This, more than anything else, more even than whatever it is you get down to in Thailand, is why you will burn in Special Hell for eternity.

wow. talk about the irony....

in however many eons it takes, when there comes a time that one certain group of pet is searching for their rights and a ""whatever" lives matter" protest begins....it will be the cat who opines, 'sorry, but all animal lives matter' ;)

Re: Cops 9: You Are What Now?

All of these reports and videos of cops abusing their power and just going after protesters is really depressing. For these "heroes" who are supposed to be sanding up for our rights and protecting the public to outright deny speech in such a vindictive manner is pathetic.

How can such hateful people get signed up for being cops? Is there some kind of underground movement for a-holes like this to find each other to become cops?

Given this is an election year, the vote for the rest of the year will be interesting. I can see a lot of new voters coming out, and a lot of anger trying to overturn what is going on. We already know the fearful POS's that are running this country vote all the time.

A part of the reason is that police budgets are rather thin, so salaries are not that much. They take who they can get, which oftentimes are the ex-military lunkheads that want to carry a gun and a beating stick all the time. Add to that, no proper budget for proper training, and that adds to the problem.

We basically program military to think/act a certain way, but we don't put that same effort forward for the police. Mind you, military and police are DIFFERENT, however, they are not really being trained differently, and there's the issue.

Re: Cops 9: You Are What Now?

I’m not sure that the training issues are lack of budget.

Minneapolis banned funding for that stupid Warrior training. Cop union then started funding it.

The warrior training needs to go. And we all know what we think about the MPLS union, specifically their leader.

More money for PROPER training, extensive training, screening processes, etc.

Easy solution- cut staff in half, keep budget. Weed out the bad ones, as we are being told are the only ones.

Still, it's pretty sad that we've kept this idea that the police are law enforcers like they are instead to serve and protect us. I very much doubt that police prevent much crime as opposed to prosecute it. They barely solve crimes, and we give them tons of money to protect us like this?

Re: Cops 9: You Are What Now?

So the Buffalo mayor is saying the 75 year old is a "major instigator". How big of ****ing ******* are his cops? And what kind of a loser is the mayor?

Major instigator.... in what way? Did he call them names? oooohhhhh, so bad. It's funny how one side can consistently dish out insults and threats, but the moment it turns the other way, they become snowflakes.

Some cities could cut some staff and remain effective, others probably need more officers for patrols and such. It would depend, IMO, on population density in that particular city/suburb.

I know my suburb's police are pretty laid back, they don't really nitpick as far as anything I've heard of or seen (resident for 13+ years). From talking with other locals, and business owners (who the police assist during city events like block parties/etc), the officers seem like they want to work with the citizens, not necessarily FOR the citizens, if that makes sense.

Re: Cops 9: You Are What Now?

Better education and increased opportunity is how we prevent crime. More cops does not have the same effect.

Cleveland OH, with a population that is about 10% smaller than Minneapolis (estimated 383,000 versus 425,000) has 1500 cops, compared to about 800 in Minneapolis. Crime rates there are actually worse, almost 15 violent crimes reported for every 100,000 residents, versus around 8 per 100,000 in Minneapolis. Overall crime is higher in Cleveland as well, with 59 violent or property crimes reported per 100,000 residents compared to around 50 per 100,000 residents in Minneapolis. Those numbers are 2018 data. Neither city stacks up well compared to others in the country because neither city has done enough to expand educational or job opportunities. South bend IN is just about 1/4 the size of Minneapolis with 105,000 people. It has a police force that is authorized to employ about 225 cops so it has higher staffing as well per 100,000 residents and it too has more crime than Minneapolis, falling in between the rates there and of Cleveland.

For any study you can cite that shows more police is the answer I can cite 10 that say there are far more effective ways of lowering crime. Sure, Minneapolis could hire 2200 more cops as I am sure 3000 people cracking skulls and putting their knees on the necks of unarmed black men would likely scare the population into complete submission (which in fact is what anyone with even one functioning eye can see that's what the police want). More cops is not the answer now and it wasn't the answer a generation ago and it won't be the answer a generation from now.

Actually this is the right answer, almost. Cut the forces in half, but cut the budgets by just 1/4. The extra money for the police is split two ways, one, better salaries because even I will concede truly good cops are underpaid, and then use the other half saved on staff cuts to invest in cutting edge training. Also we must get the unions to agree to much more stringent policies with regards to standards and practices as well as easier ability to remove the bad bad ones in exchange for those hefty salary increases. The other savings realized in the budget cuts to police go into whatever programs any particular city needs, better job training, better schools, more social workers or mental health workers.

With dollars like that a cop in South Bend IN would make at least $71,000 per year after reaching the Patrolman First Class rank, which all sworn officer reach after 2 years (3 counting their probationary year). That salary would be approximately double what the median wage is for someone employed in Indiana who works full time (and that is before overtime, extra detail pay, promotions, etc. are factored in). I don't think anyone could argue with a straight face that making double what other people in your state make on average is anywhere remotely near underpaid either. Well maybe Rube could.

GF brought up a good point the other day. She is hardly a Cop Defender but she does buy how the stress is part of what causes this lack of empathy. She brought up the idea of regular (I said monthly but she said maybe quarterly) mental health checks especially early on. Make them mandatory. (make it a paid day off if you have to) Have them meet with professionals so they can decompress.
