After all the protests, all of the news coverage, all of the journalists documenting their violence, not to mention plenty of local, state and national politicians decrying this sort of behavior, it continues unabated. The police want war. They are begging for it. The white nationalists and supremacists are counting on them provoking it.
In January the new politicians will need to to do two things immediately. First, come up with some kind of a coordinated, science based plan for corralling the coronavirus disaster left to them because of trump. And the second thing they must do is a massive, far reaching and overwhelming reformation of law enforcement.
I'm not talking about "criminal justice reform" as most would think of that. I'm talking of the front lines of it, the law enforcers themselves. What was in that linked video was disgusting and stomach turning. You can hear in the cries and voices of those people that they truly believed that this man was going to be killed. Not just brutalized with "non-lethal" force, but killed. They sounded like they believe they were about to witness another unarmed black man's life being snuffed out by murderous cops.
I have been saying this for two years or so now, but there will come a day that if we do not change our ways, violence like this in our streets will be met in kind. When the only voice people have left is violence, they will use it. At some point these cops will begin paying with their lives when they choose to go so far overboard with force. The violence in our streets will be the citizens against these cops. And it doesn't matter if the citizens will be outgunned by the militarized and over-armed police. If you think your only choice is dying or fighting back and dying, you will still pick the latter. I'm not saying it is right, but if in the moment captured on that video someone had opened fire on those cops, I would understand why. And my only concern would be for the innocent people around who may get harmed.
