Cops: Nothing has fundamentally changed.

Federal authorities indicted former Stoughton Police detective Matthew Farwell today on charges of allegedly murdering Sandra Birchmore, a 23-year-old woman that the 38-year-old North Easton resident had first met as an instructor of a Stoughton Police Department vocational youth educational program when she was a teenager. According to the Department of Justice, Farwell allegedly killed Birchmore “to prevent her from disclosing information about his longstanding sexual exploitation of her while he was on duty, beginning when she was a minor.”

Nice:

On January 20, 2021, according to the federal indictment, the Stoughton Police Department received a phone tip saying that detective Matthew Farwell “had been having sex” with a woman named Sandra Birchmore—confidential information that was then relayed to the married union official.

Soon, detective Farwell was “losing control,” acting U.S. attorney Joshua Levy said today in a press conference.

On February 1, less than two weeks later, federal prosecutors allege that Farwell “killed Birchmore by strangulation,” and then “staged Birchmore’s Canton, Massachusetts apartment,” to make it appear that the substitute teacher, who was pregnant, “had committed suicide.”

Prosecutors alleged that Farwell left the crime scene to drive to Newton Wellesley hospital, where his wife was giving birth to their third child.

Cops stick together.

Gonna cherry pick this from an article almost 2 years ago.

Three former police officers in Stoughton, Massachusetts, had inappropriate sexual relationships with a young woman who died by suicide last year after becoming pregnant, the department's chief said Friday after a lengthy internal investigation revealed the "serious misconduct."

Birchmore was underage when one of the relationships began, McNamara said. Birchmore became pregnant and died by suicide in February 2021, sources had confirmed to NBC10 Boston. Investigators say there was no foul play in Birchmore’s death.

The three Stoughton officers accused of having inappropriate relationships with the 23-year-old are *Matthew Farwell, *William Farwell(*twin brothers) and Robert Devine, according to new details announced by McNamara. All resigned before they were interviewed as part of the investigation.

All three of the men, in addition to a fourth person who now works for another police department, are accused of having inappropriate relationships with Birchmore, according to McNamara. That department has been notified and up to five men may have been involved, police said.

Somebody took The Choir Boys as an instruction manual.

In other nice news...

Medina offered two puzzling excuses for leaving his camera off. He "cited intermittent conversations with his wife, who was a passenger in his unmarked patrol vehicle at the time of the collision," Ortiz says. "He claimed there was a right to privileged communication between spouses, which specifically exempted him from mandatory recording requirements." But the relevant policy "does not provide for nonrecording based on spousal privilege."

Even more troubling, Medina said he "purposefully did not record because he was invoking his 5th Amendment right not to self-incriminate." Since "he was involved in a traffic collision," he reasoned, he was "subject to 5th Amendment protections."

Think about the implications of that argument. Body cameras are supposed to help document (and perhaps deter) police misconduct. But Medina is suggesting that cops have a constitutional right to refrain from recording their interactions with the public whenever that evidence could be used against them. By turning on their cameras in those situations, he argues, police could be incriminating themselves. That is the whole point.

A great read. Thought the movie sucked.

Agree. I read that book when I was 13 and that was too young, but it pretty much jumped me to 38 in one shot and that was very helpful later.

There was no way to authentically make that movie in America in 1977. There probably still isn't.

Adams is completely f-cked. Nobody in NYC is surprised, least of all his own voters. He is Republican Level corrupt.

Minneapolis PD continue their shameful ineptitude

guy harassed by neighbor for over a year, shot by neighbor. 3 warrants out, police commander says they won’t execute warrants for officer safety.

Good god:

In a fiery news conference Friday, Chief O’Hara defended his police department’s handling of the case and pointed blame at the media, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, the Minneapolis City Council and even the victim for allowing the dispute to boil over to violence.

O’Hara said officers had tried numerous times to arrest Sawchak, but he never came out of his house or responded to police who were trying to make contact.

He said given that the suspect is mentally ill and is known to have a gun, there was a “high” likelihood that executing a high-risk search warrant would end in a violent confrontation.

“We wanted to arrest the suspect where he would be least likely to have access to firearms. That is outside the residence,” O’Hara said, adding that up until Wednesday, MPD only had a warrant for threats Sawchak had made. “Unfortunately, in this case, the suspect is a recluse and does not often come out of the house.”

O’Hara proceeded to blame Davis Moturi for not notifying an MPD lieutenant when Sawchak left the home. He said Davis Moturi should have left the tree on his property alone after Sawchak had threatened him over it.

“The situation escalated in part by actions that were precipitated by the victim,” O’Hara said.

The chief then took aim at “the current rhetoric around policing” and said it “hampers our ability to effect lawful arrests.”

I mean the Hennepin county attorney is a ahithead but not sure how she’s to blame here

just disgusting. Victim blaming 101, he’s a black guy so this must be his fault somehow

his white wife is on my next door pleading for help and some old white men are on there telling her it has to be their fault cause cops work so hard.

except mpd who are still crying they can’t kill blacks without bad publicity

Moriarty sucks but this is disgusting. Because of political beefs you’re going to neither protect nor serve a citizen that’s reached out to you directly for assistance?

I’m forced to say it again. The MPD is a mob with pensions.

I’m surprised the chief didn’t come out and say to let social workers handle it
