Cop trys to handcuff a 17 yr old, is he over the line?

Re: Cop trys to handcuff a 17 yr old, is he over the line?

Interesting side note: In Illinois the person filming would be arrested (filming a cop is illegal in IL) and the evidence would be inadmissible against the officer.

IMO that's a bad law. I'm of the opinion we want all the tools possible to correctly enforce justice...which ever way that justice goes.

The environment in which we persecute any officer making a mistake, or what some perceive as a mistake, has certainly improved law and order and enhanced public perception of law enforcement. They are public school teachers with slightly higher odds of being killed in the line of duty.

I don't condone the more egregious acts some officers have committed and think recurring problems should be punished permanently but think, in general, they deserve more understanding than they get in these situations.

Unless it is a friend of the president, in which case they should have their integrity questioned on national TV by the potus...but get a free beer out of it.

Re: Cop trys to handcuff a 17 yr old, is he over the line?

The cop was doing the best he could under a tough, outnumbered situation in a hostile environment. He could have gone to his baton, taser and even his gun, but he never did. He was trying very hard to control the situation without escalating it, and decisions are being made in realtime, not in hindsight.

Those girls obviously have no respect for law enforcement. Interfering with a policeman while he's arresting someone else is a very dangerous situation, and the girl in pink deserved what she got.

The only question I have on this is did the policeman seem to lack some training in proper arm restraints? or perhaps he was afraid of hurting the original girl? Maybe SteveP or others that have had law enforcement experience can answer this better....

Swami's right. Let's get one thing clear from the gitgo: Seattle isn't Birmingham in the days of Bull Connor. Far from it. And if all those wannabe photographers had told those two brats to behave themselves instead of thinking they were about to tape another Rodney King beating, then maybe things wouldn't have escalated as they did.

Cops are like the referees of life: they blow the whistle and put you in the box. And there are ways to address mistakes or bad behavior by officers, but they come after the fact, not during the incident. A cop tells you to do something out on the street ("show me your license" "step out of the vehicle" "put your hands on the roof of the car" "put your hands behind your back") you do it, period. Not to do it is against the law.

I am sick and tired of TV coverage of incidents involving African American suspects and white cops that inevitably devolve into some sort of racial incident. I wish I had ten bucks for each time over the years a "witness" at the scene of a violent confrontation with the cops claimed "that cop just shot him, the guy wasn't doing anyting wrong." Yeah, but somehow these dudes almost NEVER show up in court to testify under oath about what they saw. Yet TV ALWAYS puts those claims on the air.

A few years ago there were claims that police in Cincinnati were "murdering" "unarmed" "innocent" young African American men. As usual, the charges were the stuff of the evening network newscasts--until it turned out the allegations were total BS. Young AA men had been fatally shot all right, but they weren't "innocent" and they certainly weren't "unarmed."

That's a horse**** law, and probably par for the course given the city of Chicago.

That intersection is notorious for accidents involving pedestrians, which I assume is why they'd be 'vigilant' toward jaywalking. Regardless, it's really rather simple - don't assault/threaten a cop and you probably won't get smacked around/tazed/shot/arrested.

I hate police brutality, but this wasn't it. This was a couple of effing idiots getting what they deserve. If only he had clocked the ******* filming too.

Video has taken all the fun out of law enforcement!

You're absolutely right Pio. Not to make light of that, but I had to laugh when I had a Sikh driver accuse me of "stopping him because he was black." :D

I explained that I was good at my job, but not good enough to see his skin color from 100 feet behind him at 2 in the morning. He still got the ticket!

"You're black? *, I thought you were Chinese! My bad. You have a nice night."

Re: Cop trys to handcuff a 17 yr old, is he over the line?

Seriously? Who hands out jaywalking citations unless the jaywalking caused an accident?
Back when Giuliani was elected mayor of NYC, he ordered the police to start enforcing all the laws, regardless of how trivial they might be. Of course, when he ordered that NYC was in a very bad place, and he saw much of the solution as start enforcing the petty offenses so the criminals know you will enforce the more egregious offenses.

And regardless what you think of the man (I've never been wholly impressed by him, but not for law enforcement issues), it worked, in combination with a few other factors, too.

Re: Cop trys to handcuff a 17 yr old, is he over the line?

The age of consent in Washington is 16 so handcuffing is not illegal, but that type of behavior is better behind closed doors than in the middle of public streets...

Re: Cop trys to handcuff a 17 yr old, is he over the line?

From HotAir.com: Seattle teen apologizes to cop:

17-year-old Angel Rosenthal and Officer Ian Walsh met face-to-face at a North Seattle community center, said James Kelly with the Urban League of Seattle…

Kelly says Angel wanted to apologize directly to the officer and “the officer was good enough to meet with her and accept her apology.”

Also present at the meeting were Rich O’Neill, President of the Seattle Police Officer’s Guild, Deputy Chief Nick Metz and Rev. Reggie Witherspoon, Pastor of Mount Calvary Christian Center.

“(Walsh) did not have to do this,” said Interim Seattle Police Chief John Diaz. “But he felt it was an important first step in the beginning of the healing process. I want to personally thank Officer Walsh for his willingness to participate in this dialogue in what has been, undoubtedly, a very stressful period. I would also like to thank Angel. I think her willingness to reach out to Officer Walsh shows bravery and maturity.”…

Levias has pleaded not guilty to obstructing an officer. [Rosenthal] was charged Friday with third degree assault.

Re: Cop trys to handcuff a 17 yr old, is he over the line?

i'm glad this was on camera. he did nothing wrong. that is textbook resisting arrest. i wouldnt say he was assaulted, but people need to learn that when a cop is talking to you/reprimanding you/arresting you... that is not the time to squirm around, carry on, and make a bad situation worse. and for the other girls to try to intervene, that is probably another arrestable offense. (obstruction of justice?)

obviously the fact that this happened over jaywalking is absurd. but that is neither here nor there at this point.

For some reason, the Seattle PD is anal about jay walking. I was advised of that seemingly moments after I arrived in town. Since it's common knowledge, you would have expected our two little princesses to walk the 15 feet to the pedestrian walkway and use it.

Happy to see this one came to a good conclusion. I sense there are parents in the background here not too pleased their little darling was seen on TV acting like such a beyatch. And it's also good to see that race hustlers weren't able to analogize this incident with the Birmingham bus boycott.

Re: Cop trys to handcuff a 17 yr old, is he over the line?

Yeah, the cops at the U of M always get the jaywalking hard-on after someone gets hit by a car. It's a $110 fine IIRC.

One guy ran from the cops trying to give him the ticket. They literally called in a bunch of back-up and tracked him down. One more reason to hate the UMPD.

I don't know if this would have made any news if it didn't appear that the cop punched her. Again, it appears that the force used was appropriate...but its usually not kosher for a guy, esp a cop, to take a swing at a woman.

The way I see it, you're a cop and being attacked by two women and you have no idea what's going on. You don't know if more people are going to jump in and start attacking you. You do what you can to get the situation under control.

You keep giving the benefit of the doubt to the people who are taking aggressive actions against authorities. You walk a mile in their shoes and see if you change your mind.

This. How can anyone POSSIBLY be arguing that those two girls were in the right?

He shoulda thrown some rocks at them.

Not taking sides on right or wrong here, but I honestly believe hauling off and punching a woman in the face is way, way more likely to inflame the situation than to get it under control. The cop could very well have found several guys willing to jump in to defend her. Just saying.
