Cops 9: You Are What Now?

Re: Cops 9: You Are What Now?

I don't know if there's any such thing as a local issue in the age of Reddit. We had a bunch of yoopers carrying signs across the bridge in Houghton last week, albeit looking a little sleepy and chatting with Sheriff's deputies ("weren't you in my Stacey's class?") along the way. The only whiff of controversy I've ever heard of the cops up here involved issues of access and investigation on the reservation. But because of the internet/cable news, there they all were: DEFUND THE POLICE.

Exactly the sentiment I was trying to get across. In addition to perception being 9/10ths reality I'll add that other rule of politics: if you're explaining, you're losing. I see Handy's point about this being a local issue and he's right up to a point, but eventually Biden and all Dems are going to be forced to take a stand on abolishing the police whether or not that's the actual meaning behind the idea. Gotta be smart about this one.

A good article and all reasonable proposals. The problem as you may acknowledge is that perception is 9/10ths reality. If the catch phrase is "abolish the police" the casual voter is not going to dig through the nuances of that. The Republicans however will fill in the blanks. While that might not matter in Minneapolis as Handy suggests, it might in other places that we need to win in order to mercifully send Chump and his merry band of Nazi's packing once and for all.

If it were Biden proposing this you may have a point. But it's not. It's one city council right now recognizing that their department may be beyond repair and looking at something different.
If people are so stupid they can't see something local vs national then Trump may win anyway.

Re: Cops 9: You Are What Now?

One of many articles being written about how to "abolish" the police.

Wow, a police union that wants to create an independent SUBPOENA POWERED commission to oversee their department? I think there is going to be a union president who will face a challenge in the next election. But leaders gotta lead and good for them that they don't look at something like that as declaring war on the police.

San Diego is also a city doing more with less. They have one cop for every 750 or so residents, compared to Minneapolis with one for every 530 or so residents and they have fewer reported crimes than does Minneapolis.

Re: Cops 9: You Are What Now?

That should be prosecuted as domestic terrorism. Holy sh-t. Living here I should not be surprised, but I still am.

Wow, his picture is that of a man who knows he has led an absolutely wasted life. He looks like he knows his maker is sadly disappointed and the only thing he has to be hopeful for is that there is NOT a Hell, because he knows if there is, it will eventually be his eternal address.

Where is jack and his lack of surprise?

The "abolish the police" movement creates two problems for the left. First, it gives something for Trump to run against. I don't think most of the people pushing the "abolish the police" program care about that problem.

Problem number two is trickier, however. If you went out into the crowds and talked to people about what they mean, there aren't many of them talking about a nuanced shift of spending from police to community services. Most of them will tell you, "no, we are going to literally abolish the police."

That isn't going to happen. So now the left has a disillusioned and angry group of people the left must rely upon for their support. That is a bigger problem.

Re: Cops 9: You Are What Now?

huh. Judging by that picture, I could have sworn that guy was Antifa.

Re: Cops 9: You Are What Now?

It's OK though, there's no evidence of white supremacists being involved in inciting violence. It's actually Antifa and the far-left - just ask Bill Barr.

The police are the enemy. Prosecute them.

Re: Cops 9: You Are What Now?

You would think the party that got hammered by the term "death panels" would learn their lessons, but it isn't like the democratic party has been particularly good at politics for the last 30 years. The good news is they weren't much better in 2018 and managed to do quite well. They have 4 or 5 months to show the suburbanites what is meant and what they are trying to do. Plenty of time to either screw it up or craft an understandable message.

Suburbanites arent exactly fleeing from the "Defund the Police" rhetoric. Plenty of suburban people at the rallies.

The suburbs arent a bunch of Donna Reeds who get the vapors every time a there is a bit of uprising anymore. That is why the suburbs have been trending Blue.

You can like the people without liking the organization.

Does Houghton have a police force of its own or is the Sheriff in charge? (honest question I have never been there)

That the suburbs have been trending blue is why even being bad at politics might not hurt the democrats as much as it used to. Which doesn't mean they shouldn't polish the message between now and election day. On most issues my dad is to my left but even he would have a hard time with the concept of "disbanding" police departments and would want a clearer message.
