You may have reduced your chances at exposure for the time being, but you are not safe.

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/05/04/states-shrug-off-white-house-benchmarks-for-reopening-235339

“There’s this mindset that it's like running a show and you've got to keep people tuned in, you’ve got to keep them interested and at some point you've got to move on and move on quickly,” said a former senior official at the Health and Human Services Department. “Viewers will get tired of another season of coronavirus.”

We're living in a reality tv show. All that matters are the ratings.

Wouldn't have worked here anyway. South Korea has oceans on three sides and what might as well have been the lunar surface on the other side with the DMZ with North Korea. There's a reason why New Zealand is the next country doing well.

They also enforced quarantines, which would've made our subhuman, ape-brained Dumpies apoplectic and there would've been shootings.

The "war president" has surrendered.

After a month and a half. This is the man who claimed that only he could keep Americans safe. Now they're under attack, and he's surrendered. Without even fighting.

And "we" weren't because the "business" party spread their usual gibberish.

Not only given up, but screaming at people who do want rules followed.

I thought attitude towards guns and healthcare would be what pushed me out of this country, but I actually think it’s going to be public health. I’d like to live the last half my life around people with brains and a soul and too much of the population here has swallowed the fox kool aid

Of course. Red states will blame deaths on murder hornets trained by the Clintons

Didn't want to chase down the NCAA football thread.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">University of Tennessee announces it plans to bring all students back to campus this fall. Joins LSU, Alabama, Texas A&M, Missouri, Arkansas, Georgia, & South Carolina in making this announcement. SEC is playing football this fall, y’all.</p>— Clay Travis (@ClayTravis) <a href="https://twitter.com/ClayTravis/status/1258055470352347136?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 6, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Should be interesting because the NCAA will be floating rules to bring people back in a staggered way that are going to make this next to impossible. I could see them delaying the season but no way they are going to be able to start on time unless the NCAA changes its tune
