I know I would feel safe around cops who think Kyle did nothing wrong...

The police are the enemy.

When is this country going to wake up about the current state of law enforcement. We waste billions of dollars on ineffective policing that does nothing to prevent crime and very little to solve the crimes that are not prevented. Yet we throw money at it like old ladies at slot machines in the casino. If police departments were not overrun with white supremacists killing unarmed people of color with impunity we should STILL be up in arms over all the wasted money and lack of success.

Most of what too many Americans believe about policing are myths. And we tolerate them killing a thousand or more people every fucking year. If the average public school teacher was as ineffective at his or her job as the average cop, most people would be screaming bloody murder. Yet they are far more effective and the average teacher almost never shoots and kills an unarmed black student.

Yankees fans probably want Aaron Boone's hide right now, but at 6-11, he is actually more successful at his job than the police are at theirs. In 2019 the police cleared just 17% of the property crimes reported to them and only 45% of the violent crime. And since cops do such a terrible job, most people do not even report when a criminal act has been commited. Fewer than half of all violent crimes are reported, and only about a third of all property crimes are reported. And remember, "cleared" does not mean anyone was convicted and punished, only that a suspect was identified charged or referred to the prosecuting attorneys offices.

So even if cops were not assualting and killing people for no reason and getting away with it, serious questions should be asked about policing in this country. Yet nowadays I can't drive more than two blocks without seeing one of those stupid "thin blue line" flags fluttering on someone's flagpole. We are a nation of sheep, rubes and dupes.

Right wingnut talking points seem to be "I'm not saying this wasn't the right verdict [even though I totes am], but this [murderous] cop had no chance at a fair trial! There would be looting and riots and the brown people would be scary!"

I mean, this is a state governor - one that thinks he can become president - pulling a literal "I'm not saying it's aliens, but it's aliens" routine.

They seem to be leaning into the "well it is the right verdict for the wrong reasons" type of thinking but they are doing an awful job hiding the "the wrong reason is cause Dem Darkies Gun Kill Youze Whites" that is behind it.

They never learn...

Man she should have complied...how dare she wonder why 3 guns were pointed at her? She is a grandma she should have known better...

Bottom said she was driving from her home in Fulton County, Ga., to Raleigh for her great aunt’s funeral on May 30, 2019, when she noticed a police car trying to pull her over for going 80 mph in a 70 mph zone. It was around 8 p.m., and Bottom, who said that initially she didn’t notice the lights because she was listening to the music of Santana and Prince at a loud volume, was trying to find a safe area to pull over. Her fear of police also played a role in finding a safe spot to stop on Interstate 85, Bottom told The Post.

“There’s been a lot of police brutality, and I was terrified,” she said.\

Body-cam footage obtained by The Post shows Barkalow uttering expletives about Bottom during a pursuit the officer described as an “exciting chase” that had him “at the edge of my seat.” Officers identified her as an “older Black female,” according to the lawsuit.

When Bottom tried to pull over, another police officer had already sped up ahead of her Toyota Sequoia and placed spike strips on the road, causing Bottom’s SUV to stop immediately, according to the lawsuit.

Moments later, Barkalow, Benfield and Bouk had their guns drawn and screamed for Bottom to get out of her car, the lawsuit alleges. In body-cam footage of the chaotic scene sirens are so ear-piercingly loud that one section of the footage is difficult to make out. But Bottom said it was clear the situation had escalated.

Barkalow and Benfield then grabbed Bottom by her arm and went for her dreadlocks, pulling her from the SUV onto the ground, according to the lawsuit. As the three officers were restraining her with their knees on her back, Bottom asked what had prompted the force.

“I was just driving!” she pleaded to the officers while on the ground, according to the video. “What have I done wrong?” Body-cam video shows police not responding to her questions.

Bottom was crying as she told police that her shoulder, which she said had been injured in a past car accident, was in serious pain. It was around this time that Barkalow “forced Plaintiff’s left arm behind her to the point where Plaintiff’s wrist was near her neck,” said Bottom’s attorneys. The force resulted in a “pop” sound that signaled she had torn her rotator cuff, the lawsuit alleges.

It was the thrill of the chase. Action. Everything he dreamed of when he decided to become a cop. And then he got to muscle around an old woman. Great day on the job.

So, let's get into the details here.
  • Usually 80 is that magic threshold where they'll tag you, so no issue there.
  • No where in this story did they say how long the police had been following her, attempting to pull her over (this is germane to their state of mind leading into the altercation). Was it 17 seconds? Was it 13 minutes? I'm not defending the police or the victim here, but this is an important fact to determine the next steps. In another time I'd have given the police the benefit of the doubt here on their use of a second car and spike strips, but that time is not this time. Still, this is an important fact.
  • WTF with literally all the rest of it? Once she's stopped, why are the forcibly removing her? Did they even give her a chance to comply?
Again, in another time I'd have been a bit more sympathetic to the police. But this seems like a "yay she's running! Let's fuck her up!" situation.

We hear about the ugliness, as well we should, and there is ugliness; but, we don't hear about the thousands of safe interactions.

Are we sure cop interactions are not like airplane crashes, meaning we only hear the bad news?

So the good ones make excuses for the bad ones? Is that what you are trying to say?

As opposed to making ALL cop interactions good ones?

And where are all of these "good cops" who have the positive interactions when the bad cops come along? Seems like the good ones are easily swayed into the overreaction bad cop side.

BTW, for all of those "good stops" we also don't hear about the cops that are still abusing their authority just via intimidation. By this, I mean the reason there's "the talk" so that cop interactions don't turn bad. Where the person being pulled over has no other reason relative to the rest of the crowd other than the color of their skin. And this really does happen.

What about all the days OJ didn't kill Nicole?

Yes, we are, because the only reason we're hearing about the bad ones is because cell phone cameras are ubiquitous. The bad interactions aren't new, it's just now there is evidence our lying eyes can't ignore.

Also, how many times do you hear about "cop plays hoops with young minority" in an effort to rehabilitate the image of the police. Ask yourself why that is a story worth appearing in print if cop interactions are normally good?

So we don't need to investigate airplane crashes? Got it. Such a lack of concern now. Running away for a year changes someone I guess.

Good god...this is the perfect answer! Wow uno I applaud this!

If bodycams and cellphones didn't exist all of these bad stops would be way worse. Remember they are doing this knowing people will see it at some point. (Chauvin looks AT the camera as he is killing Floyd) Hell even with video these cops aren't getting fired as often as they should, but at least it is starting to happen.

If not for the bodycam that grandma is convicted of "resisting" as a best case.

Kepler,

A+! The Nazis were fine on the days they weren't actively killing Jews.

Swansong,

I have no issue with them pulling her over. Spiking her car to stop her seems a bit much but as you said we dont know how long they followed her. (though I have had similar things happen and they didn't even flinch and it was late at night) But in what universe is going 10mph over the speed limit cause for drawing weapons and threatening the driver? I mean, it isnt like she is some NFL Linebacker looking dude talking smack. She is a friggin grandma. I highly doubt if my grandma had been pulled over they would have dragged her by her red wig and thrown her to the ground because she committed a moving violation. Of course my grandma was a little White Lady...not a Black Woman with dreadlocks.

Yeah, just like plane crashes - if there were 1000 plane crashes every year.

You know why there are NOT 1000 crashes every year? Because after the first one, the NTSB and the FAA investigate, find the root cause, and fucking fix the problem. But no, we can’t do that when it comes to cops. There are no problems with cops, apparently.

Hey now...Internal Affairs is always there looking into things! I mean that has to work right because every cop procedural show always treats them as the enemy!!

(allowing the cops to "police" themselves is one of the ten worst ideas ever)

I'm not defending anything. I admit the ugly is out there.

I'm asking how much of it is there.

You should be able to recognize that the guy who gets up at the church social and says, "Yes, I know Frank just keeled over, but I'm sure only his portion of the potato salad was laced with strychnine. So dig in." is displaying what they in the biz call Poor Optics and what the rest of us call "staggering insensitivity."

We get it, you don't get it. You're probably baiting us, but on the wild chance you actually want to be educated, read a book. Don't expect us to keep indulging your Quiet Rooms act.
