Cops: Nothing has fundamentally changed.

Everyone involved in his torture should be put in isolation for 3 days - the same length they had him held in psychiatric care - fired, and their pensions forfeited

To be fair, 3 days is the standard length of an involuntary hold. Otherwise, agree with the rest of your post. Brutal story.

Two civilians and the suspected shooter as well.

Ambushed while providing medical assistance. Nice.

The rapidly evolving series of events created a confusing narrative that included a misstatement by police, who suggested at one point Thursday evening that four people were dead. It turned out to be three.

The violence played out like this, according to Evans, Blackwell and a police statement issued after midnight:

It started with a report of two men shot inside the apartment around 5:15 p.m. — the incident that Mitchell responded to.

Outside the apartment and down the street, Mitchell saw two people he believed were wounded in the shooting and began to provide medical assistance.

One of those people shot Mitchell — what Evans described as an "ambush," though the details remain murky.

At least one other Minneapolis police officer arriving at the scene exchanged gunfire with the shooter, and an officer was wounded with non-life-threatening injuries. The shooter was fatally wounded.

In addition, a civilian — whom Evans described as "an innocent bystander, we believe"— was wounded critically. A firefighter was also wounded with non life-threatening injuries.

Inside the apartment building, officers found two men who had been shot. One was dead and the other was "gravely" injured, Evans said.

As of late Thursday, three people were dead: Mitchell, the suspected shooter, and one of the people found in the apartment. Four people were wounded but alive: the second officer, the firefighter, the bystander, and the other person found inside the apartment.

And he helped rescue that guy with Alzheimer’s on his third day.

rumor is that police chief went off in a closed door meeting and blamed local politicians.

if he’s referring to mortiarty fine with me- she doesn’t seem to want to persecute anyone and sounds like the shooter had multiple open warrants so who knows if there’s more history there

Apparently he was 36, not 28. Odd. I distinctly remember reading 28.

edit: bottom of the article

"Correction:Â Previous versions of this story gave an incorrect age for Officer Jamal Mitchell."

Must be pretty surreal for India, and Rohit in particular, to see one of their fans get attacked up close and personal by police. I know most of us are immune to the violence in this country but it truly is staggering when you think of it from an outsider’s perspective.

Speaking of Moriarty. Sounds like she's in a pretty vicious tiff with Walz. Accused him of being homophobic. Woof.

Yeah….interesting move beefing with Timmy.

I am not a fan of her.

I fully understand socioeconomic factors and crime. But not locking people up who are carjacking or stealing cars all day ain’t helping society either.

How many police departments are going to hire Timothy Loehmann? He's up to 5 now.

He was fired from the Independence Ohio police department because he literally did not know how to fire his weapon, and according to his chief was unfit to be a cop.

So Cleveland hires him and before he can even clear probation he proceeds to kill 12 year old Tamir Rice, violating all sorts of procedures and policies, as well as it being a criminal act that prosecuters decided to let go without a charge. Eventually he gets fired by Cleveland for falsifying his application to be a cop there by failing to disclose what happened in Independence. Independence by the way is a suburb of Cleveland. Parts of it are a mile away from Cleveland. It wasn't like he came to Cleveland from Mars.

After getting fired here he is eventually hired by 2 other small town police departments, one in southeast Ohio and one in Pennsylvania. He resigned from both before serving a day on the job, and fortunately before he killed anyone else. Now a small West Virginia town hired him, and not only did they look at his actual record -- like cops anywhere don't know who this guy is, I'm sure privately he's a hero to many of them -- but the chief of the White Sulphur Springs West VA police department says his past doesn't matter. Poor guy was never convicted. Golly, he only shot and killed one young black kid. There's plenty of cops out there shot way more than one. We could never get our hands on a policeman that good. Despite the chief pimping for him, he resigned last week, just days after starting there. No confirmation, but all indications are he managed to not kill anyone there either. 15% of White Sulphur Springs is black, so he showed a lot of restraint.

That anyone thinks Loehmann is fit to wear a badge and carry a firearm says some pretty sad things about a lot of people.
