Sounds like Spain is going to shut down too.

Well at least we're not in Europe. Sheesh.

This is interesting to me because of France's "smoking" history/reputation. Not sure what the numbers are now but even people under 60 in France grew up in that smoking heavy environment. Not saying the US is different, I don't have all the data on that. But I have to believe being a smoker is gonna hurt your chances here. Or even if you were a long time smoker who quit.

I suspect smoking is part of it

Re: Covfefe 19: now in 3D

If I heard right smoking definitely is a bad factor to add in. I was in Paris 2 years ago though and I dont think I saw much smoking at all. Too touristy now...

Re: Covfefe 19: now in 3D

From what I have been reading, the key to avoiding an Italy type situation is to ramp up the testing. No idea where we stand with that. But they think it's a big reason why South Korea has had better success.

The key to avoid an Italy type solution is to have enough hospital beds, respirators, ventilators, safety equipment, and such to treat the numbers of ill.

Sadly, we may even be less prepared on that front than they were.

No but for the people under 60 who grew up in that smoking era, even if they quit I am sure they did extensive damage. Plus people who don't quit and still smoke at home.

Re: Covfefe 19: now in 3D

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has announced in a press conference that all of Kentucky's hospitals are going to stop performing elective surgeries by Wednesday of next week in order to prepare for the inevitable influx of Covid-19 patients.

We stand at- we suck. The government is a serious cluster fvck. Worked thru H1N1 and some other nasty stuff. It wasn't fun but they did there job. This is ridiculously bad. I am appalled, disgusted and otherwise completely confused at why they have been so bad.
A few threads ago I made the comment that the Administration was so bad it would be every State for itself- testing, supplies, plan, direction on how to proceed. Here's where we are-

The States are now all working independently to get a source of tests. Some are making their own. There is not really any oversight to see how well that is going. The Feds first distributed faulty tests so only 3 of the States had access to tests that worked. They now are sending out more but not even a minute portion of what we need. They are still trying to restrict and ration access, not letting the Provider make the decision. There are countless cases that were originally refused a test that are now positive.

Many Staters have come out with their own version of what they have deemed acceptable response. They are not all the same.

The Feds decided this week to declare a Federal Emergency. They have not given clear direction. They have modeled behaviour that is detrimental. They continue to make directives that are not based on science, put people in charge who are ill equipped and have no knowledge, have muzzled the experts and classified information regarding deliberations.

I don't think I missed anything in my predictions :(

This guy is a buffoon. He is absent from leadership when he should be at the front and he has yet to say anything pertinent or constructive.

When you think back we have had some really awesome Surgeon Generals. History won't be kind to him

It is no worse here. In fact in many places it is probably much worse. (and coupled with obesity and diabetes)

Kentucky is probably near the top of this list for citizens with the smoking/obesity/diabetes trifecta. I think Beshear is aware of this and trying to get out in front of it by closing literally everything in an attempt to flatten the curve.

Plus our lofos never stopped smoking. The Dumpies at my work all strut around like the Marlboro Man.

Stopping smoking, like eating right, and safe sex, is a class marker. The benighted part of the country never changed any of their behaviors.

Yeah there is not one person who is in charge of this thing that should be. (on the Executive Level) Where the hell are the experts? Why is Joe "Conspiracy Theories and Steroids = Ratings" Rogan getting guys like Oesterholm on but he isnt advising the friggin people making policy?

This is what happens when people decide they would rather elect a Leadership Vacuum instead of putting adults in charge.

Re: Covfefe 19: now in 3D

Don't forget, the administration refused the WHO's offer of testing kits.

That's criminal in and of itself. And the only reason they didn't want the kits is cause they didn't want to know how many cases there were here. Trump said it himself, he wanted the numbers to stay low.

I dunno I was in Biloxi, Mississippi a few years back and they say "Hold My Chicken and Waffles!". You may not be able to use the beaches (they wouldnt dare take Obama Money for the clean up...no joke) but you cant walk 3 blocks without a Waffle House!

Re: Covfefe 19: now in 3D

Good thing I live 5 mins from a hospital, because odds are I'm going to get it. Of course, there will be no beds for me, let alone ventilators. But I'm young and macho, and will power through this!
